No longer suckered in...
In years past, I would have been super pumped that the Saints could win yesterday at home against a mediocre Rams team and would have been double excited about the game to know going in that the division leader dropped their game.
A win by the Saints and they are only 1 game out of 1st in the division! LOL I've seen that movie far too many times. The Saints once again choked and failed to help themselves in a WEAK division. Admit it - if you have followed this team for 5 or more years you knew it was coming. We've done just bad enough to miss out on a chance to win a piss poor division by a couple of stupefying losses and just good enough to miss a top 10 draft pick by a couple of meaningless wins. https://www.playoffstatus.com/nfl/nfldraftorder.html |
Re: No longer suckered in...
Lady Gayle has established a losing culture, and as Guido says, “It’s not about winning” and “There’s nothing we can do about it.”

Re: No longer suckered in...
I've watched that many Saints games that I know that a long, time consuming, scoring drive by the opposition is immediately followed by a 3 and out by us.
They just aren't good enough to do anything meaningful. Division has been up for grabs for years and they just don't want it. Shame really. The more they deny the rebuild, the longer we'll be below average. |
Re: No longer suckered in...
Maybe y'all just need to move on to another team that you think is run the right way.
 |

Re: No longer suckered in...
We all knew and expected a reset following the departure of Brees then Payton.
We're just p!$$ed off by Loomis's seemingly stubborn unwillingness to realize it himself. I'd venture to say Loomis marched along on his own personal vanity project to prove the last 15 years weren't just about #9 or the head coach... Now it's so painfully obvious that the demur owner had to step in and fire his buddy buddy which Loomis was clearly not in favor of. Yeah, things suck right now and you know what? It's OKAY to b!tch about it. |
Re: No longer suckered in...
Even if this team were to win the division it doesn't really matter. We aren't even close to sniffing on a Super Bowl. Sadly, it could have been at home this year. But it tis what it is.
Go Lions! My Dad is from Michicgan. I've always been a Lions fan on the side since Barry Sanders days growing up. |
Re: No longer suckered in...
It'd be cool to see a team lose their Super Bowl virginity and break through - Lions, Vikings, Bills, Chargers. It's been awhile and the last one was the Eagles which was just gross.

Re: No longer suckered in...
This "mortgage the future" strategy started in 2011, with that taste of Super Bowl lingering. The concept of winning another Super Bowl with Brees during the high point of his career didn't cause us to cry out much. A couple of us may have wondered why pay to keep the team intact, but nobody called for new ownership or Loomis' firing. The reality of the choice between keeping known productive assets vs. replacement with the unknown is not a novel concept in sports or exclusive to the Saints in the NFL.
Further, it's actually less profitable to win a Super Bowl than just make the playoffs. As we have seen, perceived value of players is distorted with a ring on their fingers. This causes a huge inflation on current roster salaries across the board. What's worse, is that the QB position appears to be WAY overvalued vs total contribution. (I present practically any QB other than Mahomes as evidence, and even then, he was working off a rookie contract for his first 5 years). My point is, the potential for winning increases asset value, and not necessarily winning itself if there's no real downside to losing (like in the English Premier League). Merch, concessions, co-marketing are more important to the bottom line. No change in ownership will dislodge the economic model. What will change the direction is loss of ticket revenues and lower merch sales. You can point to the J-E-T-S jets jets jets and the GI-AINTS as examples of teams where they can field a roster of penguins and still sell out the stadium and sell merch. So, stop clutching your pearls about the things you can't change and stop going to the games/buying gear. That will motivate everyone to alter strategies relative to winning/managing salary cap. |

The fans can stop supporting the Saints if they want. They’ll be in another city faster than you can say Benson.

Re: No longer suckered in...
There is losing, and then there is LOSING.
"losing" is when you get outplayed or outcoached by a team on a given day, regroup, then bounce back. Fans can digest those losses and move along for the most part. LOSING is a cultural/habitual/inexplicable thing. You lose to teams that you should not. You don't lose due to a great play by the other team but instead due to sheer incompetence on the part of your team. Your players can't be consistent. Fundamentals are missing. Coaching is subpar. All the breaks seem to go against you. And yet your organization seems to be asleep at the wheel, foot to the floor, headed off a cliff. We are doing the later... It is not acceptable. If your goal as Saints brass is to have asses in seats at the Dome, then you better do something. Either outreach to visiting teams fans or improving the talent level on the Saints. |
