kffl.....jets not looking to trade up?

Jets | Team may not look to trade up
Tue, 4 Apr 2006 20:37:37 -0700

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports early word is that the New York Jets won't trade up to get USC QB Matt Leinart, and it's not out of the question for them to draft Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson over Leinart, if both are still on the board.

how would one read into this? smitty

RE: kffl.....jets not looking to trade up?

They got nothing to loose here. i would not be surprised to see them take Vernon Davis at 4.

RE: kffl.....jets not looking to trade up?

if i were the jets i would stay put...
saints won't draft leinart
titans will draft young
jets can stay pat and still have a shot at leinart
if for some reason the titans do draft leinart they could still draft young or a large selection of other players.
for the saint's interest...i would love to see the jets trade up, but they would be foolish to do so.

If the Titans had the opportunity to draft Leinart over Young they'd do it in a second. You think Norm Chow would pass up on his boy for a guy who most NFL scouts won't be ready to start for at least an entire season? No. If Leinart is there at #3, he goes to the Titans.

Victor Green, arguably one of the best safeties in Jets' history, signed a one-day contract with the club yesterday with the intent to retire.

Green, who signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent out of the University of Akron, played with the Jets from 1993 through 2001. He broke into the starting lineup midway through the 1994 season and stayed there until his departure.

Green, a hard-hitting, ball-hawking strong safety, finished his Jets' career with 964 tackles (fifth all-time in franchise history) and 24 interceptions (third all-time) in 144 career regular-season games. He holds the club's single-season tackle record (207 in 1996) and was voted to the Jets' Four Decade Team in 2003.

He also played with the Patriots (2002) and Saints (2003) and didn't play the past two seasons.

"I'm grateful to the Jets' organization for giving me a chance 13 years ago as a rookie free agent and now I'm proud to retire as a Jet," Green said in a statement. "I enjoyed my time in New York, most of all, the Jets' fans ... and hearing the J-E-T-S chant. They know I gave everything I had each week."

Said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum: "Victor showed a tremendous instinct for being around the football and displayed a tenacity and fearlessness when playing the game. He should walk away from the NFL with his head held high."

Also, the Jets will hold a private workout with USC QB Matt Leinart the week of April 17. The club, however, is still believed to be leaning toward selecting either Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and N.C. State DE Mario Williams with their fourth selection overall in this month's NFL Draft.

Dolphins: Miami quarterback Daunte Culpepper was cleared of misdemeanor charges stemming from a boat-party sex scandal.

A Minneapolis judge ruled there wasn't probable cause to determine a crime was committed by Culpepper, one of four Vikings accused of misdemeanor lewd conduct during the cruise last fall on a suburban lake. Culpepper was traded to Miami last month.

Titans: The team told Steve McNair they don't want him working out in its building until his contract is reworked, the quarterback's agent said. McNair was told to go home Monday when he showed up at Tennessee's headquarters for the start of the third week in the Titans' off-season conditioning program.

McNair, the NFL's 2003 co-MVP, is due $9 million in salary in 2006 -- but his salary cap number is $23.46 million. The Titans declined last month to pick up a $50 million option to stretch the deal through 2009, leaving McNair with nearly a quarter of their cap space.

Chiefs: Kansas City signed free-agent cornerback Lenny Walls, giving the club an experienced cornerback to play opposite Patrick Surtain.

Maybe we are considering drafting Leinart afterall . . . Who knows?

patdog 04-05-2006 11:19 AM

If we did draft Leinart would we keep him, are use him as tradebait. I just can't see Brees being to happy with Matt backing him up.

Euphoria 04-05-2006 11:34 AM

There are so many things than can happen and a lot of teams blowing smoke right now, trying to set the stage for the big day. You also have to be careful with the media and reading the reports... they have an agenda as well, build anticipation so mucky mucks like us tune in... and stay interested until then. So one day yeah the Jets will move up... the next Jets will stay put... the next they could trade down... thats 3 plus days of reporting on one team, lol.

xan 04-05-2006 11:38 AM

This is all a negotiating ploy. The less interested you are, the less you have to give up. Ya'll remember Mike Ditka?

patdog 04-05-2006 11:57 AM

Please whatever you do, don't bring Ditka name up. I get a rash everytime i hear it.

xan 04-05-2006 12:03 PM

I hope that rash isn't where I hope it isn't...what WAS your relationship to Iron Mike?

jergensl 04-05-2006 02:28 PM

why should the jets move up 2 picks, when they know they will get 1 of the top 2 qbs at #4?
that is if they are indeed going to draft a qb.

don't get me wrong...i hope they are that dumb, but i just don't see it as a smart move.

deuce,
titans may want young to take a year behind mcnair. mcnair and young already have a working relationship together.

