Re: Olave Named Offensive Rookie of the Month
No. Tape doesn't lie. He's got some really good tape early on in his rookie season. We may have had a good reason for trading all those draft picks away after all. Go figure.

Re: Olave Named Offensive Rookie of the Month
Olave is a good player. We did not need to trade our 2023 1st round pick to acquire him. We had the 18th overall pick in 2022. We traded up with Philadephia to get the 16th and 19th overall picks in 2022, giving up the 18th pick, our 2023 1st rounder, and various other picks. Then during the draft we traded up with Washington from 16th to 11th to select Olave. Had we never made the trade with Philadelphia, we still could have traded up from 18th to 11th with Washington most likely. Or we could have traded up from 18th to 16th with Philadelphia, without also asking for their other 1st rounder at 19th, and not needed to give up a future first rounder. What trading the future first rounder got us was a second pick in the first round, which turned into Trevor Panning, a guy who looked raw in preseason, got in a fight with a teammate which is not good because it more often leads to future discipline issues than spirited play, and then got a long term and possibly lingering injury that is not good news for a big man, especially with our history with davenport and turner. Then in the 2nd round we passed on George Pickens to take Alontae Taylor who will be valuable on special teams if healthy. So I am glad that Olave is good but it does not justify trading away future first round picks that serve as insurance when catastrophe happens at the qb position. Wide receivers dont win championships. Many of the best in recent decades never got a ring. Olave is good but we should never trade another future first rounder unless it is to move up for a franchise qb or we already have a franchise qb and can be fairly sure where that future first rounder will be in the draft.

Olave IS a good player. He has the potential to be great. Our QB situation is what it is. Not much more we could do in the offseason. We tried to get Watson. Very happy that didn't happen. |

The trade with Philadelphia was neccessary to avoid having to choose between Olave and Panning. It was not neccessary to get Panning. That would have taken some trading up but not our 2023 1st. Having a good or great wide receiver is nice, but wide receiver is not the most important position. If we we end up giving up a top 5 pick in 2023 to avoid choosing between Olave and Panning in 2022 that will be bad for us. T Falcons tried building around a WR by selling the farm to trade up for Julio Jones. Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson never got a ring. Larry Fitzgerald never did either. Or Randy Moss. The Cowboys, Bengals, and Vikings have been all about their wide receivers and haven't got a ring from one since the early 90's. So we could have got Olave without trading next years 1st, but if you feel that would have been too big a risk and trading next years first was neccessary to assure getting Olave, you are valuing the wide receiver position too much, and we should never risk winning the QB lottery with a future pick that could be top 5 to get a mid round wide receiver, even if the are the next Randy Moss or Jerry Rice. |
