Pelicans' Davis and Asik Team Up for Rare Statistical Feat

New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis and center Omer Asik accomplished a rare feat in Tuesday's 101-84 season-opening win over the Orlando Magic. According to NBA.com/Stats, they became the first teammates since David Robinson and Tim Duncan in 1998 to both record 15 or more rebounds and five or more blocks in the same game.

With the franchise entering the season amid its highest expectations since the Chris Paul era, Davis and Asik ensured a memorable beginning to the campaign, with Davis especially shining.

The former No. 1 overall draft pick turned in a true stat-sheet-stuffer, finishing with 26 points, 17 rebounds, two assists, nine blocks, three steals and no turnovers.

According to Basketball-Reference.com's play index, Davis recorded just the eighth performance of 26-plus points, 17-plus rebounds and nine-plus blocks in the regular season since 1985-86, which is the cut-off for full-game logs being available for all three statistics.

Hakeem Olajuwon is responsible for four of the eight performances, including an outing of 29 points, 18 rebounds, 11 blocks, nine assists, five steals and no turnovers during the 1989-90 season.

That performance is the only one since 1985-86 to match or beat what Davis did Tuesday in the six aforementioned statistical categories.

Asik, meanwhile, turned in a much more modest stat line, finishing with 14 points, 17 rebounds, two assists, five blocks, no steals and three turnovers. It may have fallen far short of what Davis did, but it was still an excellent way for the Turkish center to make his Pelicans debut.
