Longtime Saints TE Josh Hill opts to retire weeks after signing with Lions

1 Attachment(s)
Former New Orleans Saints tight end Josh Hill is retiring from the NFL, according to a report from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Hill, 30, was preparing for his first season in the league outside of New Orleans, as he signed with the Detroit Lions and his former position coach Dan Campbell back in March. The Saints had released him a few days prior due to salary cap constraints.

Before signing with Detroit, Hill had been with the Saints since they signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Idaho State in 2013. He had appeared in 117 games, starting in 61 of those, and amassed 1,071 yards receiving with 15 touchdowns.

Hill "has been a model of consistency throughout his eight seasons with us," Payton said in a March news release. "He has been reliable, selfless and filled numerous roles for us, oftentimes on the fly and in the middle of games, filling each role at a very high level. We appreciate everything he has done for our team and know he will have continued success as he moves forward."

Good for him. Lived the dream and now gets to enjoy the fruits of his labor at the age of 30.

Being a Detroit Lion have sent lessor men into retirement.

Josh probably took a nice long look at that Detroit roster and said … "oh hell no, I'm out" :p.

Enjoy your retirement.

Shame we couldn't get him back on the cheap, most AK highlight reels are also JHill highlights.

I once went on an EMS call for an inured 16 year old kid outside his home.
He had broken both bones in his lower right leg and was found lying just beneath a window.

I asked him if he had jumped out of the window trying to escape because he heard sirens earlier that day and he yelled "Wouldn't you!?"

Of course, you had to be there.

Long story short, wouldn't you?

HIll was so repsonsible for springing many long plays

He would lock up a key blocker in the secondary
Then shed him as the play went by and block 1 or 2 other people out of the play

One of my favorite players. He wasn't flashy or anything. Just a lunch pale guy who went to work every day and worked his ass off. You never saw him complaining or pouting. Guy just came to work and played hard.

Wish we could've had him back for a season or 2.

Good blocker and had a nice career as an UDFA, but he didn't have the best of hands when it came to catching the ball.

I'm really excited to see how Trautman develops.

Dude was not a pass catcher. Just a blocking beast.

Still, that's not an excuse for dropping the ball if the pass comes your way.

Especially if it's a play drawn for you in the red zone.

To be honest, Hill only had three dropped passes since 2018. Two in 2018 on 24 targets, one in 2019 35 targets, and none in 2020.

I presume if we happen to have a need during the season, we wouldn't be able to sign him out of retirement, right? He's still Lions property?

Hills replacement is now in the building with the new
TE that we signed. Kasasomething. I Believe he is a blocking TE who catches well. If he makes it through TC then I'll work on remembering his name.

I myself, doubt Jhill ever had a play drawn for him as #1 option, and I honestly don't remember him missing catching a pass in a meaningful situation which is more than I can say for our recent #1 TE's Watson and that other jerk. I know we can't have him back this year, but if he stays in shape I'd love to have him back next year.
