More than a dozen New Orleans groups ? representing hospitality workers, civil rights, immigrants, club dancers and LGBT youth, among others ? marched through Mid-City to the steps of City Hall on May 1, a reminder to city officials of the demands from New Orleans workers less than a week before a new administration takes office. Led by the New Orleans Workers' Center for Racial Justice and its Congress of Day Laborers, the*International Workers Day march and rally called on city leaders to recognize and help rectify issues affecting a large swath of New Orleans workers, from fair wages and sick leave to the effects of over-policing and visibility of federal immigration authorities among vulnerable communities. As much as the groups sought to put workers' rights at the forefront of an outgoing ? and an incoming ? administration, the May Day march called on New Orleans workers to recognize its collective voice and experiences in the workplace as leverage toward a growing organizing power in pressuring City Hall to take notice. ? |
