Horn speaks on a top pick

Perhaps the dream scenario for the Saints would be to land the No. 1 pick and trade down one spot, where they could draft Leinart at No. 2.

Saints receiver Joe Horn expressed doubt the Saints would even pay the price for a top one or two pick.

"We probably won't draft them anyway, even if we had the first pick," Horn said, referring to Bush and Leinart, though he mistakenly referred to Bush as "Devin Bush" before being corrected by teammate DontÃÃâ€*’© Stallworth.

Trading down has certainly been a part of the Saints' history. Only twice have they selected a player in the top two picks, when they drafted tailback George Rogers No. 1 overall in 1981 and quarterback Archie Manning No. 2 overall in 1971.

It looks to me, in that article, like Loomis and the Aints are positioning themselves to have excuses and reasons not to take a great player in the draft...They always do this..."We're poor, its a gamble, we're not ready" its all BS...You watch they are gonna trade down and we will get nothing...Benson will spend next season locked in litigation with the league and the Saints play their last season in LA and mount a 1-15 record get the top Pick and use when they go to SA...Litigation works just ask Al Davis

I dunno. I actually support a trade down scenario.

Think of the possibilities if we were to have multiple first round picks... along with multiple second round picks... along with an NFL-sponsored free agent bonus for coming to N.O.... along with an increased (at least temporary) salary cap... along with a new QB... along (hopefully) with a new head coach... along (hopefully) with a new defensive coordinator....

It's an exciting scenario.

I agree with a trade down scenario. We need many picks to build an offensive line and work on that damn D. Getting Bush and then bolstering that line in front works for me but if not Bush then trade the pick...

Other teams will pay more for the opportunity to draft Bush, than they would Leinart. If we can't trade for Rivers, then we have to address the position somehow.

we can pass on matt. we can get the kid from bowling green. well that will be if he comes out. he may stay for his senior year. but the kid has 60% completion all three years. threw 26 td's and 7 int's this year. well if he comes out i would like to see us get him. maybe pick up a veteran for a year while he learns. if we can't get bush man i don't want to take a chance on matt. i could be wrong because i am not an nfl scout but i did stay at a holiday inn last night

I saved money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.

I'm also for trading down. We could get plenty of solid players with the extra pick or two we could obtain. I like the fact that we'll have all the cards on the table... hopefully we won't blow it.

Jacobs is a very accurate quarterback with a strong arm and plenty mobility. I wouldn't mind him in the second either spk. That 26 to 7 td to int ratio was a bad year for him. He also missed a lot of games this season and he still put up those numbers. Look at his track record, he's going to be a solid pro.

On the side note if anyone is interested, Brady Quinn is returning for his senior season. I wouldn't be surprised with another season under Weiss, he'll become a top 5 pick next year.

saintswhodi 12-30-2005 08:51 AM

Brady Quinn will be a top 5 pick, so is Matt Leinart. Unless someone offers us the world, no thanks on a trade down.

BlackandBlue 12-30-2005 09:22 AM

#1 pick, I'd trade down, but not outside the top 5 (see my Jets scenario from a previous thread).
Taking Quinn with the 4th overall pick would not hurt my feelings at all. I like the guidance he's received over the past year ;)

#2 pick, take Leinart

saintswhodi 12-30-2005 09:50 AM

Well, Quinn isn't coming out this year, so it's Leinart or bust. #1 pick consider a trade down to #2 or #3. #2 pick, take Leinart.

Euphoria 12-30-2005 10:55 AM

I still don't see an improvement with Leinart... if you can get bush you get him! Concentrate building a line and D. After all if you want to rebuild this team and drafting a QB is basically what it means then lets build this team from the group up not up down. Build that line and D, specail teams will improve and then go after a couple of gems to fill in and grow. If you can't protect Leinart he's nothing.

D_it_up 12-30-2005 11:13 AM

And if you can't open holes for Bush, he's nothing as well. He'll have to off tackle every play just to try and utilize he's speed to get in the open. If the O-line isn't good enough to protect Leinart, then they aren't good enough for Bush to break free. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. I would rather have someone like Leinart who is possibly one of the most polished, intelligent QB's I've ever seen coming out of college.

saintswhodi 12-30-2005 11:33 AM

You have to realize Euphoria is one of Brooks' biggest allies here. He doesn't want Leinart here cause then it truly means the Brooks era is over. So any option looks better, Bush when we already have Deuce and can't trade him, trading down, whatever. Whatever helps keep Brooks here. Once you realize that, you will realize it's fruitless to argue this with him.

lynwood 12-30-2005 12:07 PM

I say take either one. They will both help the team. If we don't get either one and we have a #1 or #2 pick i'd like to hear the excuses.

Damn, did he say he wasn't coming out? Ehh, with some of the teams at the top of this draft, I can't say as I blame him.

D_it_up 12-30-2005 02:49 PM

I didn't realize Euphoria was a Brooks supporter. Guess I have been gone too long. I didn't think any of those people existed anymore.

BlackandBlue 12-30-2005 04:57 PM

Meant to post this earlier, you know you're poking the stick right now. Euph has been very civil, so let's knock the backhanded comments out, as it relates to a particular subject.

i agree, let's get leinart. it's time for someone else to take over the team.

lynwood 12-30-2005 07:58 PM

Does anyone know if a team has two first round picks for the draft?

Lets hope not lynnwood. we blew that senerio with john sully remember. besides we can not afford two number ones tommy boy is going to be broke keeping bentley. We can only hope the saints will pick a lot day 1 picks this year and next year to milk katrina for some good.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

spkb25 12-31-2005 09:27 AM

dude i don't want matt. i am with euph. i never noticed and i am not saying that i am right but i have never noticed euph being a supporter of brooks. i don't want matt either does that mean i like brooks. why don't we go after rivers if he is available or kitna and draft a qb to take over for kitna not rivers.. maybe the kid from bowling green if he comes out. i haven't heard that he is though. i am sorry i just don't like leinart. he scares me. if we get him man i hope i am wrong. this is where i see bush as being so much safer. the kid could be a bust but i just don't see it. the way he hits the hole is amazing. i have never seen a burst like that. d it up i disagree that a team can't be a better run blocking team thn pass blocking team. now i am not saying our line is that but just because your team may be week at pass blocking doesn't mean that they can't block on run plays. run blocking is a lot less complicated then pass blocking. well in my opinion.

Regardless, Euph's comments weren't without merit.
