Johnson is a favorite of coach Bill Parcells and was scheduled to make only $1.5 million this season. However, he was seeking an extension and a raise, and the Cowboys apparently wanted to keep their options open -- perhaps especially because T.O. is available.

"Keyshawn is one of a handful of the top competitors that have ever played for the Dallas Cowboys," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. "The more he was a part of our team, the more we appreciated him as a player."

The tempestuous but talented Owens was released a few hours earlier Tuesday by Philadelphia, making him a free agent. Jones has never shied from big-name players regardless of the cost or risk, and the Eagles have long been wary about their division rivals trying to land Owens since they decided to get rid of him.

The question for Dallas is whether Owens' pass-catching skills are worth whatever trouble he may cause, especially since the Cowboys are coming off a 9-7 season and likely need more than a big-time receiver to reach the Super Bowl. Owens also might be a tough sell to fans still angry at him for having celebrated touchdowns against Dallas on the midfield logo at Texas Stadium.

Because of their playing styles and personalities, Owens and Johnson would be a bad fit as teammates. If the Cowboys end up without either, they'd need someone like them: A big, sure-handed receiver who can catch passes over the middle. Terry Glenn is the only other accomplished receiver on the Cowboys' roster and he's more of the small, speedy type.

Johnson turns 34 this summer and is coming off a solid season. He led the team in receptions with 71, and had 839 yards and six touchdowns.

He still could be re-signed, possibly even at the higher price he was seeking.

Another intriguing replacement Dallas might consider is Buffalo's Eric Moulds, who had some of his best years playing for Cowboys quarterback Drew Bledsoe when they were teammates from 2002-04. Moulds' personal adviser told The Associated Press on Monday that the receiver has asked to be traded or released. He has two years left on a contract that's scheduled to pay him more than $7.1 million next season.

Dallas already has missed out on Antwaan Randle El, who signed with Washington, and Brandon Lloyd, who also joined the Redskins in a trade from San Francisco. The 49ers have signed Antonio Bryant, but the Cowboys were unlikely to be interested in someone they gave up on a few years ago after he threw a sweaty jersey at Parcells.

Like Owens now, Johnson came marked "handle with care" when Dallas acquired him from Tampa Bay in a trade for Joey Galloway.

Public perception of Johnson was low because he'd been deactivated the last four games of the 2003 season following a spat with Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden, adding to a list of incidents that had him mockingly branded "Me-shawn."

Over two years with the Cowboys, Johnson made only ripples, not waves, and was a solid producer. His 25 receptions on third downs last season were eighth-best in the NFL and several of his touchdowns were game-winners. He never missed a game despite various injuries.

Johnson was the No. 1 overall pick by the New York Jets in 1996. He spent four seasons there and four more in Tampa Bay. After 10 seasons, he's 20th on the career receptions list with 744. He's caught a pass in all 151 games of his career, four behind Indianapolis' Marvin Harrison for the longest active streak.

Obviously Me-shawn isn't what he used to be, but I know one thing he has that this team could use: GOOD hands. We don't have a true possession receiver, and I believe that if you looked up possession receiver in the dictionary, you'd probably find a picture of Keyshawn. I would like to get Keyshawn at a reasonable price. Hell, Joe Horn, Keyshawn, Stallworth, and then Henderson on 4-WR packages? Sounds good to me.

Deuce you beat me to this one. I think Keyshawn is still a GREAT possession reciever, and would really get Brees pumped. Also, this is viable because We have a Dallas connection and we seem to have already used that to get Fujita.

No no no!!! We just got a leader and good lockerroom presence in Brees.... you want to ruin that with a guy like Keyshawn "Throw Me the Damn Ball" Johnson? I'm for picking up a good WR in FA, but not him. It was Parcell's force of will that kept Johnson's mouth shut in Dallas. No offense to Payten, but until he proves otherwise... He's no Parcells. I still say resign Az-Hakim and look for other positions first (OL & LB).

