The Associated Press reports the NFL has set the salary cap for the 2006 season at $94.5 million. League owners will meet in New York on Thursday, March 2, in an attempt to work out a new collective bargaining agreement. A new CBA could add anywhere from $10 million to $15 million to the salary cap. Teams also have an additional six hours to terminate contracts and request waivers on players. The original deadline was set for 4 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 2, but has now been pushed back to 10 p.m.

Well, it looks like there's not going to even be talks about a new CBA. I think the owners are going to try to pressure the NFLPA into renegotiating by showing what happens without one. The players will be complaining to the union more and more as quality high paid players are cut.

yeah, that lesson is how to pull a hockey players' association beat down. I'll bet the salary cap is lowered just to show who's boss. Those players make entirely too much money for what they do (or don't do).

The Saints would be screwed without a salary cap. Unfair advantages for big spending teams like the Cowboys and Giants. We'd be the new KC Royals of football.

I am not so sure they make entirely too much, they do make alot though, I think rookies make too much for darn sure...I don't think the players union should be getting 60% or more of the revenues of the NFL, this is and always should be the owners league....they put up the money, they take the risk, they make it happen...

If it wasn't for the owners and the league guys like Jake Plummer and Ben Roethlisberger would just look like homeless guys looking for some Maddog 20/20 or some Thunderbird...Ab would just be the Schizo guy with a crazy smile wiping your windshield with a baby diaper on the corner of Canal and Bourbon...Oh wait that will be happening on Friday morning...

Good point jrm, these players are playing a game for a living. They aren't having to wait tables or sit in a cubicle all day, they get to play football. And they get payed 1000X what a normal person gets paid. These guys don't deserve any more money. The owners should be the ones deciding. Maybe it's just because I hate unions, but I am playing the NFLPA for this right now.

Two guys locally that I grew up with thier younger brothers were drafted and Played. Stores played special teams for the Jags and Benfatti Played for the jets. Both had short Careers due to injury, and I have to say they made a nice chunck a change in thier early twenties and alot more than most, but if it wasn't managed right they would be left with just nagging pains. The average rookie does make that much by comparison, and the average rookie does not last long in the NFL and usually has to live out the rest of thier life dealing with the work related injury.

The top end is where I have the issue. Yes these guys are superstars, but when you get into the realm of money that's being floated I can't be sustained, not in a small market.

..health insurance...disability insurance...

..with the money they make in one year, which is equivalent to 10 times the average salary in the U.S., they sure can afford the 1,500 a month for independent insurance...

..electricians get electrocuted, police get shot, firefighters get burnt... it's called life.. not because you are on TV playing a game it means that you are above life...

It'll take quite a while for anyone to make 30mil a year. If there is a year with no salary cap, there's already a rule in place that you can't get a raise of more than 30% from the prior year. Do the math, you're talking years before anyone is going to get near 30mil a year.

SH!T happens I know, but there is no one paying to watch and electrician wire a building if you know what I mean. Not to many people would be willing to put up with the regiment day in and day out for a 60K salery. Not anymore. People like us are the ones that keep the owners making the cash so. If you stop watching and spending your dollars then, you can mount your own protest.

Seriously I was pointing out there is a great disparity in the salaries between the top end and the average player strait out of collecge, so in terms of the CBA for the low end (grunts lets call them) this is important.

And I am not knocking the other jobs you mentioned as I too work for a living.

Players and owners have a symbiotic relationship. The NFL as a league cannot exist without either. There's a multibillion dollar pot because of both. And the pot keeps getting bigger.

That given, the NFLPA's demands are outrageous. AFAICT they want the owners to throw in all the local money into the league pot (Total Gross Revenues) as opposed to the currently Defined Gross Revenues, which is currently licensing, ticket, and TV money. This is the revenue sharing piece.

Then on top of that, the players want a bigger slice of that bigger pie.

Now one or the other (or maybe a bit of both) may be reasonable. But to ask for both isn't. That's why the owners are balking.

The revenue piece is the big ticket item here. As more and more of the super rich owners leverage revenue outside of the DGR, you'll see more and more of a disparity between the haves and the have nots. In the current system players can go pretty much anywhere and have a shot at both excellent money and at least the possibility of winning. It isn't baseball.

So I figure that Upshaw will ease off of the 60 percent figure if the owners agree to something close to the TGR. Maybe something along the lines of 100 percent of the current DFR along with 75% of the rest of the revenue going into the league pot. Then agree to take 57% of that and call it a day.

This move will hurt big owners and help smaller markets and the players overall.

I would add something else. I'd bet that small, cheap owners would take the extra money and stick it in their pocket. So players should also insist that a certain percentage of the shared revenue go strictly to player salaries and football related operations. In short there should not only be a upper salary cap, but a lower one too. So you won't have teams like the Cards and the Vikes $25 million below the cap.

For this to work, both players and owners are going to have to give up something. The NFL's share and share alike CBA has made it be far the most powerful sports league. The TV contracts add up to something like $3.7 billion (yes with a B) a year. Everyone in the NFL is virtually a lottery winner.

So here's hoping that the knuckleheads on both sides don't screw this up.
