So.....how about that kicker?

and ONLY the kicker

TheGambler 10-03-2005 04:50 PM

I still think he's good.

saintswhodi 10-03-2005 04:52 PM

I will admit, I was hoping we got Edinger in the off-season, or drafted Nugent. But he's fine. It's not like he is losing games with the field goals he misses. He's 9/11. Sue the guy. But we definitely should get someone else next year. :D

BoudinSandwich 10-03-2005 05:42 PM

Carney scored more times than anyone on the team. I don't think he's a major concern. "He should have made that field goal." No, our offense should have scored a touchdown.

BoudinSandwich 10-03-2005 06:32 PM

On one drive, the Saints' offense had first and goal from the Bills' 2 yard line and could not put the ball in the endzone. In my opinion, no touchdown there is harder to forgive than Carney missing a field goal. The Saints had 6 trips to/around the redzone and scored 1 touchdown. Thats horrible.

So the Saints offense is the only one in the NFL to do that?? You have never ever before seen the Saints have problems getting the ball in the endzone in their existence?

I was just listening to 1310 here in Arlington, and they were saying how the Cowboys have yet to score in the first quarter of any game? WTF! I thought our offense is the only one with these kinds of problems.

Peyton Manning has only thrown 3 TD'S this season, I wonder how they have been scoring offensively. I watched a Pat's team go to the Superbowl without scoring a offensive TD throughout the playoffs.

Nothing you have said changes the fact that our offense is playing badly. No, they're not the only team in the NFL who's offense stinks. No, this is not the first Saints team to have a disfunctional offense.

All I'm saying was Carney had 5 chances to score and he scored 4 times. Our offense had 6 times to score and they scored 1 time.

Also, don't kid yourself. If we hadn't received the ball in such good field position for most of our drives, we would not have even had that many chances for Carney to kick. Credit goes to the defense for giving us good field position.

BoudinSandwich 10-03-2005 07:35 PM

I admit, Carney missed an easy one, but the offense should have had atleast 3 touchdowns. I agree with the phiolosophy that says the offense should not rely on the kicker to score points. To me, if you had 1st and goal on the 2 yard line and failed to get it in the endzone for first, second, and third down, you don't diserve the 3 point field goal. I would go for it on 4th. If you can't move 2 yards on 4 tries, then you don't diserve any points.

Indeed, lets agree to disagree. I guess we'll just have to wait and see which element is worst.

Savant 10-04-2005 03:02 AM

Maybe we should put horse blinders on him. The field goals he's missed might be a result of eye candy.

TheGambler 10-04-2005 08:34 AM

So far he's missed 2 FGs all season.......Yes, both were chip shots. But let's let the season play out a bit more before we start thinking about cutting him, or who we're gonna bring in next year.

9 for 11 ain't bad at all. I'll still take my chances on him.

Saint_LB 10-04-2005 10:11 AM

Missing two chip-shots in four games is unusual but not unheard of. The fact that he made the nine other ones is a positive. I am willing to see how the season unfolds before I am ready to ship Carney out. He would have to miss a few more easy ones before I became overly concerned. Don't forget there is a long-snapper and a holder involved in every kick. Who's to say that something didn't go wrong with that during one or both of the misses. I am not making excuses, I am just looking at the overall picture and so far he has done OK in my eyes.

Euphoria 10-04-2005 10:27 AM

He has not done ok... You have to make the kicks that count. When the pressue is on you have to deliever as a kicker. You don't miss a PAT to send you into overtime and a chance to get into the playoffs. You don't miss kicks that are automatic to put you ahead... 9-11 is crap if you can't deliever when it counts as well. He is a head case now and isn't getting any younger... we have to dump him at the end of the year...

BrooksMustGo 10-04-2005 10:53 AM

I wish our offense could finish the job in the red zone, rendering this a moot point.

However, I think he's pretty good, but like all positions--if we can get a better player, we ought to.

spkb25 10-04-2005 12:46 PM

our o is having big problems right now. stallworth on the other hand looked great. ypu can't win againt most teams with 1 td and 4 fg's. yes when you play a pathetic o you can. how many of them on our schedule. i think arron needs to keep running like he did this past game. really helped us out a couple of times. deuce has to start banging ahead for 4 plus yard gains though also. i did notice this week him getting hit at the line of scrimmage or even before. our o looks like a mistake half the time. it isn't fluent. the best drive all year was our very first one against carolina. we need to get that back. if not i don't see us winning a lot of games. i am holding out my thoughts on our d until we play a better o. i like the pressure we put on and i hope we keep that up with favre this week. if we can he should ahve no problem tossing one or two our way.
as far as carney 80% is pretty good.

WhoDat 10-04-2005 01:42 PM

I agree with the general concensus that it would be nice if we could get in the damn endzone. That said, missing kicks inside of 40 yards in a dome is a bad sign. Mark my words, eventually a missed 27 yarder in the 2nd quarter will come back to bite us.

Is my memory that bad, or didn't he kick a game-winner already against Carolina? I am happy that he made that one and missed one against Buffalo that turned out to be insignificant. The one against Carolina was much more of a pressure kick then either of the two he missed. They were crucial misses, to be sure, but not as critical as the one against Carolina, IMO.

With that being said, I agree that Carney is getting old, and at some point in time soon he will need to be replaced, but personally I don't think that the misses he has had this year have hurt us as bad as play at other positions has hurt us.

As far as the missed PAT that would have sent us into OT and possibly to the playoffs, well, the fact is that this is simply not true. By the time Carney was lining up to kick that PAT, we were already eliminated from the playoffs. I don't remember the exact scenario, and I suppose that I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I remember that on that day we needed to win, and one or two other teams needed to lose, and one of those teams had just won right before he attempted that PAT. I remember thinking when it happened that it didn't matter anyway.

Here's the thing with old guys like Carney....

It's expected that he lose some range as he gets older....so you expect the 45+ kicks to be a little less on.

What you expect with the older guy is that anything inside of 40 is money in the bank. He has missed some really woeful kicks. The game winner was fantastic, but you just don't miss 21 yarders...or 32 yarders for that matter. I don't know what it is with Carney, but the last thing this team needs is an erratic kicker. The Saints, for all of their stinkiness, have always been able to drill field goals.

And you can't just say in hindsight that the kick he missed last week was meaningless....at the time, it would have made it a 2 score game. That miss opened the door for the other team..they just weren't good enough to do anything about it.

subguy 10-04-2005 07:37 PM

Yeah he sucks.....after his 17 years he is only 10th on the all-time leading scorers list

BoudinSandwich 10-04-2005 07:51 PM

Just a thought: The Saints received Carney from the Chargers. Maybe he is better kicking outdoors than indoors.
