The New Orleans Saints have named Spencer Rattler the starting Quarterback for week one against the Arizona Cardinals.

Considering both QBs had near identical preseason stats, it was a crapshoot either way.

I think if Kellen started Shough and then had to bench him, the draft pick would look like a failure.

If Spencer fails and Shough comes in a bit more prepared, then we'll see what could happen.

Pulling for Spencer though, I want him to light up the scoreboard

I’m not the coach but this see to be a pretty stupid move to me. He has shown nothing to put him in this position. The only thing I can think is they don’t want to throw Shough to the wolves.

Maybe that’s exactly their thinking. I get the feeling that we’ll be seeing Shough this season. If not, that means Rat is doing well.

Yup. Agreed. Actually, week five at home against the Giants may be the perfect time to insert Shough.

My guess is that Spencer knows the offense better and sees the field better at this point in both of their careers.

That should even out as time goes on this season.

Curious to see if they'll sign a new QB to operate as the inactive QB3 emergency QB, or if they re-roster Haener for that purpose. I would be surprised if they roll with 2 QB's and no emergency option for very long.

Kamara has been designated as the emergency QB before. You never know.

There will be a QB on the practice squad and when Taysom returns from PUP he will be the de-facto emergency QB.

We are at a point where there is nothing more to be learned except by letting one play and see how that washes out. Rattler is the safe choice to start this season and likely is more instinctual with the playbook.

Shough needs time to develop instinctual execution with the playbook as evident in his draft analysis showing erratic decision making which would be further amplified by lacking a strong familiarity with the playbook. He has had a lot of injuries and may be hit shy. Coach does not want to sacrifice him to our O-Line just yet.

The aspect of starting Rattler I also like is it may be better for team culture. Make it more of a meritocracy like Payton's early years - no one's starting spot is assumed based on draft round or guaranteed money. Though no shade at Shough in saying this - I think he's doing fine, just not where Rattler is yet.

If Rattler performs better than expected, he'll keep Shough sidelined, and we'll have likely a winning record. If not, or if an injury sidelines Rattler, Shough will be more prepared later in the year.
