Twelve weeks into the season, we have a much more drab (and convoluted) QB rivalry to talk about: Trevor Siemian vs. Taysom Hill vs. Ian Book.

If you could even call it a rivalry.

Siemian handled all quarterback snaps in the Saints’ home field walloping at the hands of Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. Suffice to say, he did not play well, throwing for one score and 163 passing yards while recording an interception.

After the game, Sean Payton addressed questions about who the backup quarterback was since Hill was still injured.

Sean Payton was a practice squad third string type QB. He loves them all. He has a long history of taking middle to late round QBs to develop. None ever amounted to anything. Book seems like a longshot.

It's what I've been saying, for every successful mid to late QB pick (ie. Dak Prescott) there are 100 that might have a chance at getting a backup gig at the very most. Most don't even make it off the practice squad or even make a team at all.

How strongly can he feel when he continues to start Trevor? Trevor takes anywhere between a five and 47 step drop which destroys our office of line. He is not Michael Vick and does not have the ability to scramble and has the speed of a sloth.

He never said what it was about Book that they feel "strongly" about. It could be that they feel "strongly" that he is no where near ready to take an NFL snap that counts.

Book is a developmental QB. Throwing him in the fire too early could be disastrous for both him and the team.

I will continue to refute the narrative that Book is a developmental QB, at least in the broader sense. When I think of a 'developmental' QB, I think of a QB that was in an option offense like Tim Tebow or Scott Frost or did not have experience in pro-like offense and needs to be fully educated to grasp the pro game.


If you want to use a broad definition of developmental QB, then fine. Just understand that if you consider Book a developmental QB, then so are Pat Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott and pretty much any other young NFL QB you could manage to name.


A big part of my approval of Book comes from the fact he very rarely ever looked :bugeyes: ... even against competition like Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Michigan.


He didn't have great receivers at Notre Dame at all - he is more accustomed to working with limitations and making off-schedule plays and not turning the ball over. I see his transition to the NFL being easier than Trevor Lawrence - who always had a top notch college offense around him.


If you want to say Book's talent is marginal, he doesn't quite have the size or the arm strength to survive in the pro's - those arguments are more valid and you can certainly make them. But please stop with this narrative that Book is "developmental" - a guy who had far more college starts than Burrow or Mac Jones. That label is nonsense.

Disastrous for Book maybe. He can rub some dirt on anything that hurts, including his feelings. Not disastrous for the team tho. We suck already.

At some point you have the take the training wheels off and see what ya got. It could be considered a desperate measure for sure, and these are most definitely desperate times.

If Hill can start then fine. Same mentality with him. Remove any doubt about what he can or can't do. Right now. Elevate Book to #2 and tell that kid to get his :censored: ready cause Hill is gonna get pinged here and there at least.

Find something else for Trevor to do - I didn't like the vibe of the team with that dude. I'm sure he's a nice guy. Good enough as a backup. That's clearly his ceiling. Might make a good coach someday, who knows...

I maintain I am not advocating to tank. Play like hell to win, but take some risks with some players. Now is the time.

Oh and tell Trautman to fish or cut bait already.
