C.J. Gardner-Johnson leads Saints in performance-based pay for 2nd straight year
 

Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was an integral part of the New Orleans Saints’ 2020 defense, and he earned a handsome raise for his efforts, leading all Saints players in performance-based pay bumps.

NFL teams were operating with an $8.5 million pool this year, and Gardner-Johnson led the way with $549,038 after playing 1,008 defensive and special teams snaps in 2020. This is Gardner-Johnson's second consecutive year leading the Saints in this category, earning an extra $278,725 after his 2019 rookie campaign.

Center Erik McCoy, who led all Saints players with 1,074 snaps from scrimmage, was next in line with $451,465 in performance-based bonus money. McCoy also ranked second in performance-based pay a year ago.

Fourteen Saints (and now-former Saints) earned more than $200,000 in performance-based payouts after the 2020 season. Among them were rookies Adam Trautman ($295,855), Marquez Callaway ($225,322) and Cesar Ruiz ($205,065).

Getting drafted in the 4th round was a insult for Ceedy. He took it personal & worked hard on his craft.

There should be a incentive in his contract on how he can get WR's kicked out of games. Ultimate trash talker with serious game.

He is too valuable in the slot and up around the line of scrimmage to move him outside. I think he's more valuable to the team where he lines up now. Get the right guy for the boundary CB and let CJGJ do what comes naturally as an enforcer.

We seem to do pretty well with third and fourth round picks where players have fallen for whatever reason. However, I'm tired of taking chances on often injured players that dropped down draft boards for the draft. They never seem to workout or can only play sometimes.

For a change we didn't have to pay out too many performance-based play checks this year. We are down near the bottom of the league but if I remember correctly we are usually in the upper tier making payments. Are these just well written contracts or under performance by the player?
