Trading down is best option

I’ve had one busy week thus far.

High school softball playoffs, the end of the prep baseball season and district track meets are all occurring at this time.

Also on Saturday, I’m getting married to Anne Marie Guidry of Lockport. So needless to say, I am moving in many directions these days.

We have a honeymoon trip plan to New York. We plan to see all the sights, catch a New York Yankees game and take in a Broadway play.

During our time in New York, there will be another significant event taking place - the NFL Draft.

Now, I didn’t plan for my honeymoon to coincide with the NFL Draft, but I’m not complaining.

Even though I am leaving New York on draft day, I hope to catch some of the festivities leading into it.

I’m not the only one with a busy schedule this week.

The New Orleans Saints have been busy since hiring Sean Payton as their new coach.

Free agent signings, offseason workouts and the recent minicamp have the organization going full tilt.

But the focus now is on the draft, and the Saints have a wealth of options with the No. 2 overall pick.

Looking at last year’s team. getting help on the defensive side is a must.

The signing of quarterback Drew Brees eliminates the Saints from taking USC’s Matt Leinart or Texas’ Vince Young. Unless Virginia offensive tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson is the target, I can’t see the Saints staying at No. 2.

But why select a left tackle when last year’s top choice Jammal Brown switched from right tackle to left at minicamp?

Brown is athletic enough to play the left side, so unless the Saints put Ferguson at right tackle, taking him with the No. 2 pick doesn’t make sense.

Trading the pick and moving down a few spots to get extra picks for the defense is the way I would go.

The Saints are without a third-round choice because of a trade with the Houston Texans in the 2005 draft. With so many holes to fill on defense, getting extra picks, especially in the first three rounds, makes sense.

There has been speculation of a possible trade between the Saints and the New York Jets.

The Jets have the fourth, 29th and 35th choices and are in need of a quarterback.

With questions surrounding the health of Chad Pennington, the Jets signed former Tulane quarterback Patrick Ramsey. But Ramsey has yet to become a consistent passer in the NFL, so taking a quarterback to groom under the two veterans could be the Jets’ plan.

The Tennessee Titans have also targeted Leinart as their possible quarterback of the future. Tennessee offensive coordinator Norm Chow coached Leinart at USC, and the Titans sit in front of the Jets with the No. 3 choice.

The Titans would love to have Leinart, and it is possible that they could trade with the Saints to prevent another team from jumping in front of them. But Tennessee does not have a

choice in the third round. For the Titans to make any move up the draft, they might have to mortgage their future.

It’s not an attractive move when a team is in the midst of rebuilding.

The one thing I know for sure is that the Saints have options and the draft is deep in talent. With the right deal, the Saints could get a significant boost.

As for me, my options will be limited after Saturday as I join the ranks of the happily married.

After Saturday, the Saints’ options start to become clear. Let’s hope they do what I did with my bride by making the right choice.
