LongTimeFan 05-26-2006 07:36 PM

I'm 41 years old and have been a die hard Saints fan since 1977 (13 years old when I began watching the Saints, my mom was a huge Cowboy fan so the Cowboys was the team I first started watching, didn't take me long to find out about the New Orleans Saints, I never missed a game unless I was at work and still watched some of the games at work, (I hope my boss isn't a member here)
being a LongTimeFan hasn't been all good but have to say I enjoyed the Saints more than not.
A few years ago the team came to Lafayette LA for a visit with the fans, we got there real early and to our surprise Benson was walking around waiting for all the fans to arrive, I spoke with him one on one for about 30 minutes, he asked me a lot of questions as to why I was such a big fan, I think he liked my answers, I also met Bobby Hebert, Jim Mora, Ricky Jackson and Eric Martin plus a few other players who made the trip.
I try and make at least one game per year , my favorite game to go to is when the Falcons come to town.
My favorite All Time Saints player is Bobby Hebert.
My favorite coach was Jim Mora

TallySaint 05-26-2006 09:29 PM

Hi. TallySaint here. Tallahassee Saint.

Born and raised in Panama City. Tallahassee since 1985.

After my first few steps outta bed and a long hot shower in the morning I feel much younger than my fifty years. Before the shower I creak and groan under my breath. After shower, its on. Do a little nekked towel dance for my still-sleeping bride (Friday morn's she gets the full monty extra happy nekked towel revue), dress and head to work....

I love football.

Some of my fondest early memories are pre-AFL - Starr, Unitas, Lilly, Renfroe, Anderson (not the QB, the Packers RB), Meredith, etc. When dad and I watched football together, YA Tittle, Gifford, and the Golden Boy were there - don't remember them. Hmm... I do remember the Giants with the huge numbers on the front of helmets. Don't remember Jim Brown but Leroy Kelley was the ****. Thighs as big as oaks.

I was 14 or so when Broadway Joe guaranteed the win. In high school when the Dolphins ran the table. I was a huge Cowboy fan in the 60's. Back when it was real football. Being a Florida boy I soon gravitated to the Dolphins. I can tell you every player in every position on the '72 team.... and their backups. Very cool time to be a Dolphins fan. Hoopla...good times. Ya' know? Being somewhat old school, I hopped off the Dolphin train when Mark legally changed his middle name to Super.

In the mid-70's I didn't pay much attention to football. In '75 I joined the Army. Airborne. Jumped out of my first airplane and got married the same week. Survived both for many years.
After the service went to "Colege" and went to work in Hammond.

That's where I got hooked. Seminoles in the dome ranked #6 and Tulane Dad/Son English whippin' our butts. A little Breakers action. Remember them? A co-worker took me to a pre-season Saints-49er game. Terrace. Walkin' down to my seat I thought I was gonna fall right down over the edge onto the field. When I left that night I knew I'd be a Saint for life.

New Orleans has been my second home of sorts. The wife and I try to get there at least once a year. Because of Katrina, unfortunately, our last trip was the pre-season scrimmage in Hammond a coupla' years ago. Hopefully we'll get over for a game this year. In past seasons, single ticket game tickets were easy to come by. Gonna be a little tougher this year - that's a good thing.

Big Saints fan. Big Seminole fan. Love to fish the gulf saltwater flats over this way. It don't get much better in the fall than gettin' up early Sunday morn, nekked towel dance, catchin' a mess of trout and macs, lightin' the grill and tuning in to football.

While I'm thinkin' of it - on a side note. If we score 18 or more ... and they score 17 or less. We win.

D_it_up 05-27-2006 04:51 AM

This is gonna be good.....

I'm D_it_up2, but you can all call me D. (Had this name since I joined this forum due to the fact the Saints D has been pathetic the entire time I've been a member.) I'm 30 and live in the Ruston, LA area. I'm going back to LA Tech University to persue the degree I should've gotten years ago.

