Interesting article--blurb on trade mechanics

We've talked the value chart to death on the board for over a month now. Here are a couple of examples from sportsline on real world trades when you get up that high. The article is about why the Jets must take Leinart.

Quote:

Moving two spots is costly. The last time a club did something like this was 1998, when San Diego moved one position -- from third to second -- to choose its franchise quarterback, Ryan Leaf. It cost the Chargers its first and second (the 32nd overall pick) choices that year, its No. 1 in 1999 and two players.
Quote:

Now let's fast-forward to 2004, when the New York Giants traded their first choice (the fourth overall) for the first pick of the draft. They surrendered a third-rounder that year and the first- and fifth-round choices in 2005.
Interesting thoughts on what a trade like this should look like.

the values are well established. Well maybe if you are the Saints you can afford to overpay...

2003
#17+#18, 1850pts
for
#6 1600pts

and then draft friggin Sully way higher than projected.

That was like giving away a free high 3rd rounder.

Taking Brees and trading gandy does take away some negotiating power. I'd take a discount on letting the Jets move up the 800pts from 4th to 2nd. Their #35+#71= 785pts, close enough.
