Saints players complain about 17 game schedule

Well, this will likely cost them a draft pick from Gotohell

I don’t think so 76. I may be wrong though.

I'm not sure why they're complaining. The measure was voted on and approved BY THE PLAYERS UNION last year.

The league was down in 2020 but every player got paid in full.

Flip side of the coin: I'd like to see the players get another bye week + allow for medical marijuana and/or CBD treatment.

Re: Saints players complain about 17 game schedule

I dont care to hear crap from the players on this. The NFLPA voted (estimated 2500 players, 79% of the league) and approved this.

Players want more pay, an extra game check is more pay. The teams want more cap space, an added game brings in more revenue and softens cap space issues due to reduced stadium revenue.

If the frikken morons didn't learn from the 2011 CBA that voting for more compensation and ignoring the fact that they made Goodell judge and jury, it is on them. Not the first time DeMaurice Smith has represented the players poorly yet the players keep voting him in as director of the Players Association.

Don't hate on the league, the players wants and piss poor voting are what drives this sh1t.

I didn't care for the idea of having an extra game either, but really the Thursday night games are actually the much bigger factor affecting player safety and quality of play.

There are different factions of players. Overall 17 games benefits the rank and file players because it raises their salary floor. For superstars, like Kamara, who have their bag, it's a detriment.

You won't see the backup linebacker who plays special teams complaining about the extra games. And there's a lot more of them in the league than superstar QBs, RBs, CBs, and WRs.

And now they want to do Fridays?

It's too much during the week. This isn't the NBA. But it's all about the Benjamins.

Only one Friday, Smash. Black Friday.

I for one want as much NFL as I can get. Make it 18 games, instead of 17. Play a game every day of the week, if possible. The logistics are of no concern to me. Just give me the product and let them worry about how they do it. The players are well compensated and will be even better compensated with more broadcast windows every year. Their potential salaries are tied directly to the expanding revenue streams.

I think a second bye week is probable when they future cut preseason games to two. The extra bye week will give the league an extra week of games. 17 games with two bye weeks mean 19 weeks of regular season football revenues and they are only playing the players for 17 of those weeks.

Yeah, but that one Friday will quickly expand once they get the foot in the door. I understand the desire to have it on multiple/every night, but that would wear down the appeal a bit IMO. Part of the savor of it is the anticipation of NFL Sunday for me. If it blends into just another “Who’s playing tonight” affair, then the product would diminish. Just my opinion.

I'm a glutton. I can't get too much of a good thing. Oh, there's also going to be four Monday night double headers this year instead of just one.

The NFL needs more money ya'll. So what if the players have to play two games a week? They get paid.

The thing is most players don't get paid extra for an extra game. I'm not sure but as I understand it each player will get their contract moneys but it will be paid out over 17 rather than 16 weeks. Am I right or is there more money with a 17th game? This looks like a win for future contracts and players not existing ones.

Literally everyone has complained about the results of some election where their peers outvoted them and someone or some measure won that they did not support.

That “Literally” is not true. You are claiming that everyone complained when the candidate they voted for lost an election. I have voted
For the losing candidate in many elections that I accepted gracefully.

I heard when they first started talking about the possibility of expanding to 17 games that an extra game day check would be issued. So basically, their total base salary would increase by 1/17th.

Not sure if that's what they are actually going to do, however.

Actually it won't. The NFL is prohibited from playing Friday games while during the high school football season. That's why the rare Friday NFL game is in late December, like the Saints game on Christmas in 2020.

No sir, that is very short sighted for any player that is enjoying the fruits of collective bargaining but then ******* when he has to play a single additional game is a moron in my book.

When you join a union there is no different faction, it is called a union for a reason. The CBA is one deal that marries higher wages and potentially more games. Players don't get to cash a bigger check then cry about 60 more minutes of work and if you buy that crap I have a snow skiing resort for sale in Hawaii.

That's shortsighted. You can have a disagreement about an issue when there's only one person involved. You really believe that a union with over 2000 people are going to be 100% in agreement over this issue?

There are people who did not want the 17th game. The issue was voted upon. They lost that vote. You really believe because the majority voted for an issue that the dissenters lost their right to complain about it?

Re: Saints players complain about 17 game schedule

The more money the league makes the more money the players get its that simple. The cap increases and so will the salaries so they should chill.

However, I am not for 17 games. I rather go 18 and have an extra bye week.

The bench mark of .500 is a standard that has been set. Below .500 gets people fired. 17 games takes that away. Also records be damned. You might as well throw all the records out. They will mean nothing going forward.

I just don't buy into this change the league for the sake of change.

What is great about the NFL is that the demand for it is high so it makes the games more important each and every week. So not the supply will eventually over take the demand and then what...

We all know that this is change for the sake of money. The league and its owners see this as a cash grab what they will have to share with the rank and file.

You are missing the point completely and so are they. A vote not going someone's way is no justification for b1tching and moaning after, that's some new aged millennial liberal crap where tantrums get thrown for years after a vote. Contrary to popular belief, it is very much okay to not agree with something privately and not take it to twitter and a microphone.

Adults take good and bad and move on, otherwise they can resign and do what ever other skill set they possess.

This is being framed inaccurately as the league did not add a game. The league moved a preseason game to the regular season. 2020 was 4 preseason and 16 regular, 2021 is 3 preseason and 17 regular. Total preseason+regular season games in 2021 will be the same as 2020. Ergo they aren't playing more for less money, one could very much argue that the only change is that 1 game that didn't count against their regular season record, now does.

The point is that they want their cake but do not want to clean their plate. They stand sportively behind the union when it adds $ to their paycheck but move one game from preseason to regular season and the fans have to read about complaining.

This is a whole lot of drama over what accounts to 0-more games per season being played. They took the 4th preseason game where starters play and made it count on the record...

This is what the league knows, their game costs are pretty much fixed by stadium. Changing the classification of a game from "pre" to "regular" season increases interest and revenue exponentially.:bng:

But that specific change against the record is huge. The record affects playoff seeding. A regular season game is played full bore, not at minimal intensity of a preseason game. Veterans play minimal, or not at all in preseason games.

I'm not really debating the 17th game with you. I'm debating the premise of "Shut up. Play football. Be glad you have a job. If you don't like it, then quit." with no other options attitude when some have dissent to a proposal. Just because that's what you would do in that situation doesn't mean that others don't have a right to go in a different direction.

But the working conditions have been changed to assist player health as part of the CBA just like other jobs. Like PPE in labs or construction sites, the NFL regulates that along with concussion protocols and changes to rules that penalize hits on defenseless players and protect the QBs.
