RE: Saints sign QB.............

Not a bad signing, he will be a great backup, haven't had a good backup in a long time.
Another good move by Payton.

RE: Saints sign QB.............

Good signing. Although it blows any smokescreen we had left about drafting Leinart, this guy is a solid backup, whereas Bouman can't be counted on. This makes me happy. Keep up the good work Payton.

RE: Saints sign QB.............

i like that pick up a lot. we can cut bouwman now. the guy is a journeymen but a good backup in my opinion

LongTimeFan 04-27-2006 08:02 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

spkb, I forgot to mention cutting Bouwman but I see you didn't, it's past time we get rid of him..

spkb25 04-27-2006 08:05 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

i am with you brother. the guy did worse then brooks last year. he has never really ever been able to fill in for us. why we kepty him this long i have no idea.

LongTimeFan 04-27-2006 08:11 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

As said Brooks was bad but dang Bouman was horrible, I think once cut he'll have a tough time signing any decent contract.

Dhatboi 04-27-2006 08:13 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

that was a retarted move we are suppose to be trying to convice teams were taking a Qb........siging one right before the draft doesnt help

spkb25 04-27-2006 08:17 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

well dhat i see your point but you make your team better when you can.

LongTimeFan 04-27-2006 08:18 PM

RE: Saints sign QB.............

Either way I like the signing, I hope Brees doesn't get hurt this coming season but if he does we have a quality backup, I really don't think signing him will screw us up in the draft at all. IMO

BiggPoppaFro4 04-27-2006 08:31 PM

If any GM out there still thinks we may take a QB, we can still trade our 7th rounder for there 1st.

I like the pick up. AMac is still a bit out, but Bouman was absolutely horrible. I was a big believer that he would be a good switch for us. Man was I wrong on that.

D_it_up 04-27-2006 09:00 PM

Nice pick-up with Martin...another good move by the front office.

JimBone 04-27-2006 09:35 PM

he's not exactly a savoir...he is 36 and he only started 5 games....but he cant be any worse than Bouman

LKelley67 04-27-2006 09:55 PM

I think a veteran backup like Martin is a perfect fit. Low cost, can walk right in and start if oyu need him. Holds a clipboard in style too. He may not have been my first choice but was on the list. I can't see it being much "competition" with Blowman. LOL

I don't think a player like this has any effect whatsoever if you did or did not want to draft Leinart or the likes. SD had that set up- a ProBowl QB, Rivers on the bench for development, and Flutie if you needed someone to lead you for a while in a pinch.

biloxi-indian 04-28-2006 08:28 AM

Don't disagree Martin is an upgrade over BOW_WOW_MAN (if it looks like a dog, acts like a dog, it must be a DOG) but conventional wisdom would have been to cut BOW_WOW_MAN NOW, and sign Martin after the draft. It would have sent a subtle but strong message to the Jets, Raiders, and Titans that their hope for one of the three QB's could be in jeopardy. Then let the trade offers roll in.

When will the FO get it, i.e. conventional wisdom?

Jackson26 04-28-2006 08:36 AM

Excuse me, Jim, did you say 36?! :jkool:

FatiusJeebs 04-28-2006 08:41 AM

Nice pickup.....I heard we also got a defensive tackle or something like that.

FanNJ 04-28-2006 10:12 AM

What's so nice about Martin?? He's old and has never done anything very impressive. So he brought his team back against the god awful saints last year.

thib82 04-28-2006 10:32 AM

He's an experianced verteran who comes from Mike Martz offense, so he brings some offensive knowledge to the saints. I think its a very good pickup for us.

FatiusJeebs 04-28-2006 10:40 AM

Exactly. We all know he is not going to be our savior but he has shown that he can perform when necessary.

xan 04-28-2006 11:15 AM

absolutely dismal timing. I've complained about this FO shooting themselves in the foot, but moves like this only make me think they're aiming higher.

Martin is lucky to have a job, much less potentially competing for a starting role. This isn't a good thing.

WHODATNJ 04-28-2006 11:39 AM

Could be more here than meets the eye. We could use Bouman or Amac in a trade of some kind. I really think if Amac has shown any type of progression from last season we could use him as trade bait. He had lots of looks last year and was projected to go in the first three rounds and the only reason he slipped so far was because of character conflicts. I am not sure Bowman would fit into this senario but who knows. Its all madness and what you think will happen hardly ever does. I love this game and I love this team. WHO DAT!

