CBS Sports faceoff: Time to give up on Brooks?

Is it time for the Saints to give up on Aaron Brooks?
Pete Prisco
I really like Aaron Brooks as a person. And I do think there is talent there. But it might be time for him to go somewhere else. His time seems to have passed with the Saints. He's one of the great teases of our time. He can look absolutely great for stretches, but then make some of the worst decisions a quarterback can make. A few years ago, he looked as if he was on the verge of becoming a dominant passer. But then he has these lapses that make you wonder what the heck he's doing, The Saints have tired of his inconsistent ways, so he's probably going to be playing elsewhere next year if they can find a capable replacement. Brooks is one of those quarterbacks who plays better when the pressure if off. Maybe a change of scenery would be a good thing for him.

Clark Judge
Yes. After leading the Saints to the 2000 playoffs he and the club have been spiraling downward, and it's time for both to move on. Brooks isn't responsible for this season's failures, but I would certainly include him when trying to explain why the Saints have gone 32-32 from 2001-2004. He's too careless with the football. He doesn't make enough big plays. And he makes too many big mistakes. Plus, I would never, ever, trust him in a big game. I'm just not sure who's going to show up: The guy who looked so promising in 2000 or the guy who was so erratic in 2004. He has 30 touchdown passes, 29 interceptions and a 10-16 record. I'm sorry, but that won't cut it. When I choose a quarterback I want to see improvement over time, and I want to see a leader the team can trust. I can't find either in Aaron Brooks.

Waiting....waiting...waiting

Guys I'm telling you.......I have a bad feeling if close the book on Aaron Brooks completely, we could possibly live to regret it. Hebert had some of his best seasons in Atlanta after we cut him loose. And of course we've cut loose several fairly successful backups, such as Bulger and Delhomme.

Mark my words, the Aaron Brooks story still has a few chapters left. Even if the last half of the book involves another team...

Yes, I know most of you want him gone, and honestly I can see why. 7-9, 9-7, 8-8, 8-8, 2-8.......always seeming to wind up just one game short of the playoffs. Yes I've defended Brooks but I'm not blind to reality. Do I want to see him leave? No I don't. Would I understand if the organization decided to move in a different direction? Yes, I would.

My advice is to sign one of those "backup QBs who could still be a starter" types.........similar to what Pittsburgh has in Charlie Batch. We have not had that since Delhomme left. This would do 2 things: (a) it would be a friendly reminder to Brooks that wins and production are directly tied to the ability to be a starter, and (b) in case the Aaron Brooks story results in the same twisted plot being rehashed from the last few years, then we have a solid QB to put in. At the same time, we have McPhearson waiting in the wings, just in case...

There have been and will continue to be quarterbacks who can't get the job done with one team and find themselves and the formula for success with another. The key for the team for whom the formula is losing is to cut and run and move on to the quarterback who will get it where it wants to be.

I don't doubt that AB has potential, skills and various other coveted characteristics of an NFL quarterback. The point is that after 6 years, we're still in neutral, sliding backwards down the hill. The Saints need things from the quarterback position that AB doesn't have. I will wish AB all the best in his new situation. I'll even barrack for him when his new team is not playing the Saints.

If you want to see excitement in the Saints camp, watch what happens when AMac gets the nod for starting his first game in Death Valley. I'll bet 10,000 tickets are sold just to see what happens. I think that fans are "boycotting" because (aside from Benson) there's nothing but the predictable. And that (losing with Brooks) won't get it done if you're going to try to sell your team in 2006.

Since this was a quarterback specific post, I kept my focus on the QB. I don't disagree with BonB that there are many other areas that beed improvement. But when you buy the highest quality ammo for your gun and it keeps misfiring, time to get another gun.

BoB you are the only guy I know that follows his post with another post. Can't you say it in one post or are you just trying to convince youself even more that Brooks is awesome. Look the sports writers have said it, the majority have polled it, Brooks is not the guy. Let him go to another team and fool them. We've been waiting for what 5,6 years now? Any way same ole song and dance with you.

See this is exactly it, you are backhandedly at it again. Let him go fool someone else? Yeah and let this team get some other knuckle to come in and screw up, and keep us wanting to succeed but can't. 38 years and it's all Brooks's fault.

Nice back to back posting again.
you are the ONLY one that speaks about 38 years and comparisons to Brooks. Why don't you live in the present? Does your tv play the games from the 70's or something?

Wanna know something funny. When Will Smith got those penalties back in one play Brooks said that it hurt the team. Will came back and stuff the QB and pretty much singlehandedly hold new england back. What does Brooks do after he makes a mistake? He goes three and out with inacccurate passes and poor decisions. Yet he speaks out about a guy that kicked as$
on sunday. This is your Hero? Brooks is a mediocre qb at best but a number 1 putz.

I've said it before and it's all too obvious now. BonB is really AB's alias.

Stop it AB. Give it up. You are playing in another colored uniform next year. It doesn't matter how much you disrespect your teammates anymore. It's all about you. We will not be distracted from the inevitable. You should accept your fate and show some class, finally.

Go study some film on your new team (hopefully the Jets) and get ready to play for your career next season. If you think you got your feelings hurt by this genteel crowd, the slathering, flesh hungry New York fans are primed for your sweetmeats. You'll get three games to show you can produce or you'll need a Garmin GPS to get to your next game in Honduras.
