Some scary research
I liked the idea of signing Drew Brees when I began fantasy thinking right after the end of the season. Lately, with all the poison-pill talking from Brees and the Chargers - I am no longer sure.
Seems from what research I can find, Brees wants a lot of guaranteed money this year, but may not even be able to throw a single pass this year.

Quote:
With the sides some $6 million apart on guaranteed money for the first year of what is essentially a one-year contract with an option for five additional years, the Chargers reiterated their concern over Brees' surgically repaired right shoulder.
Brees acknowledged yesterday the “worst-case scenario is that he does not throw a pass this season, but he repeated his belief he will play in 2006 and said he expects to be ready in time for the opener. But he also wants more of a guarantee from the Chargers.

So essentially, while acknowledging there is no "guarantee" that he will play at all this year, he wants guaranteed money in the 8-10 million range.
The Chargers organization alleges that they have that kind of money in his deal, if he take at least 75% of the snaps this year.
Quote:
While the potential total value of the Chargers' contract proposal is $50 million over the six years – in line with other top quarterbacks – the only guaranteed money is $2 million, well below what stars such as Tom Brady and Carson Palmer have received in recent deals.
Brees could earn an additional $8 million the first year of the contract should he play 75 percent of the team's snaps.

The offer goes on to make the deal even more sweet, but I'll let you read that if you're interested.
With the offer by the Chargers made public, we get the Brees camp throwing the "liar, liar" defense all over the place.
Quote:
Said Brees: “Tom (his agent) has no reason to lie. I told Tom from the beginning of negotiations I want to do everything we can to be in San Diego. We attempted to make that happen. And the numbers are so much more elsewhere than they are with the Chargers I'd be stupid not to take an offer elsewhere.

I start to feel like this might be a typical Saints signing - overpaying for a guy whose basically a problem in the locker room, with an over-inflated opinion of himself and his play, who insists he's worth more than he is this year.
I'm not saying I totally sold against the idea of Drew Brees, but I am worried.....
