Do the Jets trade for Winston?

Just read an article that said Winston might be the Jets best option if Rodgers is in fact done for the year. Not a lot out there in free agency and the Saints would probably part with him for a decent draft pick.

Saints would then have to sign someone though as our 3rd string is suspended for a few weeks and I don't think they have too much faith in Hill.

Interesting talking point anyway.

Re: Do the Jets trade for Winston?

I don't think this will happen, Winston is not an upgrade to what they already have in Zach Wilson. I am also not sure that Winston is the type of guy that can learn a new system and playbook quick enough to make an immediate impact for a QB needy team at this point in the season.

Re: Do the Jets trade for Winston?

That LT #76 looked as though he was trying cut the DE legs, not good, but he looked like he kneeled down and wiffed on the block that this morning sounds extended missed time or possibly season ending for Rodgers.

Been mentioned previously but watched back several games yesterday and league wide the talent level on the offensive line looks thin. If you have um keep um.

Zac Wilson looked much better than last season at times. Winston did not look good this preseason especially when the first read was not open. His pocket presence, scrambling and decision making once he has to moved look awkward at best. Think someone would have be down to 3rd string QB to consider this option.

Additionally he is our only real option if God forbid Carr goes down.

Never a big fan of the Rodgers drama but feel really bad for Rodgers and the Jets … 4 plays into the season.

Yup. I have been trying to make this point for weeks. And several more OL players went down this weekend. Seattle alone lost two OT's to turf toes.

As for trading Winston, do the Jets even have a decent pick remaining? I thought they gave up the boat just to get Rodgers.

Really stinks for Rodgers and the Jets.

I agree about suspect OL depth. On top of that - putting Chargers/Dolphins game aside - NFL defenses seem way ahead of the offenses. This will level out somewhat as we get further into the season ... but personally I'm starting to feel college football games have more flow (long commercials notwithstanding) and are more entertaining to watch until these NFL offenses shake off all the cobwebs and get into gear after a few weeks or so.

They have a few picks left. Including the Broncos 4th rounder. Which if they traded to the Saints would give the Saints 3 of the Broncos picks in this draft I think.

Re: Do the Jets trade for Winston?

J E T S aren't desperate enough. Winston is a solid #2 QB at this stage of his career. If he thought he could push somewhere, it's very likely he would already have made a move. He's under contract for this year, and we'll see for next year. If "pretty boy" Haener develops enough, maybe the Saints make the move later in the year with a team desperate enough.

I'd be shocked if the Saints are even remotely interested in trading Jameis.

Good depth & not expensive.

To show you how bad it's getting Seattle just had to sign a 50 year-old tackle off the street. LOL!

Re: Do the Jets trade for Winston?

Guido correctly pointed out that there is a severe lack of O line players in the NFL right now, and it is already obvious when a 50 year old comes out of retirement. I'd like to see us invest heavily in the line next year. Peat is on his last year here. Hurst is decent but can definitely be upgraded. How long is McCoy going to be able to run around on one leg?

We traded up for Saldiveri this year, who plays with a nasty streak, and I'd like to see us bolster the line with a couple of draft picks next year like him if possible. I've been pounding the table for the Saints to make a trade for awhile now, but we might have to wait until the draft next year to get reinforcements along the O line.

I was being a bit factious about Peters being 50 (he's only 41), but the point remains. Pickings are slim across the whole league right now on the o-line. I'm wondering if all of these spread offenses across the college game are having a negative effect on the quality of offensive linemen coming into the NFL over the past decade or so.

Finger fart is more like it. :p Large hands and fingers paired with arthritis means I have to spellcheck everything. Unintended legit words can slip by unless I proofread.

Maybe as a backup. Or some other vet. I'll bet they stick with Wilson as the starter.

We could trade them Taysom and then the Jets could run Wildcat and Option plays with Breece and Cook all game.

Now I'm being facetious!

Re: Do the Jets trade for Winston?

No matter how many times Brady has sworn to god that he is 200% retired, I would not rule out his being tempted to come back for one year with an elite defense and elite weapons on offense.

If the Jets want Winston I would trade Winston for a 4th. Depth is valuable but in the unlikely event Carr is injured, I don't trust our oline that didn't protect Carr to protect both a more brittle Winston and a newly more brittle returning Carr and to lead us to a championship season through all that adversity. I think if Carr goes down our season is probably over. And in the unlikely event its not, I think Hill and Haener are almost as good as Winston for a few games. There is a recency bias but remember that in one of our preseason games Haener looked better than Winston. And Haener will be back from suspension soon. And Hill would be better with legit deep threats than what he looked like in 2021 with no receivers. We could also pick up a player like Zappe or Greer or something if we traded Winston.

It's true that oline is scarce. Thats why getting more middle round picks for a player we are unlikely to retain long term would be valuable. We can use those middle round picks to draft or trade for oline. Teams out of contention will be willing to trade oline at the deadline. A 4th round pick could also be used to move up for the right oline who we want in the 2nd or 3rd if we don't like the oline likely to be available in the 4th. Or we could trade a 2024 4th for a 2025 3rd and plan for the future.

I think they at least give him the chance to win the job for the rest of the season. Still think they will bring in an experienced QB. Just in case.

Quinnen Williams for Winston and a high pick. Guy is a beast.

Williams carries a more than $47 million cap hit to the Jets if traded or cut. They just signed a 4 year $96 million extension through the end of 2027. That dream is a tad out of reach. :D
