Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
I saw that the Washington Football Team name could become permanent. As a Saints fan, I am not sure I like this. What do you think?
For a placeholder its fine, but in the long run I am not sure if its in the interests of the other 31 teams to let a team playing in the nations capital brand itself as the Standard Oil, Bank of America, General Electric, etc of the NFL. Its a joke when they lose, but if they eventually win again, it helps brand them as a sort of 'Americas team.' We would be The Saints but they would be 'The Football Team.' Maybe its too picky to be concerned, but then again why should the other teams allow it if it even might hurt them but won't help them? Make Washington pick a real name like the other teams. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ermanent-name/ |
Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
I don't have a problem with it. They are the football team in Washington DC. So, the Washington Football Team is accurate.
I don't think they are trying to claim a spot as "Americas" team. That would make them as arrogant as Dallas. And that's a high bar to clear. |

Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
They are a football team from Washington, but at the same time the Falcons are a football team from Atlanta. Maybe the next global pandemic is avian flu all started by a Falcon in a wet market, so they want to change their name. Is Atlanta Football Team available to them, or is Washington getting exclusive rights to Football Team?
Also what will video games that don't have a license do? Is Tecmo Super Bowl for NES now violating Madden's exclusive license by using the name Washington Football Team? All the teams share revenue from the license agreement but now Washington wants to use the free name from Tecmo. |

There's a football team in Washington? Who Knew?

Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
I agree with JP on this. If they keep it, then millions of viewers every year from now on will ask “Why doesn’t that team have a name”? And people watching with them will have to explain and, inevitably, Redskins will be mentioned. It’s their best way to keep it alive and hopefully bring it back one day when this madness ends.

Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
Dallas has had 4 winning seasons of the last 11, I must be musing something in how being thought of as America's Team brings any benefit to a single team or detriment to the other 31.
I am a Saints fan, what any other team calls them selves has zero effect on the flavor of my coffee in the morning. That said, if there is any branding that would cause the moniker of Capital Criminals or Mire Maggots to be bestowed upon them, I am all in. |

Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
Me thinks you are way overthinking it. Even if they are labeled “America’s Team” it doesn’t give them any advantage over other teams.
Let’s face it, even though Hank Hill describes propane as “Gods Gas, I tell you what” natural gas is still more heavily used. |

The Guy Squatting on Replacement Names for Washington’s NFL Team Will Let Them Have the Names...re: Washingtonian Magazine
The Alexandria man who appears to own the trademarks for several names that might be used by Washington’s now-nameless NFL team says he is willing to give the names away for free. The man, Martin McCaulay, appeared to have applied for trademarks for several possible NFL team names, including the much-discussed Washington Red Wolves. But on Tuesday, McCaulay took to Twitter to announce he would be giving away the names for free. Hi everyone I need to clear something up. I want them to change the name and am embarrassed if I did anything that slows that down. I thought if I hoarded all the good names that would keep someone else who might be a pain in the neck from getting them. — Martin McCaulay (@MartinMcCaulay) July 14, 2020 On Twitter, McCaulay went on to describe his motives for buying the team names. He insisted he had not applied for the trademarks as a money-making scheme, and that he may have to hire a trademark attorney simply to give the names to the team for free. McCaulay also said he wasn’t giving the rights to Washington football owner Dan Snyder, but to the National Football League. The announcement comes as the Washington Post reports that many of the names that Snyder’s team was seeking already had trademark applications attached to them, leading some to wonder if the legal process might delay the announcement of a new name for the Washington football team. |

Re: Washington Football Team Name - Unfair To Other Teams?
In regards to people buying up the potential names, that practice needs to stop. The law should require a business with that trademark to be started within 6 months or the trademark is forfeited and the person fined. I also believe something needs to be done to stop the stupid crap like Johnny Football and others like it.

Not meaning to sound rude but that is fairly absurd and unenforceable... You may not realize it but most companies do not conduct business under legal entity name, they DBA. Also it is worth noting that more words are protected for products than company names. First to file gets it. |

I wonder what it cost the NFL for that free name?

I'm really getting tired of changing teams names and even rewriting history just so someone doesn't get their feelings hurt. The native Indians were not offended by the Redskins, Braves or Cleveland Indians. Someone else got offended for them!
