Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
Mathieu was a great Saint and has been on cap friendly deals for a couple years so its not a big financial savings. I think the total savings will be about $4 million over the next two years. It would be much better for the Saints cap situation if Hill or Jordan retired. If the Saints sign a mid level veteran free agent to replace Mathieu it could actually cost them money. The best thing the Saints could do is embrace the youth movement and give the extra spot to a young player who can develop into an asset down the road.

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
I think this is Jordan’s last year. Idk about hill. He seems like he will never be ready. This should bring us another compensatory pick though

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
Not really. Compensatory picks are based upon free agents lost to other teams. Players released or retiring do not fall into the compensatory pick formula in any way.

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
I did see on espn we were looking at a former colts safety to replace him. That would take away as well i assume. Still sitting at 26 million cap room

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
No. Mathieu was not a free agent so he doesn't factor into compensatory picks at all. And cap room doesn't work quite like that.

Saints sign 26 year old Blackmon to replace TM. I have not seen the details just yet

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
Neither retirements nor post-draft signings (deadline is right after draft) affect the comp pick formula. The period to affect comp picks is basically over. The Saints are expected to get a 4th for losing adebo.

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement
An interesting side note is that newly signed Julian Blackmon's regular jersey number is Mathieu's 32. However, he is wearing #28 in camp today. Are the Saints saving 32 for the Honey Badger in case he decides to return prior to the regular season? |
