[quote="D_it_up2"]Here's the thing that strikes me as the most interesting about this guy:
[quote]defensive coordinator at Georgia in 2000 and LSU in 2001. The Tigers won the SEC championship game and the Sugar Bowl that season under second-year head coach Nick Saban. Quote:

I don't know about Gibbs. LSU's defense wasn't that great under him. They gave up lots of yards and points. In fact, didn't Saban fire him?

In 2001, LSU gave up 22.3 points per game. That dosen't include the shoot out against Illinois in the Sugar Bowl. In 2000 they gave up 20.1 points per game. No to Gibbs.

you can't use LSU's points given up per game during those years as an accurate measure of how good a defensive coordinator gibbs is... that is ridiculous. you are comparing the college level to the pro level and it doesn't match up... for starters, that LSU defense had guys who never will play a down in the league who were starter, so yeah, they're going to give up a lot of yds/points... you have to look at what he got out of his players and how he did a great job at coaching them... look at james, faulk, etc. he did a great job utilizing them and i feel if we can give him some talent at this level, he'll do the same thing, as far as utilizing the talent the best way possible... that year LSU blitzed nearly every down and applied more than adequate pressure on the quarterback.... he had great de's and suitable dl's, which allowed him to coach up his lb's and press with his cb's... the man can definitely coach a defense....

The college game is more about coaching than physical ability, I don't care what anyone says. Besides, it's not like LSU had bad recruiting classes. Even when the team had back-to-back losing seasons under Dinardo their recruiting was still good enough to build a solid defense, which Gibbs didn't give them. |
