The rumor I got off the other Saints board is that the Saints offered 5 years 40 million dollars for Brees' services. They said it was heard on a San Diego radio station. :awe: I know we have a couple of Cali people on our boards I wonder if they could confirm this.

I like the possibility of signing Brees! Near the end of the season (before brees got hurt) I was calling for the saints to try and trade for Rivers, so I am excited by the possibility of signing drew (besides Payton seems to have good luck with DREWS). I can still see us drafting Leinart or trading down and maybe picking up Cutler. I would love to see the Saints try to sign a quality linebacker (arrington or witherspoon) and maybe Allen at CB. This is starting to be a very exciting offseason. GEAUX SAINTS!! PS. COME ON GATORS BEAT THOSE TIGERS!!

looks like that would be in line with what he is looking for. i heard he was looking for what he got last year as the fran. player. which i think was like 8mil

further to that point papz
The deal will probably average just under $8 million per year for six years. The transition tag salary, which is the average of the top 10 quarterbacks, is $8.3 million. And if any team doesn't believe the salary will go this high probably needs to forget about Brees as an option. I would not be surprised if the team that wins his services will put a six-year deal together for $46.8 million with $15 to $16 million guaranteed. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9287875 |

I've been away for a while, and apparently we're interested in Brees? I'm kinda upset about this occurrence. The guy had a nasty injury to end his season. He's also going to be one of the highest paid FAs this year. So why are we interested in doling out too much money for a guy coming off a season-ending shoulder injury? That just doesn't make sense to me, especially with all of these people here talking about how we have so many holes to fill...

Don't know if this has been posted or not, but here goes:

Some scary research
I liked the idea of signing Drew Brees when I began fantasy thinking right after the end of the season. Lately, with all the poison-pill talking from Brees and the Chargers - I am no longer sure.
Seems from what research I can find, Brees wants a lot of guaranteed money this year, but may not even be able to throw a single pass this year. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports...1chargers.html Quote:
The Chargers organization alleges that they have that kind of money in his deal, if he take at least 75% of the snaps this year. Quote:
With the offer by the Chargers made public, we get the Brees camp throwing the "liar, liar" defense all over the place. Quote:
I'm not saying I totally sold against the idea of Drew Brees, but I am worried..... |
RE: Some scary research
I can't wait to put on NFL Network and see: "Breaking news: New Orleans Saints sign QB Drew Bress to x year contract." This would make me happy, and what would make me even happier is to hear: "There is a trade with the 2nd pick in the draft. The New Orleans Saints trade their pick to the Jets for their 1st 2nd and 4th round pick.............................With the 4th pick in the draft the New Orleans Saints select Offensive Tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson University Virginia." This guy is a MONSTER! The second coming of Roaf only better. This would finally solidify our O-line. I know we have some defensive issues and A.J. Hawk would be a great pick. I would not be dissapointed with that pick either but Ferguson is just way too good to pass on.
Next I would love to hear: "With the 34th pick in the 2006 draft the New Orleans Saints select Bobby Carpenter OLB Ohio State" He worked alongside Hawk and was overshadowed by Hawks star power. To wrap this up quickly next pick in the 2nd round I would like Joseph Addai WHY? because he is an LSU back and would be a viable back-up to an oft injured Deuce. next pick which is in the third I want Brodie Croyle QB Alabama. He will never be a great starter but he is smart and like Addai is a viable back-up. I know that I have alot of offense on my first day of draft wants, but I am hoping that the Saints get some good Defensive Free Agents. I for one like LaVar which will open up some more draft picks for someone like a DT or a CB. That is ALL |
The Fins are taking a shot at him but, they dont have much wiggle room in the cap from what I heard, but that may have improved with the new CBA

going along the line of what Papz said about signing Brees and drafting Leinart I found an article that suggests a similar opinion. I know PFT is all rumors but it is something to consider that is along the lines of what Papz has been saying about signing Brees to a shorter deal and having Leinart watch and learn...
"BREES DOESN'T WANT TO JOIN SAINTS The scuttlebutt in league circles is that quarterback Drew Brees doesn't want to join the Saints, but that he's talking to them in the hopes of driving up the offer made by his preferred destination, the Miami Dolphins. Word is that the Saints envision Brees as a short-term starter who would handle the job while Matt Leinart or Vince Young or Jay Cutler get ready to play. As a result, the Saints are offering the kind of deal that Kurt Warner signed two seasons ago in New York as Eli Manning got ready to play -- a two-year contract that is essentially a one-year deal. The problem is that the Fins don't want to pay the same kind of money in 2006 that the Saints are willing to invest. Instead, Miami is giving Brees the opportunity to earn big money over the long term. So the Saints are banking on Brees' shoulder being fully healed in time for the 2006 season, and the Dolphins are being more cautious. In the end, Brees' best play might be to take less money in the short term with an organization that is far better equipped to succeed over the long haul." http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm |
They make some valid points in that article...I dont see the saints doint a NT Giants deal though...thats expensive..I genuinly think that Payton wants Brees becasue he sees a younger Bledsoe in him...Look what he did with Bledsoe this year, they didn't make the playoffs but they played well and I think were a better team than the Redskins despite losing to them...
