The Saints Backup QB Battle - Who Wins?

Who is going to come out on top as the decided backup to starter Derek Carr?

If I had to pick I'd say Rattler.

Not quite sure how to articulate why I feel that way, so I'll just cast my vote and move on. ;)

Need game time film to fully answer. Good for us that it's here for us all to see soon.

Most likely Haener because i think the front office values seniority and paying your dues. I would prefer Rattler because he has more upside. Best case they all look great so we can trade one for a right tackle.

Really doesn’t matter. Neither one will be worth a damn once they play a few games behind our offensive line.

Holding judgement until I can see some pre-season reps on Saturday.

Some of us will see tomorrow. If you have the NFL+ app you can watch on your phone. Other wise you have to be in the WVUE viewing area.

Two very different quarterbacks. If there was a must in game against a superior team where our chances of winning were marginal, I'd want Rattler in there. He has the arm talent to carry an offense on it's back. Between the two, if anyone is going to pull a horseshoe out their ass, it's him. His struggle has always been maintaining any level of consistency. High risk, high reward, low floor player.

I put Haener more in that game managing type quarterback. The Trent Dilfer, Rich Gannon type. He's probably the safer bet should Carr miss an extended amount of time. He won't hurt you too bad but we wouldn't be able to rely on his arm to win football games. There's nothing wrong with that if you have a strong defense and a good running game. His arm might actually fit Kubiak's offense better.

With that said, I didn't see much of Haener in college so I could be limiting Haener's upside.

The fact that it’s this close of a battle between the rookie and the second year player tells me we need to roll with the rookie.

That's just it ... he was Joe Montana-esque at Fresno St with his late game heroics. He did an interview with Mariucci that opened some eyes.

Maybe, maybe not... friendly reminder who was QB coach and OC last year.
Let the games begin.

I think both are superior to Carr, TBH. It's too late in the QB career game for Carr to have a Rich Gannon renaissance awakening.

IDK about that Smash. He had a 68 comp%, Near 4,000 yards and three times more TDs than picks in his first year with the club behind a very questionable OLine. I don’t think Rattler or Haener would have done that. Nor do I think his performance (or lack of) was why the club missed the playoffs last year. JMO.

That's a good point.

I think Haener wins the top backup job for now. Once the season gets rolling and if the Saints are out of contention, then a move from Carr to Rattler would make lots of sense.

I simply don't see but a single scenario where the Saints would be out of contention this season, especially in the NFC South. That would be if Carr suffers a season ending injury. In that case it would have been one of the young guys that couldn't keep us in the running. I could see a move from Carr after the season if for some reason we do not make the playoffs. Not because that move would mean a better QB in 2025, but more for cap related reasons. It would be that "rebuild" which I dislike by fielding an inferior team hoping (wishing, dreaming, etc.) that something better could come in the future.

You’re consistently hoping (wishing, dreaming, etc.) that something better could come in the future anyway. You have said that it might take a couple of decades. The sooner we move new chess pieces into position, the better.
