Someone please help me understand...

Why would we spend a second round pick on one of our deepest positions on the team. I am not buying the Smith will be moved to conerback explanation when we could have simply drafted a true conerback while keeping Smith at a position that he played very well.

If we move Smith the coner you have two problems. You have a strong safety playing corner, his third best position and you have an unproven player playing strong safety. On top of that, we reached for a safety we could have gotten in the fourth round.

We have spent first and second round picks on two back up players. This is fine when you are stacked at every position but the Saints can't afford this luxury.

I have a damn good answer for you my friend...

We're the Saints.

And... welcome aboard man.

RE: Someone please help me understand...

Bush isn't a backup. He's an offensive weapon that is unparalleled in the NFL other than Vick.

He's 6pts waiting to happen.

Hey Papz!! It looks like your avator is laughing at us right now......

It's alright jnormand... it's just another day in the life of being a Saints' fan. I think we're all accustomed to it now... being the laughing stock of the league. And yet... we're still all here.

Mad_Squabbles 04-29-2006 07:07 PM

So in other words you are saying that Duece is going to the bench. Some how I don't see that unless he is still injured. I see Bush getting plenty of playing time but I don't see him starting.

With all of the holes we have on this team I don't see the logic of picking a third down back when we could have traded him for many more picks to fill actual needs. Especially when we just signed a good third down back for little money.

RE: Someone please help me understand...

Hey, It's all part of being a Saints fan bro! Look at it this way, at least WE HAVE A TEAM to b!tch and moan about. We can all silently go home after games and kick our teddy bears.

At least we still have the Saints man. Better than not having a team at all, which is what we though might have happened 6 months ago.

Be happy....or something.

RE: Someone please help me understand...

If any of the other 31 teams in the league would have landed Reggie Bush at #2 they would be having a party, yet here all you guys do is complain. The guy is an amazing player. He is going to so much for our running and passing game, as well as on special teams. We drafted the best player in the draft and you guys complain. Deal with it, Reggie is a Saint and is a great pick.

LordOfEntropy 04-29-2006 07:14 PM

Well, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one scrating my head over the Roman Harper pick.

jnormand 04-29-2006 07:15 PM

RE: Someone please help me understand...

I am dealing with that....I'm not complaining about Reggie. I just think the Saints should have gone a different route with their Round 2 pick. But oh well...it's over....maybe they thought Roman was really special.

RE: Someone please help me understand...

I agree with you on the 2nd round pick, a typical Saints pick. I was just referring to the fact that we should be real excited about Reggie and not let a stupid 2nd round pick totally ruin our day. Sure it was a dumb pick but I'm not going to let it ruin the drafts first day because we did get Faine atleast. I'm curious to hear the Saints comment on Harper and explain to us their logic.

papz 04-29-2006 07:19 PM

I can drink a beer to that jnormand.

What?! We have an LOE sighting?

TheDeuce 04-29-2006 07:20 PM

I have no problem with the Reggie Bush pick. In all honesty, there's nothing else we could have done. To pass up on Reggie without trading would be even worse than Houston passing up on him. Granted, I would have liked a trade more, but I am assuming that we weren't getting any legit offers. So basically, the Reggie pick is fine with me. He's an amazing athlete, and now with him and Brees, we have two new guys who are some of the most exciting athletes New Orleans has seen in a long time.

However, that being said, the Roman Harper pick is absolutely awful. Unless I'm missing some fundamental piece of information like Dwight Smith is now a CB (which I don't think I am), this pick makes little to no sense to me. He has limited upside. He is not a great athlete. He does not play anywhere near a position of need for us. Yes, I will say that he is a very smart player and seems to have great intangibles, but from what I understand, he probably would have been there in the 4th round. Unreal, great job Saints.

Another thing, I like getting Jeff Faine. Yes, he might not be as good as our previous center. But we did manage to turn one pick into two players, even though one of those seems like total crap right now.

Overall: C+

LOEs avatar still scares me...

All I can say is Haslett must have snuck into the War Room.

HAHA...nice 504 on the eyeblack.

jnormand 04-29-2006 07:23 PM

I hope that Roman guy isn't on this site...!!! Man, the guy would probably feel like a big A-hole!

LordOfEntropy 04-29-2006 07:29 PM

No, I think Roman is smiling from ear-to-ear. Nothing against the guy - he's a good player, qualified for the NFL. But he was projected for the third or fourth round. He's not a #43 pick. And worse, he's not a need position (of which we have so many).

