Our rookies on defense will help as well as our returning role players, like Tuttle.

# CB 2 position … losing Janoris still stings for me.

Hopefully Mr. Mansfield (Adebo) takes his lumps early & becomes solid on those boundaries.

Kris Richard can coach him up like he did Awuzie while in Dallas.

Brown will be missed, IMO our run defense needs to keep rolling. Forcing them to throw on us so our DEs can pin there ears back.

Not as much as you'd think St.T - check the snap count out last season...

Malcolm Brown is a solid player, and I get why they wanted to shore up NT....

But when you look at bang-for-the-buck, was surprised he wasn't released sooner...

And do believe Tuttle is gonna be the guy who leaps forward on that interior DL...

I think that there are some interesting pieces in the interior D-line rotation: Glasgow, Neal Jr, Roach and Bronson.

Roach flashed a couple of times last season as an UDFA within a difficult season for all rookies - I hope he continues to trend up and provide Onyemata with a competent sub.

Bronson seems like a beast, but we'll have to wait and see with him.

Glasgow did well when called upon last season, so he might provide some quality depth for Tuttle, and Neal Jr could become a difference maker if his health problems are behind him.

None of them are guaranteed to be good players, but there are some possibilities there among the UDFAs, and hopefully Nielsen can coach them up.

Both Tuttle and Roach were on the roster last year. When Brown was out (3 games), the run defense suffered pretty significantly. iirc, Saints were rolling on a 3 years and then some string of not allowing a single 100 yard rusher until the Philly game below. I’ll summarize the weeks with Brown being out:

@Philadelphia, week 14 loss, 29-32. Saints surrendered 106 yards on 18 carries to rookie QB Jalen Hurts, an additional 115 yards on 14 carries to their RB, grand total running yards surrendered was 246 yards on 36 carries, 6.83 average yards per carry.

@KC, week 15 loss, 20-30. Saints surrendered 179 total yards rushing.

Minn, week 16 win, 52-33. Saints did an ok job of corralling D.Cook and A.Abdullah, imho, 90 yards on 17 carries, but the lopsided score and Alvin Kamara rushing for 6 TD’s forced Minn to be pass happy, 41 pass attempts. Cook still rushed for 5 yards per carry every time he touched the ball.

Could Tuttle and/or Roach improve this season? Sure. But they were on the roster last year, and we have seen the results when Brown was out of the lineup.

3 positions still worry me.

1) I hope we find a way to get Kwon back, outside of DD, the LB position is a mess without him.

2) Janoris’ replacement could be Adebo, I sure hope it is, but placing trust in a rook with zero experience at this level is a bit worrisome, lol. Fingers crossed he steps in and plays at a high level immediately. I would feel much better signing a more veteran CB.

3) Simply put..., Brown’s replacement is not on the roster.

This post isn’t meant to say anything negative about Tuttle or Roach..., but they aren’t Brown’s replacement, they bring a different dynamic to the interior of a DL, but it’s definitely not as a 1 technique DT/NT.

It’s my belief M.Brown was THE largest reason why the Saints had that string of not allowing a 100 yard rusher.

Totally agree about Brown. Very overlooked and underrated. As you and others have stated there was a significant drop off when he was out.

The success of our defensive line was the key to our secondaries success and one reason our line was so good is because of the depth rotation. We don’t have that anymore. The rotation was the single biggest reason for our success.
Lots of question marks.
How long will Lattimore be out?
Will Adebo be able to step into #2/can we find a decent vet?
Can we get Kwon back healthy? Will Baun step up? Rookies?
Can Davenport stay healthy AND FINALLY give us the type of production worth the draft capital spent on him?
Can we stay relatively healthy? We are going to have to.
If the answer is yes to all of these then yes, we will be a force. It’s a lot to bank on though.

The article pointed out our pass rush and run defense as big reasons as to why we’ll be dominant. We don’t know if we have either next year. Kind of a dumb article. Points out dominance in the run game and pass rush and then turns around and rattles off the laundry list of players we lost that were key to the success of those aspects of the game.
I don’t think we will be Spags bad on defense but I don’t see us being middle of the pack either.
Could always get lucky though.
I’m really excited to see how players like CGJ, Granderson, Tuttle, and others continue to develop though. It’s going to be an exciting year albeit for very different reasons.