I wasn't like a lot of people on here who have lived and breathed the Saints since Day 1, but I'm making up for lost time. I have always been a huge baseball fan, and have been a Chicago Cubs fan since I was a wee lad. Football wasn't even big on my list as a youngster, but I loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was a big fan of Mean Joe Greene, John Stallworth, Franco Harris, Louis Lipps, and mostly Terry Bradshaw. My dad was a Cowboys fan, so I always had to root against him. I didn't like the Saints much because of my grandfather's opinion of Bum Phillips. However, when I really got into football around the age of 11, I realized that Saints games were all that came on the local channels on Saturdays. I believe that was the first season that Jim Mora coached the Saints. I really got pumped up about football as a whole, and really grew to love the homestate team. I have been a devoted fan ever since. I cuss, swear, throw things, and kick immovable objects during games, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Favorite Saints player of all-time: Eric Martin
Favorite QB: Yep....I said it....Bobby Hebert, but Brees has the definite potential to take his place. SCREW ARCHIE MANNING!!!!!

P.S. I'm gonna get banned for that one. lol

saintbuck 05-27-2006 06:22 AM

I'm 25, born and raised in Mamou La. Saints fan since burth. Mamou is a town overwhelmed with LSU fans, so when LSU won the championship, they all downed and ridiculed the Saints. I hope LSU never wins another game as long i live. Now with Saints making things happen, some of these tiger faithfuls are talking good about the Saints. I wish all these bandwagon fans would just forget the Saints, so when we have our day in the sun, it wont be ruined by the smell of hypocracy and tiger $hit, that it will be the true fans who have been there through the $hit and the shine

hagan714 05-27-2006 06:52 AM

This is cool. Been to a few sites and have never seen something like this. glad to see there are at least two more 40 somethings here.
Being in construction I travel around a good bit so do not be surprised if i post a visit to your town and offer to buy you beer and share a saints game with me. If any one is in the upper north east let me know and we can share the joy of 2 saints fans with those other less fortunate NFL fans of lesser teams together. I am hoping our company gets part of the bid for the levee system. that would put me in NO for at least 2 months during the season. I am not a very good catholic but when the bid came out I have burned a few candles. I know that is not the idea behind them but like i said i am not that good of a catholic. :D

Gainesville Saint

Hola, Greg from Gainesville, Fl. Grew up as a military brat, became a Saints fan in Elementary school. Dad was stationed at Keesler AFB. Became a season ticket holder back in the glory days of the Dome patrol (remember camping out for playoff tix). Graduate of Ocean Springs High in MS, before moving to Alaska with family. Attended Alaska Anchorage (though I'm definitaly a GATOR at heart), before graduating and moving to Fl. Currently celebrated First wedding anniversary and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first child in early July! I travel to the Tampa game every year, and am hoping to get to a game in the ATL soon. Of course there is still nothing better than watching a game in the Dome sweet Dome!

NOSaints 05-27-2006 01:26 PM

Well ... How I came to be a Saints fan is long and colorful, but here goes. I was born in Camaguey Cuba in 1954, yes that would make me 51, but will be 52 July 9th. Castro had taken over Cuba in 1959 and by the time 1962 came around, life was miserable ... no food, no future, so my mom decided we needed to escape. In the escape, my mother and sister were caught, but somehow, I made it to Miami, alone, and wound up in an orphanage where I lived until I was adopted as a foster child by an Italian family in Ramsey NJ. That is where I learned about football as an 8 year old watching the Jets and Giants. The highlight of my stay in NJ was getting Joe Namath's autograph at the entrance to the tunnel at half time. The whole time I lived in NJ, I had no contact with my family, and I did not know if I would ever see them again.

In early 1967 I got word that my mother had gotten out of Cuba and had chosen New Orleans as the city where she would move to. On March 17th, 1967, I arrived in New Orleans, and that’s when it all began. I was recruited from my grammar school to sell popcorn and peanuts at Tulane stadium for this upstart NFL team called the Saints, and it didn’t take long before I became a fan. Like I have mentioned in other posts, I worked at every Saints game at Tulane stadium, and also every Sugar Bowl and Super Bowl in those years. My favorite Sugar Bowls were when LSU beat Wyoming in 1968, and when Archie Manning & Ole Miss beat the Arkansas Razorbacks in 1970. Little did I know he would later become a Saint.

