I suppose that the agent doesn't hold the player out. But realistically, 2nd rounder salaries are only $1.79 million to $2.95 million a year over the four year term of the contract and a decent percentage of them make and stay with the team for the short haul, at least. That's really not that much to guarantee in the scheme of things.

From years 2000-2017, only 27% of the second round picks signed a second contract with the same team. Injuries, coaching changes, performance, etc all play into it but that's a small number especially compared to 1st rounders (46% retention rate). I just don't see the value in it unless the team receives a guarantee in return. |
