Saints | Stokes planned to visit
Wed, 22 Mar 2006 05:33:44 -0800

Mike O'Hara, of the Detroit News, reports OT Barry Stokes planned to visit with the New Orleans Saints, but instead he agreed to a three-year contract with the Detroit Lions, according to his agent Dr. D.S. Ping.
Unlike years past, the FO at least recognizes an area of need. Now we need to make some signings.

Sure we reconize the needs... getting somebody is another story.... I think we need a center type.

Our best bet now for center is to draft Mangold.

You can't start both Mangold and Dbrick and expect the line to protect Brees.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. The Raiders tried this a couple of years ago with Robert Gallery at LT and Jake Grove at C. I would compare these two very similarly to D'Brick and Mangold. It turned out bad for the Raiders in their rookie years. Gallery got moved to RT and Grove sat the pine if I remember correctly. These are the two toughest positions to play on the line and starting two rookies is a recipe for disaster.

Mangold is still better than any of the leftovers available at the center position.

Sorry, you must be smoking bad stuff, Bob. Rookies going up against seasoned vets? D'brick will be fine but will still take a year to really jell. Mangold playing center will need to make all the line calls plus handle some of the badest dudes in the NFL ie DTs. Don't think that our guards weren't helped by the play of Bentley too. If I going against this line.... I'm licking my chops. We need to protect Brees better.

Here's the take on Mangold:

1. NICK MANGOLD, OHIO STATE

Nick Mangold, left, and A.J. Hawk might be the first players drafted at their respective positions.
Positives: Good size (6-foot-3 and 300 pounds) and upper-body strength. ... Shows considerable toughness and will battle to the whistle. ... Possesses intelligence to recognize stunts and blitzes, and consistently makes proper line calls. ... Takes good angles on blocks. ... Does a nice job of pulling and trapping. ... Sets up quickly in pass protection, which gives him an edge vs. speedy inside rushers.

Negatives: Must enhance lower-body strength to deal with massive, bull-rushing tackles. ... Needs to work on change-of-direction skills to become better able to block defenders on the move

P.S.- I only puff the finest!!!!!

Didn't Bentley, who just so happened to have the same resume & came from the same school, do a bang up job his rookie season?

Besides, would you rather sign Faine "the crippled one."

Bentley was move to guard......And was a Probowler at that. Fontenont was center if I recall. Only until the Coaches thought that Fontenot was too old did they let him go and let Bentley take over. At that point he had two years of seasoning and tutilage.

Why not? You just said in another thread that it's best to draft tackles in the first round. Gallery, Gross, Boselli, and others have proven that. And even though the game is faster, it's still football. Mangold is the highest ranked OC to come out in a long time. There have been only been 3 centers that have been drafted in the first round in about 10 years, and considering Mangold is being projected by many to be a first-round choice, I think it shows that he's pretty talented. I definitely think that he is good enough to come in here and start. Here's a bio on him:

Quote:

Strengths: Is tall, has adequate bulk and room to grow. Shows better upper body strength than lower body strength. He has adequate initial pop with his hand punch. Shows some ability to jar defenders with initial contact. He has great speed for his size. Comes out of his stance quickly and is fast on pulls and downfield blocks. He shows good balance and body control in pass pro. Plays with good leverage and knee bend. He is competitive and tough at the POA. A fist-fighter type that takes good angles, gets in position and battles to finish. His hands are very strong, which helps him to sustain once he has locked on. Shows the consistent ability to reach the second-level on time. He has a terrific mental capacity. One of the smartest offensive linemen in this year's class. Does an excellent job with line calls. He is durable and reliable. A hard worker on-and-off the field.
Weaknesses: Shows good size potential but still needs to add bulk and improve his lower-body strength. He is fast but lacks ideal COD skills. Will reach the second level but has some trouble hitting the moving target in space. He doesn't possess overwhelming bulk and will have some matchup problems against massive two-gap NT types. He plays with good leverage but lacks an ideal base. Gets driven back into the pocket at times versus powerful bull rushers. Is not an overpowering phone booth blocker.

Overall: Mangold served as a backup during his true freshman season in 2002. He took over as a fulltime starter during his sophomore season in 2003 and has been a fulltime starter since. As a junior in 2004, Mangold earned second team All-Big 10 honors. He started all 12 games at center for the Buckeyes as a senior in 2005. Mangold will need to continue to improve his lower body strength in order to match up better versus bigger, stronger NT's in the NFL. However, he possesses the frame to add bulk and has the work ethic to do so. Mangold also owns all the other physical and mental abilities that it takes in order to develop into a very good starting center in the NFL and very soon. Mangold is clearly the best center prospect in the 2006 class and we expect him to come off the 2006 draft board in the late in the first round or early in the second round.