While in High School at Brother Martin, I saw the Dome going up but have never been inside it. In 1973 I joined the NAVY, and was a machine gunner in a CH46 Helicopter.

I have had to go to see the Saints in L.A. and San Diego when they played the Rams, Raiders, and Chargers. I have been an aerospace engineer and a computer scientist for the past 29 years at BOEING Aerospace. My office is a shrine to the NO Saints, and I have been harassed like everyone … so I have THICK skin, OK. I hope this year to come to my first game in the Dome, and hopefully I will get to meet some of you when I come.

GEAUX SAINTS !!!

LKelley67 05-27-2006 01:26 PM

still diggin on this. It might be a thread to keep archived for new people to read and add their 2cents to.

I wonder if this is representative of total fans in how many chose the Saints because of their cool uniforms? Better not change those.

Tally, you remember those unbelieveable Packers-Colts games in the '60's?

add also to me... I am kinda a reformed major league baseball nut. I ran the most serious fantasy league I have ever heard of for several years. That is, the intensity, commitment, and cash involved- so much so I had to quit it. It was taking up my whole life. I loved baseball so much I considered and looked into a new career in management. I probably could have started as asst. GM for the Astros AA franchise. It ended up being too big of a step down in money to sacrifice though.

Also, big music lover here. I go to a lot of shows mostly blues, blues-rock to rock. I have a few thousand CDs in my collection.

As a now back in Louisiana Saints fan I salute all our faithful residing in other areas! I know what it takes to stand up for our beloved franchise.

hagan714 05-27-2006 05:52 PM

dwiley21 did they still have the Kesseler AAU Swimming Inventational on base when you were there? I got to swim there a couple of times. loved that road trip. but that was in the 70's.
Okay kelly i have to see this collection. turn the volume off the game and jam on some blues. I did some college DJ at LSU, southeastern, Nicholes St. and Tulane. Bounced around abit in my first go around at college. You are coming close to being given the rights to the first B&G gathering.
NOSaints is our senior rep here.

Jackson26 05-27-2006 07:33 PM

My name is Andrew and I live in Madison, MS. Jackson26 is exactly what is sounds like: my *hometown* and Deuce's professional number. I've been a Saints fan my whole life (19.5 years), but I really came into my own as a sports fan and a Saints fan in particular at the Saints game vs. Detroit in 200, which I remember we lost 10-14. I own a (signed) Deuce jersey, and an old Jeff Blake jersey, from the six-odd weeks he started at quarterback. My favorite player is Deuce McAllister, who graduated from my favorite college, Ole Miss.

Boogro 05-27-2006 08:12 PM

I was born in October in 1980, which makes me 25, born during the saints game. Went to and graduated from Buras in 1998 and had a bad disliking for Newman...ala the Manning school. We beat Peyton when he was a freshman and sophmore in route to a state championship and runner-up. So therefore, I am no fan of Archie, Peyton, Eli or even Cooper. I played baseball so I never got to play football against Eli, but it would have been fun to get a shot or two in.

Two memories that stick out: The play-off game we won, I witnessed it with my own two eyes and felt the energy. The dome was literally rocking. After the game I was so hoarse, but I showed off to my friends the ticket of history in the making and loved it.

Two, working for the saints when I was going to Nicholls for training camp, 2002. My cousin Jim (aka Jimbone) and I worked the sidelines for all the practices and the b&g scrimmage. We also worked a saints game where we blew up the helmet and drove cars out of the field at half time. Well, we got to eat lunch with the guys and actually got to see the players as persons. That's why I liked Brooks for so long because he is a good dude, but I am glad to get rid of him. Jim was lucky enough to recieve a pass from him as he threw the ball away. Also, we stole a saints football that was left after practice. Nothing better then getting paid to watch football, esp. your favorite team.

