Quote:

Howden was a football and track star as a senior at Desert Pines High School in California before heading to Minnesota. He started five of 13 appearances as a true freshman (45 tackles, one interception, three pass breakups). Howden started 12 times in 2019 (57 tackles, one interception, six pass breakups), all seven games in 2020 (37 tackles, one pass breakup) and 12 times in 2021 (43 tackles, 1.5 for loss, five pass breakups). He finished his career with an excellent fifth year, intercepting two passes and breaking up five others while making a career-high 58 tackles (3.5 for loss) in 13 starts. -- by Chad Reuter
Strengths
  • Team captain with 49 career starts.
  • Keys blocking scheme and immediately attacks run play.
  • Adequate patience when scraping with run play development.
  • Smooth hip flip to match route breaks with timing.
  • Intelligent and instinctive on the back end as deep safety.
  • Digests route combinations and flows with quarterback's eyes.

Weaknesses
  • Backpedal is a little tight and upright.
  • Lacks length and speed to stay with vertical targets downfield.
  • Allows blocking receivers to get into his frame.
  • Has a tendency to overrun his pursuit leverage at times.
  • Feet show stall in lateral change of direction.
  • Unable to recover from a bad pursuit angle.

I'm thinking that he's a special teamer who fills a niche in the secondary and grows into our nickel back.

Lattimore, Taylor and Adebo? Tough call. Adebo played pretty well his rookie year.

"Only been penalized twice on 3,027 career defensive snap"

That tells me he plays with discipline.

I'm not a fan of Dennis as HC, but he skins on the wall when it comes to producing talent in the secondary.

Good luck @ camp Jordan :bng: .

So is he better than the safety from Bama drafted in the second round ?

I hope so. Roman Harper was average-to-good as a Safety for the Saints.
Brian Branch might be a good 2nd round Alabama Safety too. We'll see.

PJ Fleck is one of the most demanding and energetic coaches in college football. If Jordan was a team captain with the Gophers, there's no questioning his drive and work ethic.

Aren't those three boundary corners who have little to no slot coverage experience? I recently read an article describing the slot attributes and I'm not sure which one has the tightest hips and skills necessary to excel in the slot. It's a different animal. Roby did well enough playing in the slot, but Jordan Howard looks like he completely fills the Saints slot corner vision of replacing Gardner Johnson.

He is a little undersized, but he's a solid tackler who doesn't commit many penalties and has extensive experience playing in the slot. Don't be surprised to see his snaps increase as he gets comfortable in the system.

Smoke came in with a lot of swagger last year and his name is cool. I'm rooting for him.:bng:

edit: That statement is silly. I'm rooting for all these guys. I guess that I'm just rooting for Smoke-more.?

Lol, understandable.

Just looking at some of Smoke's college tape, he'd fit in well in the '90s style of football against a run-heavy league. IMO today's NFL is too petty and quick to blow whistles on a violent, hard-hitting free safety. Smoke plays like a throwback Sammy Knight.

Unfortunately for him, today's safeties have to cover these explosive slot receivers & quick RBs & I don't think he's built for that. His game will be inside the box. I think his ceiling is special teams.

Here's to hoping I'm wrong

Maybe the old Seattle QB from the 90's, Rick Mirer, has a son that plays safety. That way we could have Smoke and Mirer in the defensive backfield.

With a name like that, he needs to come in smoke some WRs.

I wonder if Trill "the thrill" was too big a name to live up to, hence the real reason why he isn't here?

Naw. The reason he isn't here is he wasn't that thrilling. He's played one game in his two year career. Four snaps on defense and 15 snaps on special teams in the last game of 2021.

I haven't heard much from Smoke at OTA's but hopefully he gets to see more action at mini camp. He's been kind of quiet. Maybe he needs to get on social media again. ;)