LivnaLieTimay 04-29-2006 07:30 PM

I like the avatar dberce. I tried to get a Reggie avatar right after we drafted him but clearly I have no clue how to do it. I downloaded a pic from online, put it on my comp, browsed, double clicked on the pic and the file name was in the space provided but when I press submit nothing happens. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I can wait until its in the gallery on the site.

After reading that, it doesn't sound like he's that bad. He had a nice highlight reel.

JimBone 04-29-2006 07:51 PM

I'll say it again...lets see what the plans are for Dwight Smith before judging this pick. If we plan on moving him to corner and that makes our starters look like...McKenzie and Smith at corner and Scott/harper and Bullocks at safety...that really makes our secondary a strong point of our team...making Craft and Fred Thomas less of a need, Scott plays in the dime package and Bellamy is out of a job...i like it. Not what i wanted, but if thats how they play it out, i see their point.

LordOfEntropy 04-29-2006 08:02 PM

I think it's pretty much a no-brainer at this point that Smith is moving back to corner. Isn't it obvious? But was Harper the best safety on the board? Or rather, couldn't he have been obtained at a lower pick?

I have no problem taking a safety and moving Smith back to corner. But I do have a problem with wasting draft value.

LordOfEntropy 04-29-2006 08:40 PM

First day grade -- C+ -- would've been an A if not for Harper at 43.

saintswhodi 04-29-2006 08:42 PM

Harper was not th ebest safety at that point. That makes it EVEN worse.

Even if Smith is moved to corner what makes the team think a converted strong safety can be a starting corner in the nfl. And even if Smith does make a smooth transition, Harper could have been had in the 4th round.

The Saints have a bad habit of reaching for players that only they think are deserving of being picked where they are picked. Every ranking you see have these players ranked much lower and guess what? These players usually suck. Why don't the Saints use the same scouting that we use?

It looks like we outsmart ourselves every draft...

BiggPoppaFro4 04-29-2006 09:13 PM

Alls I can say is that our 2nd day better be full of good picks or I'm gonna.....I'm gonna...aw, hell, I'll just take it like the Saints fan I am.

I wasn't for taking Bush, but I'm willing to drink the kool-aid and see it for what it is: the best possible selection. Bush can do things for our offense that take pressure off Brees and Deuce.

But Harper better have qualities no one but our scouts can see. There were alot of good quality guys left at that pick. I'm mean, if that's what you are gonna do, trade down again for F***'s sake!

I do like the addition of Faine though. next best thing to having a 3rd rounder..actually, with our FO, better than letting them pick.

zachsaints52 04-29-2006 09:24 PM

Wasn't Smith a CB before he was a FS? I hope something happens in the second day. I like the Faine pickup though.

As we all will PoppaFro... It's sad that I find it so funny.

hagan714 04-29-2006 09:32 PM

no more safeties please. well we got day two to save it. maybe we should all thank houston for picking bush for us. They made us pick Bush,
man it was hard to watch GB do so good in the draft. OLB AJ, MLBHodge, T Colledge, C Spitz and then get Greg Jennings WR.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-29-2006 09:34 PM

papz, at this point all we have left is our ability to laugh at our own pain....

SuJaguar00 04-29-2006 11:46 PM

Wow! It pains me to be at this site reading posts after what should be an exciting day for our fans. While most of us would agree that the picks were not as expected but as I have seen on previous post, the draft still has four rounds to go. There is no way that we could pass on the highest rated guy on our board at #2 no matter the position. Bush's versatility is what makes him special and his marketing ability will attract fans and sponsorships to this area which we sorely need right now.

Also, how soon we forget about the quality moves that the Front Office and new staff has made with the addition of Brees, Bennett, Fujita, Simmons, and the like and with what I like to call "additions by subtractions" in Brooks. Gandy and B. Williams.

I think we should all put into perspective what a great transformation this organization has undergone this offseason and be excited about the posibility of improving next year as a franchise and a football team.

I for one and still very excited about the upcoming season as well as the remainder of the draft tomorrow.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-30-2006 12:18 AM

whoa, slow down there cheer bear...we are Saints fans, moaning and kvetching is what we do.

I don't see anyone writing off the season or putting a gun to our collective temple. Just some friendly venting about the draft. Getting Bush is a good thing, but the Harper pick isn't..it's a reach, and that's putting it lightly. He may prove us all wrong, and for our sake, I hope he does.

JimBone 04-30-2006 12:40 AM

Well, we are all saints fans, we all want the saints to win, and we all want to point out the reasons where the saints are still the saints...thats just how it goes.