I noticed how people say the teams they like the most. Well, I am gonna say the teams I hate the most....Falcons, Cowboys, Colts, Raiders, Dodgers, Mets, and the Damn Yankees. Players include, Toi Cook and anyone associated with the teams I named.

Anyways, now that Katrina f-ed up my families' lives, we are now back in Thibodaux. R.I.P. Buras

D_it_up 05-27-2006 10:03 PM

LOL...Sorry, pak....I just dislike Archie almost as much as I disliked Brooks.

SaintsfaninVA 05-28-2006 07:01 AM

Well I am 21 years old and living in Virginia currently. I remember i got into the Saints when I was about 5 or six. My dad had a Raiders/Saints game on the TV, and i told him I thought their colors were really cool. I told him that was my favorite team and like a week later for Christmas he got me a Saints hat and starter jacket(remember those things?). Ever since then Ive been hooked, they were the first professional sports team I was ever interested in, and they still are my favorite no doubt. Ive gotten a lot of flak living here liking the Saints, all these damn Redskins fans around here. I just love seeing the look on peoples faces when they ask what my favorite football team is and I say the Saints. Theyre kind of just like "why?". I get a kick out of it everytime. Anyways thats my story.

zachsaints52 05-28-2006 09:41 AM

I am 17 and live in Sotu West Virginia. I started likeing the Saints because Donte' Stallworth was my favorite player, and after that everything kinda just kept going. I have been a fan since 2003 and havent't looked back since. And I agree with SaintsfaninVA, except its Steelers fans here (because Heath Miller is from down here and all). I guess you can say I always root for the underdog, because I was a Red Sox fan seince Hideo Nomo threw the no hitter at Cambden, but this year with all the bandwagon and stupid trades I decided to be a D-Rays fan. And a 76ers fan too. So I am looking at for all three sports only one Championship I believe (76ers in the 80's). And I have only seen one other Saints jersey, and its the son of my High School coach who coached Horn at Itawamba.

zachsaints52 05-28-2006 09:51 AM

Also I will be going to play football at Oklahoma Panhandle State Universtiy after my senior year of High School, Coach already has me situated there. I know they went 1-10, but does anyone know anything else about them? Thanks in advance

ATX_SAINT 05-28-2006 10:26 AM

I'm 35 years old. I've been a Saints fan for as long as I can remember. I'm orginally from Baton Rouge but, I have been living in Austin, TX for the past 11 years. I've always represented the Saints, unlike all of these sometiming cowboys fan here. I'm ready for the Saints to kick some butt this year. And a special A$$ whipping when we play the cowboys this year. That will be one of the games I'll make this year sporting my Reggie Bush jersey in Dallas 8)

Cassady37 05-28-2006 11:09 AM

I'm 42 years old, currently living in Knoxville, Tn. but grew up in Ocean Springs, Ms. I've been a Saints fan since 1977 and my younger brother and I share the passion for this underdog team. We moved to Tennessee in '89 and we used to watch the games here in Knoxville at a sports bar which was hard to come by since we were usually out-numbered by fans from other teams. Which means they got the priority of games to watch. But, as the years went by we built up a following of Saints fans and finally weighing in at 30 fans strong we received our own corner and big screen to watch every Sunday. We regularly attend the Falcons/Saints game at the Georgia Dome and until Michael Vick signed with Falcons it was a great experience. The fans treated us pretty good and we usually split games with the dirty birds every year. But the atmosphere changed after Arthur Blank took over as owner and Michael Vick become god in Atlanta. Now the fan's attitude is much more hostile and I can't bring my 8-year-old son to the games. My brother, step-dad, (who is now deceased), and I used to go to the games in the Superdome and my ex-wife's grandfather and I used to watch games on Sundays when we couldn't get to N.O. When my son was born in '97 we brought him home in a Saint's baby outfit so he has the mantle of Saintsdom already bestowed upon him. I miss living on the Gulf Coast and hopefully one day will live there again. My brother and I now go in halves on Direct Tv and watch the games at home and on the days we expect to have a great game, we travel 1 hour away to buy Popeye's chicken and Barq's rootbeer to feel like we're on the coast again. So when we finally make it to the Superbowl, the investment in emotion is going to explode and I will cry like a baby.