We've all seen what a coach like Parcells can do to Keyshawn's attitude. While on the Cowboys, Keyshawn never really made news for being arrogant and outspoken in a negative manner. And Payton has learned his coaching from Parcells, so I think I'd be comfortable with Keyshawn under Payton.

This sounds like a broken record, but I'll say it....if we can get him for cheap, I say ok...otherwise pass. He has an inflated sense of self worth, so likewise he'll think he's worth megabucks still. He's a much better choice for a team with an established coach, like Denver. He'd try to run over Sean Payton.

D, oddly, no I'm not on crack. I'd rather have Az-Hakim than Johnson. I don't like Johnson. Make it as personal as you want, he's not what this club needs.We've got a #1 and #2 WR, we need a #3 or #4. You bring Johnson in, then who do you sit? Stallworth, who showed flashes last year of taking that next step. Horn, who is still your best WR even when injured and still has great hands. If you don't play Keyshawn every down he becomes a baby. He yelled at Parcells and Bledsoe at different times last year for it. You want that here? No thank you.

Oh, I'm not advocating a signing of Keyshawn, either. I was just shocked to see that someone wanted to keep Az-Hakim...lol. I'd prefer Moulds over Headcase Keyshawn. Devery Henderson could be ready to step up to the #3 receiver, but he's got to really impress in camp to prove he deserves it. If not, then someone will need to be picked up, and I pray Hakim isn't the answer.

No Keyshawn for me, things are looking better for the Saints and he would screw that up, no thanks.

Az-Hakim is a fine #3 or #4 WR... nothing more. And he did OK (I almost said well) when he was pressed into the #2 slot because of Horn's injuries.

i think we need to start looking for another young wide out because joe isn't getting any younger but i expect him to be back next year. i think hedny started to do a little something last year and should be a nice number three next year. stallworth finally stayed healthy and showed some things. any word on jerome pathon. i liked the guy anyway. let me know what ya think of him as a number three or 4

Good point tigger. At this point in Horn's career, injuries have become an obvious issue for him. We could always use another guy with sure hands.

Actually Kelley, that has nothing to do with T.O. So far, no coach has been able to corale Owens since he's been in the NFL. No team he's been with has been able to control him. I'm friends with D. Henderson Uncle, I met the two of them at Lowe's near where I live and DH said he's excited about this season and is ready to pickup his game, we shall see, I thought also he was showing us a little about what he's capable of doing, which is a lot if you ask me.

I'm not a fan of Keyshawn Johnson. I'd rather the Saints stay away from him.

Actually, TO isn't as undisciplined as you might think. What most confuse with him is his off-field antics and interviews reference his on-field ability. No doubt, he is one of the most dominating WR's in the game today and can play with anyone throwing to him. The guy makes bad teams better and decent teams, contenders. The main issue with him arose when he signed on with Drew Rosen-Mouth, who made promises about more money that he couldn't keep and had the guy sit out of training camp. I for one would LOVE to sign him on a 1 or 2 year deal and give Drew another target.

Imagine: Brees throwing, with Deuce in the back, and TO, Horn, Stallworth as your 1,2, & 3. Your O line issues would not be anywhere near as significant if you could throw that at a Defense!
THEN, use the draft to pick up some BADLY needed middle help (NT, MLB) and maybe a project CB.

lielung... you and I are both in the area that heard ALL the T.O. stories. He's not worth the distraction. You just signed the "face" of the team with Brees, do you want the new "face" to be T.O.? Because that's what will happen. All the news reports will be ABOUT HIM, all the questions to other players will be ABOUT HIM. Phily had multiple Pro-Bowl players and still they got bombarded with T.O. questions. NO T.O.!

BJSim... You solve that problem with a 1 or 2 yr deal. That way he KNOWS he's not a permanent franchise solution. Just pay him and he'll play. Its about winning games and being a contender, not winning some sort of imagined PR power struggle. The guy's a proven player and no denying it, one of the best in the game.

WR is NOT enough of a concern to bring in the trouble he'd cause. If we didn't have Horn, Stallworth, and Henderson then maybe. But we've got a good #1 & #2 tandem.
