Super Mario

Mel Kiper is saying that Mario will be our pick i do not think we need another DE. What if they are not going to play him at defensive end. Some draft experts are saying that he can move inside and play DT he has the size 6'7" and 295 pounds. If that was the plan and DT is one of our needs do you think that would be a good move.

RE: Super Mario

I have a thought....with that size......and his speed....wouldn't he make a great LB instead? At 6'7 most Qb's are gonna have a hard time just looking down the field with him in their faces....and of course the guy can rush as well as cover the run. I dunno....just a thought.

RE: Super Mario

Fatius, I think he might be a good fit in a 3-4 scheme as a guy who specializes in blitzing off of the corners. However, I don't think that he has the right body style for LB in a 4-3. I also don't think he has the right body style for a DT. He's not very heavy, and I think that some of the better DTs are really good because they're just over 6 feet tall and weigh over 300 pounds which makes them have a low center of gravity and allows them to really plug holes. I don't know, I really hope we don't take him. We have two very good players at DE, and although it's always good to have depth at a position, I just don't think we can take another DE with so many other holes to fill.

Crusader 04-05-2006 02:27 PM

I really like Mario Williams as a player just not as a Saint. That would be too much money in one position, again. We got other holes to fill first. I rather see Ferguson.

jergensl 04-05-2006 02:29 PM

why in the world does an offensive tackle have a football in his hands?????

FatiusJeebs 04-05-2006 02:30 PM

Exactly Deuce...I mean think of the possibilities. Maybe just maybe the Saints might get him with the though of making him a linebacker or something. I saw some footage on the guy and he reminds me of a taller, bigger Rickey Jackson.

He picked up a fumble and is making his way downfield.... YEAH!!!

FanNJ 04-05-2006 02:52 PM

Tackle lined up as eligible reciever??

MatthewT 04-05-2006 06:31 PM

It would not be a bad deal for the Saints to get Mario. Charles Grant is a very decent player, but he is very streaky. Why not take Mario and deal Grant in the future? For now, it would be a very good rotation while Mario gets his feet wet. As much as I like Grant, the dude basically calls "into to work sick" on too many plays. Having Will Smith and Mario Williams bookend the DE spots could turn out to be very special for the Saints. Drafting Mario to take over for Charles Grant could be as good as Will Smith taking over for Darren Howard.

WVSaint 04-05-2006 06:33 PM

i dont understand the logic of making him a linebacker. if they want an LB it makes way more sense to just draft hawk.

Streaky? No I don't think so. This guy led the NFL DTs in tackles a few years ago and if it wasn't for constant double teams because of our lack of a serious threat on the inside, I'm sure he'd be able to do more. Grant is a beast and has proven that he's one of the better ends in the NFC. Grant would be a starter on every team in the NFC besides maybe the Panthers.

Because we've all seen how awful our FO is at actually getting something worthy out of players (i.e. Darren Howard situation). Besides, we need to win now, and drafting a guy who plays one of our strongest position doesn't make sense. Why draft a guy who isn't going to play every down (if he splits time with Grant), when we can get a guy who will play every down, especially at a more urgent area of need? Besides, even if he did become our full-time starter, then we'd have a Pro-Bowl talented guy just sitting on the bench. It just doesn't make sense. We NEED a DT, we NEED a LB, we NEED a CB, we NEED another OT; we DON'T NEED another DE. What we could use, however, is a backup defensive end, somebody who can provide us with good depth for not a lot of money.

papz 04-05-2006 06:50 PM

Ding ding... that's exactly right WVSaint. Why not draft a guy who can not only rush the passer, but can stop the run along with dropping back in coverage... Hawk makes more sense. Mel Kiper can take his infatuation with Williams and shove it. It does not make sense. Grant had somewhat of a down year and all these analyst are ragging on him. What about all the previous years when he was outstanding for us? The guy is 27... he's coming into his prime and his not exactly killing our cap. Leave him be... he takes on a lot of double teams freeing up everyone else.

haha, that deserves at least a giggle from everyone.....

