Stoner doom metal's Sleep performing in New Orleans in May
![]() Following its landmark sophomore album, 1991's Sleep's Holy Mountain, the band's ambitious followup Dopesmoker ? intended as a single hour-long song ? never saw its "official", fully realized release until 2003 and its remastered reissue in 2012. The back-and-forth of editing and label and band dissatisfaction ultimately disbanded Sleep, though the album is considered a metal masterpiece, a tedious-but-rewarding monster of dark, otherworldly conjuring through its mammoth performance. Sleep ? made up of High on Fire's Matt Pike and OM's Al Cisneros, with Neurosis' Jason Roeder on drums ? reunited in 2009 and has performed infrequently at festivals and small tours.?