Young before Leinart?????

I will go on record and say no way in hell, especially since they will probably purge the franchise of Steve McNair, Young's mentor. In light of the recent events w/McNair and the Titans, I don't think this is a stretch.

I think that even if the Jets leapfrog the Titans, Tenn will take CUTLER before they take Young.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-05-2006 11:20 PM

If young goes before Leinart...that'll be a damn shame. I know Young has talent and all, but to think he is better, or more NFL ready than Leinart? Come on.

I still think the Jets are smokescreening the situation. They have Pennington. We got questions about Brees' shoulder, but just think what Jets fans have in their minds. Then there is Ramsey. He still wakes up with nightmares about Spurrier's Pass Pro schemes. Not to mention the faith Gibbs had in him (1st mtg notes "Hi I'm Patrick Ramsey. You're Young Franchise QB.", Gibbs: "You mean Mark Brunell, right?")

Looks like this draft situation may end up a little les cut and dried than we had all hoped. I also see the Jets taking Leinart, and if not him, Cutler. I think they are just trying to deflate bids for the number 2 spot. I also think the Titans are trying to make it seem like they have no interest in Matt to deflate folks from feeling the need to jump ahead of them.

Dear lord I hope we do good.

jergensl 04-06-2006 08:04 AM

i'm not saying that young deserves to go before lienart, but what i think will happen. there has been a lot of talk around the league saying that the titans like young better than leinart. that could be a smoke screen, but it is atleast worth mentioning.

FanNJ 04-06-2006 02:55 PM

Titans also where impressed with Cutler at his pro day. Which by the way Payton did attend. I think the draft shock is that Cutler is off the board first based on his upside, Leinart second QB off based on box seat draw, and young third off due to the poor score on the wonderlic. Without that score as well as minimum work out of the shot gun.

hagan714 04-06-2006 03:28 PM

so that is what you hear out of NJ for the jets? Cutler might be a saint, tiatin, or jet.

FanNJ 04-06-2006 03:44 PM

Like everywhere else there is a different Spin every week. I think from a fans perspective they would be happy with either Leinart or Cutler. But most everyone (I speak from fans I know and there are quite a few) know that they need a quarterback and Pennington is not going to be the answer. (He makes a great Cheerleader now though). The Jets have holes too, on OLine and in the secondary, but there D is fairly solid, but the lack of wins and execution lied on offense last year.

From what I'm following I my Opinion is that Cutler will be the first QB off the board based on his talent and smarts. I think Leinart would be a better addition to the Jets with a dink and dunk passing game they run, he would be able to be placed right into the offensive sceme, as he is similar to Pennington in that respect. That being said they also have our similar need at O line and Running Back ( I am a fan of Duce but he's gotta provit this year for the money he's making).

However if the Jets do Move up I think they will take Leinart. If not and we pick at 2 I think Cutler would be a better fit for what we have in place. Hawk or D'Brick at 2 I'd be fine with. Leinart Maybe. Young no way

The Jets trading up is pretty much a 50/50 up here in NY. Kind of like us with Brick and Hawk on this board. You really can't take anything reporters and FO personnel say at this point because no one wants to show their hand. I'm hoping he lights it up in his private workout for the Jets and we can get their 2 first rounders. However, I saw Cherm threw out the possibility of getting the Jets 4,29, and 35 for our #2 in another thread and that is something that isn't going to happen. I think the Jets are our ideal trading partner because I really want 2 first rounders, we may get a 3-4 round pick in addition but thats as much as we'd get. I'd still be real happy with 4,29 and a 3rd rounder for the 2nd pick.
