Literally, they've had the panthers on the ropes the entire game and they inexplicably let them go 70 yards in 50 seconds using zero timeouts and scoring a TD.

That can't happen

I would take a time machine back 6 months and do a rebuild over this version of 2-0. We just faced a team that Atlanta beat by 14 which then lost 3 more starters and we beat them by 3. I think you honestly can't look at us as division favorites after barely escaping the bottom team by 3 points.

I think we could be just about as competitive had we stayed out of the Carr sweepstakes, picked up someone like Mayfield or Huntley to compete with Winston for cheap, and spent our money cleaning up our salary cap by getting rid of guys like Peat, Hill (if he wouldn't take a major paycut to reflect that he ain't Kelce), Thomas, and Kamara who won't be part of the solution long term.

I always thought we would win this game. I hoped we would look better and win by more. Given this result, I expect the upcoming games to be rough.

Carr I think is the guy, he just needs to acclimate to the offense.
The Prevent D at the end was dumb
The O-Line needs to quit giving up so many sacks.
The D may be the best in the league.
Carmichael needs to take more PA shot plays.
Kamara will help our offense a ton.
We have great WRs.
Not sure what else to say.

Carr blows those guys out of the water. He's still growing more accustomed to the receivers, it takes time. A lot of the issues were communication issues other than the O-line being porous. Carr made a lot of great throws in this game.

We can’t say x team beat y time by z, so if the Saints don’t beat y team by the same amount or more as x team then they aren’t as good. Styles make fights. Our offensive line isn’t the greatest right now and the Panthers have a great front 7.

Any team can win on any given game day rez we see it every year. Teams, especially this year, defenses are playing ahead of their offensive units and we have heard several coaches already stated they will look at having starters play more snaps next year. 12 plays for our offensive starters I think is clearly impacting its performance more so than usual in the early part of the season.

We have played against a couple of really good defenses and won, called it ugly, but we scored more points and in the end “W” is the only statistic that counts. I felt like the play calling was too predictable, less motion, run on first down. It allowed the Panthers D to tee off on Carr way to often. The Panthers had the script.

After all the criticism and hand wringing of the off season moves on the defensive front, the addition of Sheppard, Saunders, Breese with Jordan and Granderson certainly looks to have been the right moves by Allen and Saints scouting personnel.

Linebackers … Ggggreat that’s all that needs to be said.

Our CB’s are elite, just get Adebo to stop committing off ball penalties that cancel great defensive play, 2 weeks in a row now.

Safety play is solid.

Clean up the mistakes, keep improving, stay healthy and on to the next test … :bng:

Agreed. Allen as a defensive coordinator is truly elite. Pete Carmichael has to be replaced though. We’re so unimaginative and far too conservative. With our receivers we should be taking shots down the sideline anytime we get 1 on 1 coverage. It’ll open things up underneath and in the run game.

I believe that will be coming more when Carr can get enough time to make those plays.

I say bring back Gruden. Unless he's completely 86'd from the NFL I'd like to see what he could bring to New Orleans.

Pete C isn't creative enough & is predictable.

How do we know if he's not helping out now from the behind the scenes ?

With the current lawsuit he has going against the NFL I would think that "behind the scenes" would be the only way he'd be allowed in the league. :p

Sean Payton's having his own offense issues in Denver right now. It doesn't matter how innovative and creative you might be if the offensive line isn't holding up their part of the bargain yet.

Re: Saints @ Panthers Game Day Thread

One question with the offensive play calling that I have, where are the screen plays, so far nonexistent. Is that because of the limited backfield options? It has always been one of tool available in preventing the Defense from teeing off on your QB.

Predictable, static, conservative play calling in the first half, better in the second half they were much less predictable. Taysom behind center running and throwing even if only there 1 time. Taking handoffs/toss in the backfield all of which puts more pressure on the defenses. The guy is Beast running the ball especially when he get a head steam. Game plan him in something other than RPO that is statistically 99.9% Run so far this season.

Let’s play and game plan to win 1st-4th quarter not only on offense but also on defense. Prevent defenses are a holdover philosophy from a bygone era in the NFL. If you have a good defense why take away their ability to control the out come rather than being a passive participant.

2 down 21 to go.

Agreed, the Defense had them on the ropes the entire game.

The "prevent" defense didn't prevent anything. The Panthers marched 70 yards in 50 seconds, using zero timeouts and scoring a TD.

That's what I saw. If Bell picks up the ball, that's a fumble recovered by Carolina, right?

Penning holds up well against bull rushes and he is a mauler in the run game, but attack him with speed and he loses much too often. If I can see that, opposing DCs will see it and it won't get any prettier. Don't know how to fix that fast aside from getting him some TE/FB help.

Not ready to call for Carmichael's head. He's working with what he's got. Let's see how it turns out with Kamara back.

If the cost of winning is bringing in Gruden - that price is too high for me. Still dislike him so much.

Defensive line play the positive surprise of the season.

I said last night, I think one or more of the defensive captain will have conversations with DA about statistically diminishing an outstanding performance with that kind of dated defense that seldom accomplishes it stated purpose. Last night only thing it prevented was a 20-9 win.

They drafted somebody like Chris Olave who masterfully ran the bubble screen at Ohio State and rarely use it. He scored the one time we ran it (stepped out of bounds though). Shaheed runs the bubble screen well too because he’s so great in open field. MT can run tunnel screens on the goal line. There’s so many things we can do with this offense and we just don’t. Carr missed a lot of open guys, but still. I do like Taysom Hill having the option to through that bubble to Shaheed on those two draw plays. Love that design. I also like Taysom Hill in the backfield as an actual running back. He’s an excellent power back. That honestly needs to be his position.

Re: Saints @ Panthers Game Day Thread

The issue with screens, if I'm not mistaken, is that it takes a great deal of coordination and execution by the offensive line to not only sell it, but to carry out their individual roles off the line. If we are still working on getting the basic pass blocking down how can we expect execution of the screen yet?

I suspect it will all be coming and wish we could get this all hammered out in the preseason, but times they have changed.
