Taysom Hill

Even the announcers said, “You gotta leave Taysom in at quarterback at this point” after Carr left the game. His record is 7-2 as a starter. I’m not saying he’s the best QB in the league, but he has some intangibles that make him hard to stop and galvanizes the team around him.

It would surprise me if Carr is ready to go anytime soon, so yes, starting Hill makes sense.

Most exciting thing in black and gold right now. And that’s about it.

As a starter, I don't believe he would ever last a full season healthy. His age, style of play, injury history, and our lackluster offensive line would get him hurt. Plus there are a bunch of clauses in his contract to raise his pay if he gets significant playing time at QB.

If we were championship contenders with a real shot at a ring I could see the argument to play Hill if he was the hot hand. However, I think our best option is to rebuild, so I don't think the best way to do that is to go into 2024 with a 34 year old run-first QB starter trying to escalate his contract to $15+ million a year and a $30 million 32 year old backup. I think if Hill was a regular starter every down it would be easier for defenses to build their personnel and practices around stopping his runs. I believe this would force him into the pocket more behind our porous oline and he would take big hits like Carr is taking, plus it would set him up to take bigger hits on his runs with the opposing defense stacked with run stuffers.

Hill is a cool player. He might be more effective than a Derek Carr who does zero for games at a time in the red zone or a Jameis Winston who throws tons of INTs. But being better than them does not make him an average or above average QB. Perhaps it gets us from 25-30th at QB to 20-25th at QB. We have never seen Hill be a very good passer. So he becomes some version of Justin Fields or Marcus Mariota with a more physical Adrian Peterson type running style but probably not way different passing ability. Maybe other players will play better around him. Maybe we will win the division by a game and only lose to the Cowboys by 13. And then next year he is 34 years old, making $12 million or something with tons of incentives to raise his salary, and Carr has $30 million guaranteed to sit on the bench, and we can no longer risk Hill on special teams and other plays, and then week 11 next year after kicking in a bunch of incentives Hill tears his ACL with our record at 6-5 and Carr trots back out. Where does that get us?

I don't think any fan in their right mind wants to see Hill penciled in as the 24 starter. It's about playing him at QB now as he is likely the better option for this moment. If/when the Saints are mathematically eliminated this year, then I want to see Haener. We already know the Saints will not be able to move on from Carr, so the 24 season had better look something like a 1st round QB pick, Carr and Haener, let the best man win.

I want to see Haener at QB with Hill in to take pressure off him.

Let him run a few bootlegs, get him out of the pocket a little.

We know what Carr and Jameis are, and neither of them are starting material. Why the FO can't see this is mind numbing.

Critical moments in the ball game, 4th and 6 .. Taysom Hill isn't on the field. Wait, what?

Not even use him as a decoy? A playmaker? A proven guy? SMDH.

I wouldn't even want Pete Carmichael calling a high school game. He's trash.

Agreed, and why has Graham been wasting away in obscurity this year? yeah, he's a blocking liability for sure but he is arguably one of our greatest red zone threats in the history of our franchise. All makes no sense

They won't let Hill take first team snaps or see the majority of the game snaps because they're afraid they might like it.

Re: Taysom Hill

This was the first game where he looked visibly frustrated about being pulled from the QB position. And he was justified to feel that way. He has an “it” factor that pushes his teammates to rise up and if the coaching staff cannot see or utilize that, then it may be time for a change.
