Penning Trade to Patriots
I don't see why, but here's the story.
https://www.si.com/nfl/patriots/news...trevor-penning The New England Patriots have holes everywhere heading into the NFL offseason, but one of their most glaring weaknesses is along their offensive line. Finding help in the trenches should be a massive priority for the Patriots in the coming months, as they need to ensure they protect quarterback Drake Maye. Fortunately, New England will have plenty of cap room to sign free agents, but it can also explore the trade market for answers. David Latham of Last Word On Sports has identified a very interesting trade target for the Pats: New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Trevor Penning. "The Patriots could use three new tackles next year, as Vederian Lowe and Demontrey Jacobs are not NFL-caliber starters, and third-round pick Caedan Wallace looked abysmal in limited work," Latham wrote. "Trevor Penning may not be a superstar, but the trade candidate is better than all three of those players. While he’s best as a swing tackle, he could start at either tackle position and help keep Maye upright after a tumultuous rookie season." Penning, who played his collegiate football at Northern Iowa, was selected by the Saints with the 19th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. He became a full-time starter for New Orleans this season, starting all 17 games. However, while he was efficient as a run blocker, he struggled in pass blocking, posting a subpar 51.6 overall grade in that department over at Pro Football Focus. But Penning really can't be any worse than what he Patriots currently have along their offensive line, and, at the very least, he is a former first-round pick with potential. New England's offensive line was probably the worst in the NFL in 2024, so it needs to find answers one way or another. |
Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
Do we want (need) to start over with this position? It seems like a grab for the shiniy new thing (draft pick) instead of going with what we know. Penning has made big time progress from the raw talent he had as a draft pick.
I'd hate to see the work we put in to make him serviceable go to waste on yet another bad pick by Loomis and company. |
Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
If you don't get a first rounder back for him I don't see why you would consider it.

Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
Penning has largely been a bust and is mediocre but I don't think we could get a 2nd round for him, and if not we are probably better off having a cheap starter in 2025 and then potentially getting a 3rd-4th round comp pick if another team signs him as started for 2026. I would take a 2nd for him.

Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
Trade him for Joe Milton and draft a LT. Move Fuaga to his natural spot on the Right. Grab a running back like Raheim Sanders from South Carolina and bring in Todd Monken. Get another Guard and focus on running the ball effectively while we rebuild this defense.

Love this idea. Milton could compete for the QB job or be a Taysom 2.0. |
Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
ML isn't interested in trading Trevor Penning.
His 5th year option value is projected to be $16.9M or so & I don't think the Saints will pick that up. Just let him play out the 2025 season & evaluate to see if he is even worth a long term deal. Personally, I'd select another tackle in the 2025 draft. |

Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
I loved Milton at Tennessee, was hoping we'd get him in the draft. I'd look to draft a tackle and guard in this draft regardless of keeping Penning.
I love these two guards at the moment. Donovan Jackson, Ohio State LG Jaedon Roberts, Alabama RG |
Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
No chance I’m trading and adequate tackle in this environment. I agree you give Peening another year and make a decision at that point. As far as drafting another offensive lineman that, defensive line and secondary is all anyone in the Saints situation should be drafting.

Re: Penning Trade to Patriots
Realistically I think the only way we would trade him is if he is secretly considered to have character issues inside the building. At this point I think we need to focus on drafting a guard more than a tackle because I believe McCoy is getting older and had a lot of injuries this year and if we keep playing musical chairs journeymen beside McCoy it will shorten McCoys career. But at the same time, it is possible that people inside the building do have a problem with McCoy. You never quite know which mediocre/struggling players a front office will become discouraged with in terms of conditioning, preparation, etc.

Just wondering but has there ever been any talk about moving Penning inside? Not even sure if he’s ever played the guard position or not in college.

LG is such a huge need and OL is so hard to get right, why make two problems bigger at the same time
