Next winter. I like to have the wood as dry as possible. Year-old split birch makes for great firewood.

In my advanced age I've resorted to using a log splitter. I still ache but I'm not being placed on IR anymore.

We went strictly gas fireplace a few years back. I had a line run to our fireplace some 20 years ago when we installed the pool in the back for the heater. I just used it to get the fires going for several years, but finally gave up and went with the faux logs. You don't get the smell and sound of wood, but it looks real and is a lot less of a mess.

I hear you Ice. My uncle lived (did Metal Refinery work) in Fairbanks for about 5-6 years back in the early 90s. Some fascinating stories. Beautiful, yet "bitter cold" as he used to tell it :p.
