Interesting story on Vince Young

At work today I was listening to ESPN radio. Mel Kiper was on talking about the draft and I heard him say that Vince Young will not be throwing at the combine. Did anyone else hear about this? For me, this is a huge red flag. Everyone knows the guy is athletic and can run, the scouts want to see him throw. Is this common for quarterbacks not to throw at the combine? Does anyone else find this frightening that he is choosing not to throw? I haven't heard anything about Leinart not wanting to throw at the combine. If you want to be a quarterback it would make sense to throw for scouts, being that it will be your job. I like both guys but have been leaning towards Leinart for a while now, this only strengthens my opinion that Leinart is the one. Leinart has to be our guy, I don't want our future qb to be a guy who doesn't have the confidence to throw for some scouts.

Not throwing? Does not make sence unless he wants to be a reciever or wants to secure a slip down to Tenn.

I don't know if anyone else watched that Capital One senior bowl skills challenge thing on ESPN last week, but they had a contest to see who could throw a ball the farthest. Each guy had three throws. Vince Young was the only guy who threw two of his three balls out of bounds (out of bounds was in between the hashes, and they were college hashes). He finished with the second longest throw of the day. Maybe he's afraid of looking bad in the combine. As of right now, this guy can just ride his Rose Bowl performance into into a top three pick.

P.s.- I believe Brodie Croyle won the competition.

Top picks sometimes don't throw at the Combines but instead have private sessions with high draft pick teams. It's not completely unheard of, but not a good sign.

LivnaLieTimay 02-16-2006 04:53 PM

I forgot to mention he isn't going to run or lift weights either... what exactly is he going to do at the combine? I know a lot of people have been waiting for the combine to get some answers on some of our potential picks, clearly we won't get any info on vince young. Although his decision to not throw, run or lift weights answers all my questions. Thanks BJ for letting me know that is isn't "completely unheard of." You newark folks know your stuff, hahaha... I graduated from UDel

Euphoria 02-16-2006 04:56 PM

I heard he wasn't going to run, everyone knows he can run so only going to throw.

BJSim 02-16-2006 04:59 PM

I wouldn't be completely surprised if Leinart now follows suit and doesn't throw. But to not do any of the major things is just too questionable. Young is really relying on his Championship win and possitive spin to help, but it won't last forever.

Timay, heh small world... Go Blue Hens!

Here's the beginning part of the article...

"The agent for Vince Young, who said last month that the former Texas quarterback would throw for teams at the NFL combine next week, now says Young may not throw and instead may only interview with teams."

Vince's camp has been moving toward this decision. This was an article from monday, feb 13th. Now Kiper is saying he isn't going to throw. It may change, but as of today, Kiper is saying he won't throw. I'll keep looking for more articles to find out his definate decision.

Hey BJ, I say we fill our lb needs with Mondoe Davis, hahaha. That guy was a monster for us, he's on the jets injured reserve, I say snatch him from the jets and bring him into camp.

Euphoria 02-16-2006 05:14 PM

Hell I don't blame him, I don't blame anyone... if you got a shot at going in the top 3, I wouldn't lift a damn finger, why risk "INJURY", lol. Sit back and work out the money thing... cha ching

As for Vince Young, you took the words right out of my mouth. He looked alot like AB to me. Oh yeah, there was a guy who did not compete in that competition. His name: Matt Leinart. In his ESPN interview, they asked him about this & his arm strength (or lack there of). Leinart's answer: "I think my arm's stronger now than ever, but there will always be doubters. I guess we'll just have to see what happens at the combines." Now that sounds like he'll be competing in the combines to me, so let's not put his name in that mix just yet.

BJSim 02-16-2006 05:45 PM

Gandhi, not trying to put a negative spin on him (Leinart), just saying I wouldn't be surprised. Hell his biggest competition isn't going to, why should he?

spkb25 02-16-2006 07:49 PM

isn't throwing. is he throwing for teams in private workouts or does his performance in the rose bowl speak for itslef. sounds to me like he doesn't want to risk (it isn't inuries ladies) the money on the fact that he is over rated. i don't like it. never liked him anyway

pakowitz 02-17-2006 09:48 AM

none of the top players do anything at the combine... i wouldnt be surprised if bush doesnt run or leinert doesnt throw..none of the top players ever do..... everyone knows anyway that they will be top 5 guys so y put yourself in a position against other guys when u can have a private session with all the NFL teams there and they can be there just for you...its very common... you didnt see eli or roethlisberger or rivers throw at the combine....

jergensl 02-18-2006 05:18 PM

leinart and young should skip the combine. it would be plain stupid for them to go. they cannot possibly move up much in the draft, but they could fall way back with a bad performance. the combine is really for fringe players to up their stock. most of the elite talent will hold personal tryouts where they can control what goes on.

I wouldn't throw in front of the NFL scouts either if I had a delivery like that!

Yeah....he would positively hurt his draft status if he threw at the combine...
Smart move....

LivnaLieTimay 02-21-2006 12:00 PM

I said I would post it when it became official, Vince won't throw or run, only interview with teams. Here's a little piece from the article...

"Next up is the NFL Scouting Combine at the RCA Dome later this week, but Young isn't planning to throw or run there."

Well I read somewhere Leinart was not going to throw either. But I guess I shouldn't state that without quoting the artical but anyway.

I heard an interview today with the Titans GM Floyd Reese on the Colin Cowart ESPN radio show. He stated that it didn't really matter to the top two or three teams picking, since they will get private workouts and multiple other opportunities to see, interview, poke, and prod the top 10 guys or so anyway over the next couple of months. He said that it most likely would hurt teams later in the 1st round if they decided they wanted to move up a grab a top pick.