JOESAM2002 05-28-2006 11:23 AM

Well I guess I'll get this started for some of us older members. I'm 54 years old and been a Saints fan since they announced the franchise in 1966. Before that I was forcefed the Cowboys at my grandmothers. I was born in New orleans and raised in DeRidder. I had open heart surgery a while back and had to retire, even from working with the great guys here at BnG. I sometimes miss moderating but for the most part, I'm hardly ever here.

I moved to Crystal Beach Texas about 3 years ago, got my house on the beach,my new 52" hd tv and Sunday ticket. I was at the dome as the guest of SMG management right before Katrina hit. Saw my hotel room and a restaurant I had just eaten in destroyed on tv. I feel for all the people on the gulf coast. We just barely got hit by Rita last year.

If the good Lords willing, I'll be in the Dome for the Saints/Falcons game in September with you guys.(Thanks Halo).

God bless New Orleans the Gulf coast and the Saints!
Geaux Saints!!!

xan 05-29-2006 07:41 AM

Well, I'm xan. I'm 47 and living in beautiful central New Jersey, exiled here since the oil bust collapsed the New Orleans economy in 1984. Born in MS and raised from 1st to high school graduation in New Orleans. I was a classmate of one of the original minority owners' sons and my grandparents had season tickets for the first few seasons until my grandfather died. Through my classmate, I got some really cool, yet useless Saints logoed merchandise, which I collected until graduation from high school. My fathers' business had both season tickets and a suite throught the early 80s and I got to go to many games when my grades merited.

An All-American athlete in my chosen sport, I did enough stupid things to get admitted to an Ivy League university, from which I graduated in 5 years (taking a year off to train for the Olympic Trials). I returned triumphantly to New Orleans to teach and coach just as the price of oil collapsed. (I had the unusual pleasure of teaching Payton and Cooper Manning swimming lessons). I couldn't bring myself to become a parasite, so I forewent law school to enroll and eventually graduate from Tulane Business School. With no hope of employment in New Orleans, I managed to con a Fortune 50 conglomerate to pay for my move to New Jersey.

I worked for several other mega companies before shunting into a new career managing development stage companies, mostly in healthcare. My last company went public, so I'm in-between at the moment, and enjoying harrassing you hoi polloi. My family is still very ingrained in New Orleans and I visit about 5 times a year.

I have two favorite memories of being at Saints games. The first is stomping on the metal floor supports of the upper deck of old Tulane Stadium to make that thunder sound when opponents were in our end of the field. The second was being in the visiting owners' suite for an Atlanta game; the Saints were in the process of mertylizing a totally inept Falcons team when the owner, increasingly despondent and frustrated by what he saw, called down to the field and fired the coach halfway through the 4th quarter. My dad and I did all we could not to cheer and laugh.

Howdy!

I'm from St. Louis & I've been a Saints fan since I was 5 (liked them cuz' of their helmets). I despise all things Rams (home of the biggest fair weather fans on the planet), & I adore the Saints !

I have yet to make my trek to Mecca (aka: the Superdome) to see a Saints home game, but I'll be in attendance 11/11 when I'm in Tampa to see the Saints continue their domination of the Tampa Bay Schmucks (I hope to see some of you down there, & possibly enjoy a beverage).

A bit of attention whoring now..... for the past few months I've had a Saints site up here called the Saints Conclave & I hope that you'll find time to visit & give me some pointers/suggestions/constructive criticism.

I look forward to being more involved on this forum in the days & months to come!

TallySaint 06-03-2006 01:21 AM

So just to re-cap a few highlights....

