Shough’s agent knew that the fact Shough is pegged to be the starter gave him leverage and when push came to shove they guaranteed the whole contract. Given the whole contract was less than every other starting QB in the league is getting for a single season it is extremely reasonable. What exactly is it that you think might be collusion? And who would the parties that are colluding with others to create collusion? I am confused. ![]() |

Dart and Shough were the two quarterbacks we identified as potential franchise leaders. When Dart came off the board, we went with Shough. Once you make that kind of pick, especially at quarterback, you stand behind it. The leap’s already been taken. At that point, what does guaranteed money really mean against the cap? If he turns out to suck, we are in a terrible situation regardless. I have faith in this guy though. Other second-rounders are getting it. If we believe in him, we should show it. If anything, it could lift some pressure and help him play more freely.

That would have had major repercussions. The NFL is not a benevolent democracy, its mob rule, and you have play your cards smart to avoid getting the knife in your back. We played it smart by waiting until the pick ahead of Shough got a guaranteed deal and then doing the same, so it only affected us. That was fine. There is the 10-20% possibility that Shough will be the next Josh Rosen, Christian Hackenburg, etc, every QB pick especially in later rounds is a risk, but that will only cost us like 1% of the cap. Caving on league interests could have cost us much much more, like playoff eliminations, manufactured investigations forfeiting picks, Super Bowl hosting opportunities, etc.

Hot take ..
Tyler Shough will be become a better NFL QB than Dart inside of 3 seasons. The tools are there. We'll see. |
