Chating with Roman
Most players feel they should have gone higher in the draft.
But Alabama safety Roman Harper expressed surprise Saturday that the Saints had taken him in the second round with the 43rd overall pick.
"I thought it would be a while longer," Harper said. "When my mom answered the phone and told me it was general manager of the New Orleans Saints it was totally out of the blue."
Most projections had Harper as a mid-second to early third-round pick. One publication rated Harper going as low as the fourth round.
Harper added he was elated at joining the team that had drafted Reggie Bush earlier in the day.
"I don't even know if the Saints are going to have any more money for me," he said. "I'm a big fan of Reggie Bush.
"I always wanted to me him on video games. I'll probably be the first one to ask for his autograph."

nice yeah

I don't think anyone is happy with this pick, we totally lost our minds with this pick. New coaching staff, same management. I'm still happy about the draft, I would say it was a good day because I like the Bush pick but it could have been a great day had we put some thought into the #43 pick.

Yeah I cussed myself when this pick was made. It's not good, but I'm not rushing to judgement. I will wait to see what our coaching staff has in store for our secondary before I predict eternal doom for our team.

Yes... and that's why I'm pissed. It COULD have been a great day which makes it all that worse. Nothing at all wrong with selecting Bush if we would have put more thought into our 2nd pick. It was an average day at best for me. No matter what we do tomorrow, I cannot grade us out to better than a C- for this draft. One great player... and a bunch of roster fillers which blows because we have so many needs.

GoldRush-

I sure hope you're not referring in anyways that I'm predicting eternal doom for our team. Cause if you are, once again you need to learn how to read. I've said numerous of times that I feel we're going to compete for a playoff spot this season. A suck draft is a suck draft. A suck draft doesn't equate into eternal damnation for our team.

Is there any video or comments from the saints FO or Payton explaining the Harper pick? I would like to hear their explanation...

Why are you taking everything I'm saying as if I'm referring to you? You are apparently not the only one who is unhappy with the Saints picks today, which doesn't surprise me. I'm speaking in reference to the gloomy fan in general. Some are consistently pessimistic and others are just peevedx because the team didn't pick the guy they wanted them to. I just prefer to defer my judgement until I see the entire picture. You do you though.

Awful pick, that's all I have to say about that.

JimBone 04-29-2006 07:43 PM

Well, if this pick was made because we want to move Smith to corner, then i agree with it. The best thing i have heard about Harper is that he was described as someone who should be playing for the Patriots...very smart player and is never out of position...I'll take that over someone with speed who doesnt know where he has to be. But if they have no intentions of moving Smith, this pick makes no sense.

TheDeuce 04-29-2006 07:47 PM

True, I like the fact that this guy is really smart and seems to be a leader. He apparently has great intangibles. However, I just don't know what led us to pass up on Youboty or Hodge or all these other guys on the board that had first and second round grades.

wheelman 04-29-2006 07:52 PM

Youbouty, Hodge, and Wroten fell to the third. Every other team saw the same thing as the Saints FO.

TheDeuce 04-29-2006 07:55 PM

Wroten I understand, he has a drug problem. I'm not sure about the others. Youboty was a potential first-rounder.

I'm also kind of worried about Reggie being happy in New Orleans.

Bush didn't get away, even though I'd heard earlier in the day that Bush had his agent, Joel Segal, tell the Saints that Bush didn't want to play for them and wanted to be a Jet.
That was from an article by ESPN columnist Michael Smith. I wonder what he HONESTLY feels about it. Payton can say whatever he wants about Reggie being happy about being a Saint, but I wonder what he really feels. If he's not happy, I think that will make him want more money.

BrooksMustGo 04-29-2006 11:52 PM

Well if Reggie feels bad about what he's making, he ought to call his good buddy Matt Leinart. I bet Leinart would love to have gotten a call from New Orleans.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-30-2006 12:05 AM

lol BMG.

The Harper pick baffles me, but they get paid to evaluate, I get paid to...what do I do anyway?

I can feel better about getting behind the bush pick because our FO didn't two the two things we could have easily done: 1) take a deal that hoses us and makes the other team look good, 2) reach for someone else when the obvious choice, talent-wise, was sitting in our laps. Bush wasn't my first choice, but at number 2, with him there and no good deals...good job.

hagan714 04-30-2006 12:34 AM

well payton got the second safety he was after. Smith to CB? Bullock slides over?

JimBone 04-30-2006 12:39 AM

I am not going to rush to judge this draft just yet...Payton seems to be very high on Harper and he referred to both he and Bush as "their type of player". So you can just see him trying to put his stamp on this team. Which means you can cross off anyone on your draft board with a history of off field issues or work ethic questions...and that is something i can live with.

BiggPoppaFro4 04-30-2006 12:48 AM

Good point, JB. Nice to see that in Payton after our last regime

Tobias-Reiper 04-30-2006 01:22 AM

For years everyone (including myself) has been *****ing and moaning about the Saints choosing physical talent over football skills. Here's this kid Harper, that most everyone, when referring to him, uses words like "intelligent" and "hard hitter", and having "football skills".

Make up your minds.

JimBone 04-30-2006 03:02 AM

I like the idea of having that kind of players on the team...but just not so much at that position...how about an intelligent leader at perhaps...DT...or LB...or CB...or OT...
