With the 184th pick, Saints draft RB Devin Neal in the 6th round

Analysis By Lance Zierlein, NFL Analyst

Draft Projection: Rounds 5-6

Overview
Workload runner with NFL size and 4 years of steady production to help elevate the program. Neal runs with a nice blend of patience and decisiveness to choose the right lanes and maximize each carry. He lacks top-end burst and speed, which will shrink the field for him, but he’s a fall-forward runner with good contact balance and a nose for short-yardage conversions. He has good instincts and soft hands in space and can help as a leak-out or swing-pass option. His blue-collar approach isn’t exciting but it is effective and Neal has the ability to develop into a backup three-down back.

Strengths
Runs behind his blocks while maintaining decisiveness.
Keeps the run on track and won’t deviate unnecessarily.
Plays with synced-up eyes and feet for sudden transitions.
Prioritizes ball security and has a low fumble rate.
Pushes through initial contact and falls forward for yardage.
Converts short-yardage carries with downhill mentality and forward lean.
Capable receiver out of the backfield with smooth hands.

Weaknesses
Average early burst to keep defenses from crowding his runs.
Takes time to gather feet and cut on a hard flow wide.
Lacks creativity to find alternate pathways when needed.
Average “make-you-miss” after the catch in space.
Needs better strain and finish to keep his quarterback protected.

Compared to Kareem Hunt.... not bad if true.

No real breakaway speed with a 4.58 40-yard dash but good acceleration and he looks shifty. I hope we can get him enough carries.

In most every article I read what stands out is how people talk about him having a great character, being a leader and hardworking.

This was before he joined Kansas:

He looks like a Blue collar lunch pail hard working kind of player. Those guys are the glue that holds a team together. He's the kind of player you can count on when his number is called.

I don't think he's better than Kendre Miller.

Maybe, maybe not… but it’s a pretty low bar to beat. I hope Kendre finally shows up something this year.

I think he can be at least as good as Tony Jones Jr was. The dream scenario is if he turns out to be Pierre Thomas.

He will show up and show out. Productive style.

I'm coming around on this one, he's a solid player. Probably a good compliment to Kamara.

This kid looks like the real deal. I hope I’m not cursing him but he could take over for AK next year or two

TCU has a ton of potential but he’s gotta take better care of his body.

A healthy Miller AND Neal could be a good problem to have.

Good luck at camp :bng:

Realistically a RB Kamara's age, about to turn 30 in June, could go down with a career spiraling injury or become completely ineffective at any time immediately. It seems like only about 10% of elite running backs can still be effective at age 31 so I would say that in 2026 its not just possible, but probable, that the Saints leading rusher will not be Alvin Kamara. Also, Alvin Kamara has an $11.5m salary for 2026 of which $8.5m is not guaranteed. If Kamara even has an off year in 2025, it would make no sense to retain him for 2026 to a normal sober GM. Kamara has been a great Saint but the stats are what they are on aging RBs. 90% somebody is taking over within 2 years.

Triple monster at RB would indeed be a great problem to have behind our two bookend tackles for he next ten years.
