Conwell's comments as team rep...

Mort was commenting on comments made last night by Ernie Conwell...

..said the Saints players want to play next year in San Antonio...

..one of the reasons being that they have kids and need to know where they are going to enroll them for the school year...

... poor Saints... that plane ride from San Antonio to Baton Rouge must be excruciating...

RE: Conwell

For as much money as he makes to play as shiiiiiiitttteeeeee as he does, we should make him play in freakin Anchorage.

Having just done a relatively casual canvassing of NO, Mr. Conwell should expect two key things to happen January 3, 2006 which will make his life a lot clearer relative to his family:

#1

Nearly all Orleans Parish private schools except for St. Paul's will be open and serving up a full schedule. This includes Newman, Trinity, Maghee's and most of the Catholic run schools. By August 2006, these schools will be operating at full steam. West Bank public schools fared better than East Bank, but I doubt that Mr. Conwell ever intended to place his children in them.

Jefferson Parish private schools will be open, including Country Day, St. Martin's and the Catholic charity schools. Most of the public schools are scheduled to open, and the fall looks good.

If Mr. Conwell bothered to pick up a phone or log into any of the schools' internet sites, he would know this much.

#2

His sorry stone handed missed blocking assignment butt will be cut, thereby saving him the incalculable dilemma of chosing among the schools.

Only Conwell can piss me off even when he isn't playing. I guess he didn't wipe all of the vagisil off his hands before he tried to pick up the phone to check on the status of the schools in NO. The sorry bastard probably dropped every phone in the house then gave up.

If I were a parent in Conwell's situation, injured or not, I would think and say the exact same things. No matter how much money people make, you want stability in your household. Although the plane trips from San Antonio to Baton Rouge are definately not bad, flying out every week to a different city gets tiresome.

The only thing keeping the Saints from resuming their normal lives in New Orleans is Tom Benson. There is plenty of infrastructure to support the team, their facility is pristine and the city is growing by about 500 people a day (and will increase by about 50,000 in the week before xmas). All they have to do is come home. Mr. Benson is purposely jerking the team around. If Conwell had done his homework, he'd realize that the problem isn't New Orleans, it's his owner.

cut him...

Sorry but I missed the part in Tobias's post where Conwell said New Orleans was the problem.

Xan is right. I pass through downtown New Orleans everyday. The traffic gets worse every five minutes. Schools are opening left and right. Conwell would have no problem at all finding a suitable location for his kids to go to school. Benson needs to job jerking the team and more importantly, the city around.

Not being able to commit to a school for his children is code for New Orleans is not functional.

What I don't get is why the players just don't say that they want to go back? Make a collective statement? Show leadership and commitment? Maybe this collection of individuals is spineless and weak, just like their play. One gains strength from commitment and focus, so why not step up to the plate?

... true that.. Conwell didn't say New Orleans is the problem... he did say the players want to stay in S.A. Where you enroll your kids in school is really not an issue when you are making at least $375,000 a year and received a couple million 2-3 years before as signing bonus. I know people who's home is in one city, but keep an apartment on the city they work, where they stay during the week, and go home on the weekends, and they don't make half as much. And they do it all year long, plus they don't get 4 straight months with their families after first week of January.

... same thing goes fot guys who work 12-14 hour days, again not making even half of what Ernie makes, or any of the Saints players for that matter, who live in the same house as their kids, but because their schedule, only get to see their kids awake Saturday and Sunday...

... if Ernie and the rest want to live in S.A., fine... Friday night you get on a chartered plane, fly fo what? 45 minutes? Then go back Sunday night after you lost another game, you are home for the weekdays!!!
..plus, when players get traded - or cut and they sign up with another team - in the middle of the school term, no one gives a damn about the kids. What should it be any different now? Ernie had no issues uprooting his kids from St. Louis when he signed with the Saints...

.. and one does get the feeling that the Saints players don't want to deal with the hassle of reconstruction. They're all comfy in S.A.

Euphoria 11-29-2005 03:22 PM

I seriously don't think its the majority of the team that wants to stay in SA. They play for the New Orleans Saints if they don't want to release them and get us comp pick and lets build in the draft.

G504 11-29-2005 07:16 PM

I thought I was the only one pissed off by his comments. I know most of the players aren't from New Orleans, and they didn't "ask" to play for the Saints, but if they care anything about their fans, they would push more for the team to stay in New Orleans and return as early as next year.
