Payton's Notes Stole My Attention (Dallas Morning News)
Playoffs? Sorry, Payton's notes stole my attention
Can't believe new Saints coach needed crib sheet to speak his mind Chip Brown, Dallas Morning News 1-21-06 I don't know about you, but I was absolutely riveted by former Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton's introductory news conference as coach of the New Orleans Saints. Maybe it was the way he kept looking down at his written statement to remember his lines like a seventh-grader with stage fright in his school play. Nothing says fiery leader of an embattled NFL team in desperate need of fiery leadership like reading from cue cards. Payton brought the crowd to a Mardi Gras-like frenzy with this line: "I'm not one for fancy speeches and motivational gimmicks. I believe in the process." Now that's gangsta. Payton definitely brings a hip-hop vibe to a town that New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin hopes will always be a "chocolate" city. Just how long it takes Payton to work his Willy Wonka magic in New Orleans remains to be seen. Payton leads a parade of esteemed assistant coaches who have been hired as NFL head coaches. Detroit hired Rod Marinelli. St. Louis got Scott Linehan. The Green Bay Packers landed Mike McCarthy, and the Jets have Eric Mangini. If those names don't put chills down your spine, then you've probably been too busy watching Willis from Diff'rent Strokes on Skating With Celebrities like me. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...k.2558919.html 8) |
