Jameis Winston says he'd 'be able to go' right now if asked

While the NFL schedule release took center stage Thursday night, New Orleans Saints fans were treated to another sight. Starting quarterback Jameis Winston joined Rich Eisen, Steve Mariucci and Michael Irvin of NFL Network to discuss the Saints’ 2022 schedule. But before getting into the calendar, Mariucci had a bigger question for Winston.

“Well before we talk more schedule,” the former San Francisco 49ers coach prefaced, “I want to talk about you, Jameis. How are you feeling? Are you close to being 100% so you can win more games this year?”

Without hesitation, Winston gave the most positive response we’ve heard thus far about his recovery from last season’s Week 7 ACL tear: “Coach if you need me to strap it up right now, I’d be able to go.”

The former first-round pick suffered his season-ending injury against his former team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Halloween night last year. It was a devastating blow after a 14-to-3 touchdown to interception ratio got him started after winning the quarterback battle with Taysom Hill.

Winston will see the Buccaneers again early in 2022 with a Week 2 home opener in New Orleans. It’s appropriate that Winston would open home field play against the team he last met a year ago. But for Winston and the Saints, the first week’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons is top priority.

When asked if he’d be the starting quarterback against the Falcons Week 1, Winston minced no words. “Yes sir,” he told Eisen. “I know I’m (going to) be out there ready and prepared to go. Absolutely.”

New Orleans brought Winston back this offseason on a two-year $28 million deal. They also added veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton to back him up. But if Winston’s assessment of his recovery is correct, there will be no need for an early-season look at Dalton. From what Winston had to say, he should be on the field Week 1 in Atlanta.

Olave posted that Thomas and himself were working out together recently.

Jameis has got an arm. That's for sure.

He's got a big arm but the problem is that he has no touch to the ball. He needs to work on that. I see that as one of the flaws he needs to work on. That, and of course, his decision making still needs work.

Two years working under Payton and Brees had to have had a huge affect on his decision making. He done nothing but work on improving since leaving the Bucs. It's hard to compare where he is now to where he was under coach "No risk it, no biscuit" Arians. ;)

Not buying the "no-touch" on the football.

Jameis has shown the ability to throw WR's in stride on the deep pass. I like to call them rainbows. Probably better than most at this level.

Now his intermediate (short pass) accuracy could use a little work no doubt.

A lot of QBs come back from that injury and when the bullets start flying they get happy feet. Winston will impress me IF he can keep his cool.

From a horse collar tackle outside of the pocket? I can't remember another QB getting injured in that manner. Or are you talking a knee injury in general?

I think people are also forgetting the almost horrible offensive line play Jameis, Trevor, Taysom and Ian had to work with last season. They all we’re running for their lives a good portion of the season.

Really rooting for this guy this year. I hope he has a huge year and proves all his doubters wrong!

There s no doubt that he has a strong arm. When I refer to no touch I was talking about his over throws to the check down receiver. I think his long distance accuracy is great. His medium and short game needs less of a strong arm and more "touch" to make it a catchable ball. Great points everyone!

I agree I’d like to see him be…smoother on his check down and short throws. I think part of his issue was the idea of NOT throwing an INT was so firmly in his head that he hesitated (maybe avoided) throws he could have made downfield for fear of the turnover and did a “regret” check down throw he didn’t like. Hopefully with the potential receiving targets we have he will make those throws and be more comfortable when he has to take what the D gives him.

I think he throws too hard from time to time and it messes with his accuracy. It seems to be an issue for African American QB’s. Winston, Newton, Vick, etc. He’ll be fine though. I think his best years are ahead of him.
