Reggie Bush

Career Stats

Looking back at Reggie's career, was it worthy of a number two overall pick?
While he did have incredible moments at times for the Saints, the Miami leap comes to mind, his stats looks average compared to many other RBs, many of whom were not even drafted. Is SP to blame on how he was utilized? His production seemed to increase after he left the Saints. Was SP early in using a two back system in his offense, thereby limiting his production? Injuries did play a part for sure. He did have a ten year career, still, which is longer than normal typically for RBs. We probably don't win that SB without him. His dual threat as a receiver is what we see today in the game. Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas were quite a Saints pair.

That 2006 Saints draft was a killer one too.
New Orleans Saints
1 Bush, Reggie, RB, Southern California, 2
2 Harper, Roman, SS, Alabama [from Cle], 43
4 Evans, Jahri, G, Bloomsburg, Pa. [from Phi], 108
5 Ninkovich, Rob, DE, Purdue, 135
6 Hass, Mike, WR, Oregon State, 171
6 Lay, Josh, DB, Pittsburgh [from GB], 174
7 Strief, Zach, T, Northwestern, 210
7 #Colston, Marques, WR, Hofstra, 252

We paid dearly for not keeping Ninko.

2006 draft If not Reggie, who would you have picked that year?
Looking at this list, maybe we trade back and collect another #1 pick, and still get Ngata and another quality defense player? Joseph Addai could have been a RB here, not that SP would have picked an LSU player.

Re: Reggie Bush

The fact that defenses were forced to account for Reggie at all times was worth more than his stats reflect.

The electricity of Reggie was a feeling I won't forget.

We don’t win the SB without him IMO.

Amazing how really hitting on a draft or 2 can impact a team.

Bush was worth the #2 pick for more than his production on the football field. He was that beautiful new sports car after the region had just suffered a major tragedy with Katrina and needed to feel happy about something. Brees was an unknown commodity in 2006 but Bush in college was straight electric.

Having a SoCal star dating a Kardashian on the team made the Saints more of a household name. That coverage gave the team the exposure it needed to have the NFL NOT screw us for a season. We put that together to win it all.

Re: Reggie Bush

Reggie Bush wasn’t utilized in the proper way to reflect in his production, but his gravity on the field is something we haven’t had since he was traded. You could never, any instance, put a linebacker or a safety on Reggie Bush. When he split out wide, even cornerbacks had to back up off of him and respect the speed. He was a mismatch for anybody that wasn’t an elite cornerback. He would dominate in the league today. And yeah, we don’t win the SB without him. Sometimes marketability can be more valuable than production.

Or missing on a few picks each year. It's always nice when you can land a diamond in the rough, but when you whiff on splash players, it reall hurts your growth.

Talent evaluation is one of your greatest team assets.

Remind me again why we got rid of Ninkovich and let him go to the Patriots?
