Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
“This organization, the family dynamic, the togetherness that they build every single day that you see from the top down, that’s special,” Carr said, via the team’s website. “That doesn’t just happen overnight. That’s years of work. So the foundation and the culture is already laid, I’ve just got to come in and be me. I’ve just been a fly on the wall, being encouraging and being a leader and doing those things when I need to be and saying something when I need to say something. But I’ve honestly enjoyed my time just getting to be me again. I think being in this building has rejuvenated me. It’s been a breath of fresh air for me. I never wanted to leave Las Vegas, but when I walked into this building after the last couple of months, I’m like, man, I’m glad I’m here.”

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
This is something that has been pointed out by several members here at B&G. The defense in the years that Carr was quarterbacking with the Raiders never ranked better than 20th and was usually among the very worst annually across the entire NFL. The Saints defense will be the best, by far, that he has ever had support his game.

I have a feeling that Derek Carr has rejuvenated a lot of Saints fans. I'm one of them!

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
'I love that guy': How Saints' Derek Carr, Michael Thomas' bond is blossoming Most of the calls were about getting to know each other and feeling out what it would be like to work together, and Carr came away impressed by Thomas’ dedication to getting back to his old self -- highlighted by his being named the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year. “That guy, just his mentality alone," Carr said of Thomas. "The injuries, it’s football. The injuries, 100 percent, they’re going to happen. I think we can all agree, he’s someone that dominates recovery. He’s not someone who’s going to cut corners or anything like that. So you trust that he’ll be as ready as he can be. "The football player, the mentality, that’s the thing I fell in love with, with him. I sat there on the phone, and I remember two, three, four days after we were on the phone, I just kept telling my wife, ‘I love that guy. I love his mentality.’ How do you not want to play football with that guy?” Thomas immediately felt like he’d found a kindred spirit in how Carr viewed the game. “He wants to win just like I want to win," Thomas said. "He’s just very disciplined. He’s on top of his stuff. He came here for a reason. That’s the same type of confidence I hear in his voice -- he came here for a reason, he came here to win. You can feel the sense of urgency. He loves ball. It’s not hard working with him. ... He tells me what to do, I tell him where I’m going to be, and we’re on the same page. We can execute at a high level.” Read lots more here ... |

Man, if we can stay healthy and field a consistent O line... I say the sky is the limit.

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
From the story linked above: Now Derek Carr can stress about correctly pronouncing Tchoupitoulas Street. The quarterback has learned the language of the New Orleans Saints. He’s no longer relating or referencing his time with the Las Vegas Raiders in order to understand. He’s on the same page as his new coaches and teammates. “I’m pretty far along from where I feel like I was, knowing the system and things like that,” Carr said. “You never want to feel like you have it all figured out. But I feel confident with where I’m at.” Carr has been in New Orleans for a little more than three months. The Saints have completed 10 days of voluntary organized team activities in that time. Carr worked out in every single one, asking questions and absorbing information. That’s a rather quick time to break his mental muscle memory from the Raiders, considering he spent all nine seasons of his career so far there. Carr’s goal was to have the lingo down before training camp, maybe even minicamp. Mission accomplished. When OTAs began, and Carr was first expressing these transition thoughts, Saints coach Dennis Allen did note the Saints’ offensive schemes and concepts are rather similar to those Carr already knew, so that helped ease the learning curve. “I think he's been awesome,” Allen said. “I think it's been great to see. I think Derek's done a really good job, and I think our receivers have done a heck of a job. He kind of raises the expectation of what those guys have to be able to do. There's a certain position that he wants them to be in and a certain way that he wants them to run the routes, and our guys have worked really well together to try to build that chemistry.” Read all the rest here ... |

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
I like where Underhill points out that none of the QB's the past two seasons could handle the full offensive package of making their own calls at the line, while Carr has that ability. That alone will give Carmichael more latitude to open up the book.

I had no idea that we were that good at pass blocking, but Dalton had a decent season behind a make shift line. I can only imagine what Derek Carr can do with a strong O-line.

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
His talent is legit. That talent on the Saints will be the best by far he's had around him. The division is maybe the worst in the NFL. It is teed up for him.

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
I get Drew Brees vibes from Derek Carr. They both process information rapidly and read defenses well at the line of scrimmage. They both take command of the huddle, work hard to earn their team mates respect, spending tireless hours in the film room, and spending valuable time with his receivers developing chemistry.
They both have a quick release and are good at the check downs when necessary. Both are evasive in the pocket while being somewhat mobile. Both can throw into a tight window well. Both have/had the ability to go deep. Both are vocal yet quiet leaders that people gravitate to. Both are good Christians with a strong belief in family values who are raising well behaved children who are married to beautiful clean wholesome looking women. Yes, I feel good about Derek Carr. It looks like it could be a seamless transition for Derek Carr who also efficiently runs the WCO. |
Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
According to this data Derek Carr was 2nd in the league in percentage of accurate throws to open receivers in 2022.

Re: Derek Carr: Joining Saints has rejuvenated me
I'm sure Carr has a huge chip on his shoulder and is ready to decimate any defense that suits up.