THe only way he "competes" for a starting job is if Brees gets hurt. And if that does happen, I would much rather have Jamie Martin under center than Todd Bouman. Obviously Martin's not a star in this league, that's why he's a backup. Every team has to have a backup who can come in and play if the starter gets hurt, and this guy has proven that he can do it. You can't compare him to starting QBs. But, comparing him to other backups, he is very good. He went 4-1 last year with the Rams which is pretty damn good. He completed 124-177 passes. Bouman completed 68 of 122 passes. This guy is definitely an upgrade, and although the timing is surprising with the draft on Saturday, I'm glad we got him. Besides, were we really trying to fool people into thinking that we would take Leinart? I think not.

JimBone 04-28-2006 11:58 AM

Regardless, if Brees goes down, we are in a bind...plain and simple.

Savant 04-28-2006 11:59 AM

Just get rid of Bouman all-together.

mighty12 04-28-2006 12:04 PM

I don't think the Jets are interested in QB anymore, so trying to state that we are going to take a QB with the second pick still wouldn't help with a trade. Leinart's stock, for some reason(Maybe coaches actually watched game film last week instead of ESPN highlights) has dropped considerably, and may fall to Oakland. The Jets want either Da Brick or Super Mario so they know that no matter what happens they will get their man. Martin is a solid back up, and will help our team considerably. I really think the Saints are content with drafting #2. Who they draft will be a huge surprise I think, because it WON'T be Williams. I have faith that Sean Payton is not a complete media whore, and will select Da Brick.

Savant 04-28-2006 12:06 PM

Agreed. I think he means business.

WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING? Lucky to have a job? he was 4-1 as a starter, including a win against a Playoff team in the Jags, and when he came in at a backup role he was on fire. That is what we need in a back up. Someone who won't lose us games just because our starter is injured. Give some logic before making damning comments.

xan 04-28-2006 01:37 PM

ooh you're so right, he beat Houston (only throwing 3 passes, so that one really doesn't count - Ryan Fitzpatric is credited with this win), the Saints (who beat themselves), Dallas (after they got smited from the playoffs and mailed it in) and Jacksonville (who also beat themselves - Martin threw 3 interceptions), and managed to lose to SanFran. He played exceptionally well in fill in position when games were out of reach, and still eked out a 83 passer rating. mmm. I stand by my assessment, he's only "good" when facing a terrible team or the team's in prevent defense and he's got "the greatest show on turf" receivers. Lucky to have a job, though better than Bouman, who's luckier. Hell, he did that for the Rams and they're not interested. Want some more damning comments?

FanNJ 04-28-2006 01:48 PM

Passed up the Ramsey for this clown, still perplexes me.

xan 04-28-2006 01:52 PM

I'm with you Fan, Ramsey was probably the pick of the litter, litter being the operative word.

zachsaints52 04-28-2006 01:53 PM

Who else is out there we coulda gotten?

FanNJ 04-28-2006 01:59 PM

For the money and age I would rather have seen JT O'Sullivan back Mike Mc Mann Jeff Blake or Kliff Kingbury again over Martin.

FatiusJeebs 04-28-2006 02:37 PM

I say we bring back DeBerg! He should be rreeaall cheap by now.

chRxis 04-28-2006 02:53 PM

i think the loser of the bouman/martin backup battle will be sent packing... no room on our roster for 4 quarterbacks... the winner of the position is merely a stop gap to next year, when we do select a quarterback or sign a decent backup in the offseason... neither bouman nor mcphearson (at least not at this point in his development) has any trade value, not even to ravens who are chomping at the bit for a quarterback right now...

turbo_dog 04-28-2006 06:26 PM

Saints Sign Another QB

Moving to shore up their quarterback depth chart, and to add veteran insurance in the event that starter Drew Brees is unable to open the season, the New Orleans Saints have signed veteran Jamie Martin to a two-year contract.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2425178

He is a much better #2 than Bouman. Good move, just not sure if they should have done it before tomorrow.

turbo_dog 04-28-2006 06:46 PM
