Classless

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson hurled himself at a New Orleans television camera crew on Sunday and got into an argument with a fan.

The WWL-TV camera crew said Benson lunged at them when they filmed him leaving the Saints game and that the owner then got into a shouting match with a fan.

Benson could not be reached for comment and Saints officials did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The team owner is going through a very rough patch with fans and Louisiana officials. The anger toward Benson stems from talks he apparently had with the San Antonio mayor about relocating the team to San Antonio.

The Saints are under contract to play at the Louisiana Superdome through 2010 but certain provisions allow them to opt out before a Nov. 29 deadline.

The Saints played their first game this season in Louisiana on Sunday. The game was played in LSU's stadium in Baton Rouge and the home team lost 21-6 to the Miami Dolphins.

On Sunday, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue met with Benson, Gov. Kathleen Blanco and other officials. Tagliabue said he wanted to keep the team in New Orleans.

Yeah, this is good. Throw some gasoline on the fire, too.

Saints owner attacks WWL-TV camera

WWLTV.com

Saints owner Tom Benson lunged at an Eyewitness News camera, ripping off a microphone and then got into a shouting match with a fan upon leaving Tiger Stadium Sunday.

According to Eyewitness Sports’ Lee Zurik, he and cameraman Mike Bland were in the press box with about five minutes to go when he saw Mr. Benson leaving the game.

Saints owner Tom Benson lunges at the Channel 4 camera, knocking it down and causing a microphone to fall off the equipment. Benson also got into a verbal argument with a fan.

Zurik and Bland went downstairs to get some video of Mr. Benson leaving and were “7 to 10 feet from him when Benson lunged and then swatted at the camera, ripping off a microphone that was attached.

Zurik said Benson then got into an argument with a fan and tried to lunge at him as well.
Looks like Benson's mind just snapped .....

Man this is completely classless, I'm embarrassed. Tom Benson has lost it. I think he lacks capacity to run and own an NFL franchise.

Did anybody else get an image of Don Zimmer flashing through their heads when they saw Benson go after the camera?

Boy, it just doesn't get any better, does it? This organization is in completely shambles from top to bottom.

Tiger Stadium attendance

Alamo Dome attendance - Buffalo

Paper Airplanes in flight at Tiger Stadium:
25,495

That is a rough estimate, but I'm sure it's not far off. I wish the clean up crew would count them.

The case for San Antonio was weak to begin with. But I don't think pointing out that 2500 more tickets sold at half the price is gonna be the deal breaker. Especially since San Antonio had two weeks to buy for a team that have no ties to, as opposed to Louisiana and surrounding areas having a month. Also, the falcons game was a omplete sellout. Add to that at 61,600, that leaves 17,400 empty seats in Baton rouge, as opposed to the 6300 empty in San Antonio. Like I said, the case was for San Antonio was already week from jump, but that argument doesn't make it any weaker.

... to be fair, anyone knows if something was said to Benson???

.. I seriously doubt that Benson just picked up a fight with a fan... I'm all for booing the performance on the field, but some fans/news types seem to get too personal...

Well I don't see this as a San Antonio vs. Louisiana thing. It's hard to compare a thriving economic city like San Antonio to a region that looks and feels like it just got hit by a nuclear bomb. That coupled with the fact that this organization has done nothing but snub their nose at the region and the State in general, 61,643 was a great accomplishment and I think the NFL saw that.

Exactly what I am saying. That's why I pointed out twice the case for San Antonio was already weak. There's no need for that comparison, unless the game was sold out. This is a Louisiana verses Tom Benson thing. Or a Saints fans verses Tom Benson thing if you will. Pointing out those attendance numbers verses San Antonio's means nothing. Pointing out that a hurricane ravaged area where pople still can't go home or don't have homes to go to put 61,000 some odd people in the stands is all the point that needs to be made. And it was well made. The boo birds came out again, but it's cause they care. I loved seeing all the signs about keeping our team. That's the point that should be made.

Has Texas begun funding the state corporate welfare program of the Saints ???? If you want to play the ticket price game , we can play the state subsidy game all day long .

The point was , that Benson is going to have a hard time selling the whole " I will go bankrupt if I do not move to San Antonio " concept with 61,000 butts in the seats .

It might stand more to reason that the general lack of interest is based upon the continual poor showing of your team . At some point in time there needs to be a comparison to attendance versus the poor quality of the team play . Arizona is the prime example , they have attendance under 40,000 all the time and that ownership seems to stay there and make things happen .

There has been no state subsidy this season. Weren't you told? And why would Texas give the Saints a subsidy when they don't give one to Dallas and Houston? Also, the governor has voiced he will pitch in money to help build a new stadium, as well as local investors, does that count? I still don't see how it's relevant to do a comparison. Saints, in New Orleans for 39 years. Saints in San Antonio for barely two weeks. I see what you're driving at.

He was having a hard time selling that wanyway. Noone believed him all last year when he cried broke but wouldn't open the books. We had 36 consec sellouts in the dome and he was crying broke, and noone believed him. This doesn't make it any harder on him. IMO. He is still the same greedy SOB.

I agree 150%, that's why our consec sell out streak ended after we went 4-8. There is something to be said for testing the limits of fan patience. What I do know is, Baton Rouge and everyone there had a great showing thst stands on its own merits. Comparing them to San Antonio's first game isn't really doing anything to enhance that, cause there are SO many factors going into it. We need another great showing at the Bears game next week, but we still have to be concerned about Nov. 29 and this force majeure clause. [/b]

Louisiana Superdome officials said Wednesday they will pay New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson only a fraction of a $15 million subsidy for 2005 because of home games lost to Hurricane Katrina.

The decision by the Louisiana Stadium & Exposition District, which operates the Superdome, promises to impose additional legal strain on an issue central to where the Saints will play in 2006 — and whether Benson decides to consider moving the team to San Antonio.

Already, the two sides have agreed that a disaster, or force majeure, clause could allow the Saints to terminate the lease by Nov. 28 — or, within 90 days after Katrina struck on Aug. 29.

Now, officials at the Superdome say that while they believe "the Saints need to be a part of our future," they believe Benson is due only a $3.3 million subsidy payment this year.

Officials said they calculated the prorated subsidy based on the team having played only two preseason games at the Superdome — eight fewer games than scheduled.

I read this article earlier and am getting the impression that Tags took Benson to the wood shed during the game and Benson exploded on the cameraman to vent .....

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/s....124569ae.html

1. Tagliabue also made it clear that league policy prohibits Saints owner Tom Benson from talking during the season about permanently relocating his team.

But Mayor Phil Hardberger indicated last week that talks are under way to bring the Saints to San Antonio, saying representatives of Benson hinted to city officials recently of Benson's desire for a new stadium.

"We have a very specific set of guidelines on that," Tagliabue said. "It's a policy we negotiated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors."

2. Tagliabue, who watched Sunday's game in Benson's suite, held a series of morning meetings with Benson, Blanco, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin and other officials.

And the kick in the Balls .... :nutkick:

3. Tagliabue said the league would provide the Saints with temporary financial assistance this season. He also called for a fresh look at the team's subsidy-rich contract with the state-owned Superdome, which he called "flawed."

saintswhodi 11-01-2005 09:36 AM

That's a great article. The second one. That would count as a swift kick to the balls. As far as your other statement about my subsidy comment, I knew they were getting a fraction. But to an owner demanding more for years, 3.3 million of what would have been 15 mil is nothing.
