Cesar Ruiz signs 4 year $44 Million Extension

Well deserved, especially in today's market shortage of offensive linemen.

I like the way you think. My first thought was....be a better guard than Peat after he got an extension. Otherwise, we've got a lot of money tied up again in an average to below average line.

The money does not seem terrible but I am skeptical giving all this money to a player who seems good but not dominant and took his sweet time to develop until the latter years of his rookie contract. Now that he is paid and he knows we dont have the cap space to bail if it doesnt work out, will he slack off? He wasn't holding out. He only had one good season and we could have waited to make sure he repeats it this year. The most we could lose is having to pay more if he gets even better. But on the other hand if he regresses or we need to rebuild, it would have been nice to have more financial flexibility. If we waited we could have decided to give the money to Granderson, Shaheed, etc instead. We would have also had some protection if Ruiz got injured which has been a frequent issue for all our other oline.

Not sure if you've taken a look across the league recently, but viable offensive linemen are at a premium. It is easily the thinnest position groups in the league as far as talent goes.

No one impressed me on the O line yesterday. In fact I was thinking.....:awe:

Yet we had over 351 yards in total offense, good for 8th best in the entire league. Pretty good.

Maybe good, but not very pretty!

A win is a win. I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss every day.

Great! Now go find another lineman somewhere. Anywhere. Isn't there another fifty year old vet out there willing to come out of retirement?

Here you go. I seriously doubt there's anything out there better than what we currently have on roster. If there were we would have already picked them up. Or someone else would have.

The Browns lost one of their tackles for the season, too. They are going down like crazy across the league.

Browns add another OL. I wonder if Zach Strief can still play?

Giants tackle looking to be missing time, as well.

As they should. Too little too late since they lost their expensive new QB four plays into their season.

And they keep coming. The Patriots just lost their starting tackle to a concussion.

Re: Cesar Ruiz signs 4 year $44 Million Extension

He didn't grade out well but he played better than he did last year, or the years before that. I think he's getting stronger at the point of attack and he moves well downfield blocking to open up running lanes. We could do much worse.....and we have! Peat, specifically.

Speaking to offensive lineman depth, or lack there of, the Colts just signed a player the Saints cut and didn't even want on their practice squad.

He had his shot and could not crack further up the ladder.

Yup. Exactly! We have better depth that some believe in our offensive line room. Not great, but better than most of the league I would imagine.

I like this move. Ruiz has steadily been getting better and I don't think he has peaked yet. Just small things like him getting to camp in excellent shape, you would expect that from a professional athlete but we know all too well that tha's not always the case.

Ruiz is trending up ya'll! It looks like he has finally taken to his position change and coaching. Hasn't he had a couple of different line coaches already? It took him a little while to turn the corner but that can happen when you learn a new position during a Covid lock down.

He moves well in space and in a phone booth. Yep. He is solid if not spectacular.

And for a lineman I take that every day. Especially at G you are not supposed to be spectacular. You have a job to do and everybody expects you to be perfect every play. The only time your name gets called is when you mess up. Its an unforgiving position to play and it takes a certain mentality.

Playing guard or center is quite different from each other and really different from being a tackle. You get to have you guy much closer to you which can be either a blessing or a curse depending on how good that player is.

Ruiz graded out terribly last week, but then again so did the entire O line. I'll be watching him closely this week. Last week my focus was on Penning. Check that....I'll be watching both of them for signs of improvement.

Graded out terribly by whom? I missed that. PFF or one of the networks?

BakoSaint 09-25-2023 05:46 PM

Re: Cesar Ruiz signs 4 year $44 Million Extension

Ruiz actually has the lowest rating on PFF of any of our oline. He hasn't been the one to give up the sacks, playing on the inside, but he hasn't played well and now he is hurt.

At this point I am sort of scared that Zach Baun or Trequan Smith or James Hurst or someone like that will string together a few good games and we will give them 4 years and $50 million. I feel like these needlessly early extensions were just a setup ploy for Allen and Loomis to give themselves big extensions, and the air came out just before they pulled it off.

Can you just start a dedicated thread for this so we can all just avoid it?

Thanks in advance.

If you give me $40-50 Million I will do a lot less than I did before. Loomis would agree to this.

I think Ruiz's poor play and injury immediately after signing a big extension are relevant to subsequent discussion of that extension even if reality upsets you.

Then you obviously have no sense of responsibility. Why does that not surprise me?

Tired of your drivel. Turning you off. See you later.