BiggPoppaFro4 04-05-2006 09:25 PM

I'm not big on the idea of Williams either, but just in case we do (as saints fans) have to face the inevitable...here goes nothing:

I think that with his size, and the fact that his frame has room to grow, we may be looking at something far more valuable to us than the next J Peppers...maybe the next John Henderson. The Jags haven't done so bad by grabbing him, plus that's an immediate double team at the line. that will either free up the secondary since opponents have to stay in and block, or let Grant and Smith go apes*** in the backfield.

We would have to resign grant though. Someone may say he doesn't work hard, but would you if you looked over and saw Sully doing matrix-style slo-mo moves, then realizing he's moving in real-time!? Smith had the stud year he had b/c Grant was getting doubled up on and teams thought Smith was a spot-time or one year wonder.

If we have to stay pat and draft there, I still say Brick. I understand the temptation to take Williams, but I still think we have to address further holes. I know the Jets are smokescreening that they are not moving up, but come on...Pennington has more questions that Brees about his arm and Ramsey will still be in shellshock long into retirement after what Spurrier/Gibbs did to him.

BTW...I'm only playing devil's advocate. As a saint's fan I think we all develop the ability to see a bright side to anything (trading up for sully instead of taking Trufant).

Dont we still have Tony Bryant??

Over the years Grant has been the leader of the Defence, and is a non stop everydown end. He had on down year along with every other player on the team. I 'm willing to write that off based on the cercumstances.

LivnaLieTimay 04-06-2006 06:17 PM

While I think Mario is a very talented player I feel like the Saints worst draft day scenario is that we cannot trade down and we take Mario at 2. Doesn't fill a need and we don't get extra picks to fill our needs.

TIGERSAINT31 04-06-2006 06:26 PM

I do not think we have Tony Bryant anymore

spkb25 04-06-2006 06:31 PM

i don't see the point of drafting mario. the guy could be great but i don't se how that helps us. even if yousay grant is streaky we still have two very good ends. we need a tackle and there is no reason for us to draft anohter de. makes no sense

Agreed. As I posted elsewhere, unless Mario is a player that's so special that he changes the position of defensive end (a la Lawrence Taylor at Outside LB) that we cannot afford to fill the left tackle position for the next decade.

hey ghandi that is what i am hoping now that haz is gone

jergensl 04-07-2006 06:04 AM

after trading gandy we either have to draft brick or sign a free agent.

FatiusJeebs 04-07-2006 09:58 AM

I'm tellin ya...with Mario's size and speed....some good conditioning with team...don't be surprised if they make him a LB. He's tall as hell and has great pass rush skills. Put him in the middle and watch him deflect pass after pass after pass. At least thats what I see the Saints doing if they do draft him at 2.

TheDeuce 04-07-2006 10:33 AM

Being tall is a bad thing for a LB...

FatiusJeebs 04-07-2006 10:39 AM

I can understand your point Deuce....but man...at 6'7......you would make a hell of a pass deflector. Messing up visibility....hell I dunno.....just thinking outside the box ya know?

TheDeuce 04-07-2006 10:41 AM

Yeah, he would be a good obstacle, but him being so high would never work. He'd never be able to get leverage on blockers downfield and that would prevent him from plugging running lanes. He'd just get bowled over.

Man this guy stinks. Just cut him.
Really now that he has Scott Fujita backing him up, he will be turned loose once again. He could have the best season ever with that one change. But If a MLB is added and a DT and/or move Sully to RDT (his natural position?) he is set for the first time in years. Courtney Watson to the WLB (his natural postion) I think we are in pretty good shape.

AllSaints 04-07-2006 05:53 PM

Ok i saw freakin ESPN John Clayton sayin even though new orleans traded gandy they will still get Mario.?? What??? no i havent even heard us being interested in him other than espn..... I would be kinda angry with the selection if we got him at #2 they are saying he is the best D player in the draft unless he will make our D go insanly crazy i wouldnt mind but who really knows? ? ? Maybe is he who we need but i would rather the Hawk before Williams...... I want some Draft Picks i dont no about yall we need to trade out the #2 spot so we can get some extra picks and fill up some positions. !!! ....

saintbuck 04-07-2006 06:00 PM

I agree, if we go defense, it better be Hawk. I like Williams, but we need a captain on D and that usually falls on the shoulders of a linebacker. So being that there is a kick ass line backer who is a leader and a great face for the D, we better get him if we go defense.
