19 days until Saints season opener: Every player to wear No. 19

That brings us to my favorite Saints player ever. I was working for the NCSU student newspaper (The Technician) and the news came across the teletype (yes we had a teletype) that Guido Merkens had signed with the Saints. I had already been anointed with the nickname of Guido by all involved and they couldn't wait to let me know the news also knowing I was a longtime Saints fan.

Saints' History of No. 19

QB Gary Wood (1967)
K Tom Dempsey (1969-70)
K Bill McClard (1973-75)
WR/QB Guido Merkens (1981-85)
WR Alonzo Johnson (1998)
WR Devery Henderson (2004-12)
WR Jake Lampman (2016)
WR Ted Ginn Jr. (2017-19)
K Brett Maher (2021)
CB Chris Harris Jr. (2022)
K Blake Grupe (2023-current)

From the link above ...

Decades before the versatile jack-of-all-trades Taysom Hill, there was Guido Merkens. After coming over from the Houston Oilers, Merkens wore No. 26 for one season before switching to No. 19 and the offensive side. Primarily a wide receiver after the switch, Merkens also filled in at quarterback, running back, returned punts, and even filled in at punter. Merkens had 32 receptions for 519 yards and 2 touchdowns, averaged over 10 yards on punt returns, and punted four times. Most of that was during the 1981 season. He started one game at quarterback, a loss, for the Saints in 1982. At quarterback, Merkens threw for 213 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