"Becoming a Saints fans was an avant-garde choice and I liked the shock value of telling people in the Midwest that I liked the Saints. "

"I have had my head split open in Phoenix because I refused to wear the paper bag, Peanuts thrown at me in San Fran, Jeersy ripped off in Denver, and the list goes on. I personally dont give a Fu#% what people think about my Saints."

"Was living in MPLS when the viking demolished us. They could not understand why I was still happy. hey it was our first winning season."

" have my magnetic saints helmets on my truck(you get strange looks in NJ/NY area with something like that on your vehicle) and once football season gets here my flag flies in front of the house."

"After 40 years just one Superbowl victory will be enough for my lifetime."

"My name is Fatius Jeebs, I am 31 years and I have a Saints problem."

"We actually had a Saints book in our library (yeah a little tiny library of a middle school out in the sticks had a saints book). I'd peg the book as a "Nfl yearbook" type of things as each team had one representing them in some sort of set. I read most of them, and like many before me said "wow those uniforms are only the coolest i've ever seen in my entire life."

" So when the wife wouldn't allow the dish, I actually had (have) Eagles season tickets and would go there 4+ times a year. Sadly I'd be watching the ticker for the Saints scores in between plays and during time-outs."

"Not if but when we win the superbowl, and you see me coming do not run and hide just sit down and take it like a man, because all the crap we as fans have taken over the years i am going to give it back to you and all at one time."

"... but the thing that stuck with me is that no one left the building until the end of the game, and everyone was partying and drinking, and being loud, and it was all good... well, maybe I was too drunk and all of 'em different colored seats fooled me into thinking the dome was full, but I had a grand time... "

"Although, I have to admit that I became disinfatuated with the team over them bringing Herbert back after his infamous holdout. That was just donkey wrong to bring him back."

"...i thought anything that you could watch on TV that could make a grown man yell and scream and cry and cheer had to be worth watching and i havent stopped since..."

"i am a saints fan from NEW JERSEY. that is the greatest state to live in. anyone that doesn't know that or understand you get a big go f... yourself from me. yous guys can blow."

To be continued......

Hey fans, it`s great to read about the different personalities here, knowing that we all have a common dream of actually witnessing the day of "When the Saints come Marching in".

I`m 41, I live on the MS Gulf Coast in Moss Point, and like many of you, I`ve been a Saints fan since the early days. I remember first watching the Saints on a black-n-white TV. On Christmas morning 1972 Santa made good on my request for a complete Saints uniform; helmet, jersey #8 ,pants, and shoulder pads. I remember watching the Saints with my Dad and brother, and how those 3 hours on Sunday was a great bonding time for us.

I lived in Nashville,TN from 1996-2002. I like many of you, I really used this site for information that you can`t get when you live outside the area. I don`t post alot on here, but I usually read everything pertaining to Saints football.

Is this the year? could this new line-up of coaches and key players be the combination we`ve waited for? ...... well, as a well seasoned Saints fan I don`t make blissful predictions but I do think we`ll have a solid team that will win some games and we can be proud of... regardless, I`ll be here.

The Great Cat Guru is 47, happily married, one daughter, cat & rabbit. Seen just about every Saints game. The combination has led to me being a twisted dude... thus the cat pictures.

I am originally from Houma LA now living in Willmar, MN. I am 44 feeling like I'm going on 104, some days. I have been a Saints fan since 1968 when I was first introduced to them through a friend and have followed them ever since.

I am very happily married & have one daughter living in Louisiana that's 14 and think she's going on 21 - go figure. Her Mother, my first wife, does not share her(my daughter's) passion for her wanting to live with her Dad - another story for another day. :x

I work overnights as a Security Officer here in MN but, am anxiously hoping to return to Louisiana and home someday soon. Needless to say, we get very few Saints games up here & my wife is a hopeless Vikings fan. My handle is a reference to my place of residence - not a declaration of loyalty to the Vikings, by the way. I am an eternal Saints fan - period. 8)
