2023 New Orleans Saints Offseason Preview

Eying the crown in a weak NFC South division, the Saints once again made a handful of win-now moves last offseason, including buying a second selection in the first round of the draft from Philly. With the ripcord of Sean Payton's offensive ingenuity no longer available, losses at receiver and quarterback ultimately proved too great for the defense to overcome. Michael Thomas suffered a toe injury in Week 3 and never returned. Jameis Winston went down with a back issue a few weeks later. He was able to rejoin the Saints as a backup later in the season, but first-year head coach Dennis Allen indicated he never fully recovered. Led by Andy Dalton the rest of the way, a zombified Saints offense averaged fewer than 20 points a game en route to being eliminated from the playoffs a handful of weeks before the season ended.

What sticks out in the article is our lack of offensive ppg. It's like once we reached the red zone, they simply refused to capitalize.

Play calling (or lack there of) was bad by Pete.

AK, Olave, Shaheed & Taysom Hill are WEAPONS. Find a way to use these guys on critical 3rd down plays.

I forget which game it was (maybe Tampa) but on 3rd & long, why the hell is Pete calling up plays & throwing to Kirkwood/Merritt?

Make it make sense.

Under Dennis Allen the Saints don't Gamble. Rarely do we go for it on 4th and are at the bottom of the league on attempts. Pete Carmichael is apparently afraid to let a back up quarterback try to make a play and would rather settle for long field goals. I miss Sean Payton's aggressive attitude that helped mold the Saints aggressive team.

They were even hit for bounties, which we all know is just a cover up for the concussions that were being investigated, because of their aggressive style of play. We used to play to win and now we play not to lose. SMH

Interestingly enough, the year that the Saints "allegedly" had a bounty system they were in the bottom half of the league in personal fouls committed by the defense and didn't cause injury that required removal from the game to a single offensive player. They had to have been the worst "bounty hunters" in history.

:D

I know. Right? I do miss that aggressive mentality though.

Aggressive for damned sure. Just not what Goodell was led to believe by that subhuman slimeball, Mike Cerullo, that falsified "evidence" and passed along a string of lies. But then again, Goodell was searching for anything to believe to try to cover his sorry ass.
